The 7 best outdoor adventures in Sydney and New South Wales
Whether you're lacing up your hiking boots, throwing on a wetsuit to catch some waves, or hitting the wide-open roads of New South Wales (NSW) by campervan, this Australian state is home to some of the country's most exciting outdoor adventures – all easily accessible thanks to Qantas' extensive domestic network.
Flying into Sydney with Qantas is the ideal way to experience a slice of Australia before you've even landed. And with onboard wellbeing perks, plus the option to book more discounted domestic legs using Qantas Explorer, it really is the savvy traveller's best way to explore Australia.
Here are seven next-level outdoor adventures in NSW, and the best way to get there.
Nature in the heart of the Sydney
Sydney might be a modern metropolis, but it's also home to an extraordinary natural playground, the star attraction of which is Sydney Harbour National Park. This protected area weaves through the city's coastline, offering walking trails, secluded beaches, and panoramic views that blend wild bushland with iconic urban landmarks. Away from the National Park, you can paddle a kayak at dawn beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge, go on a cycle tour and sunset cruise around Manly and North Heads coastal cliffs, or follow the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk for sweeping ocean views and refreshing swim spots.
Hike through the Blue Mountains
Just a 90-minute trip from Sydney by road, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains is an endless landscape of towering eucalyptus forests and striking sandstone cliffs as far as the eye can see. There are few places quite as grand as this so close to a city. Don your hiking boots and traverse spectacular scenery to Wentworth Falls or take on the Grand Canyon Track – a 6km loop of dramatic cliffs, fern-fringed valleys and thundering waterfalls with lookouts to match. If you're an early riser, watch the sunrise at Echo Point, where the Three Sisters rock formation is lit up by the glow of first light.
Spot whales and dolphins in Port Macquarie
Wildlife lovers need to head north to Port Macquarie for some of the best marine encounters on the east coast. Humpback whales are almost guaranteed from May to November, and dolphins can be spotted all year round. For front-row views, jump on a whale-watching cruise, or pitch up with a picnic on a headland and watch the breaching giants from afar.
Cycle the lush hinterland of Coffs Harbour
Swap the sandy beaches for subtropical rainforest in Coffs Harbour's hinterland in Dorrigo National Park, where winding roads serpentine through flourishing banana plantations, dense palm-filled forest and endless rolling hills. The region's cycling trails range from casual loops to more challenging rides with jaw-to-the-floor sea views.
Ride the waves in Byron Bay
Aussies love their surfing, and Byron Bay is the epitome of surf culture Down Under, with beaches to suit all skill levels; from the gentle swell at The Pass to barrel-laden breaks at Tallows. If you've got any stamina left, soak up the view from Cape Byron Lighthouse post-surf – the easternmost point of mainland Australia.
Explore the remote Lord Howe Island
With over 8,000 islands to its name, Australia offers the ultimate in island adventures. Lord Howe is one of them, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed pristine island, where only 400 visitors are allowed at any one time. You'll find rare birds, kaleidoscopic coral reefs, and Mount Gower, offering one of the best day hikes in the country, with epic coastline views and dizzying drops.
Paddle the coastline of Merimbula
For those who need more than a beach stroll to get the heart pumping, grab a kayak and explore the Sapphire Coast from the water in Merimbula. Glide over crystal-clear waters, past secluded coves, pristine beaches, and the untouched beauty of surrounding national parks. Keep an eye out for dolphins and other marine life as you paddle. Once back on shore, refuel with the region's famous fresh oysters and enjoy a refreshing dip at Bar Beach.

Justin Hemmes appears in high spirits as he returns to his Sydney mansion while his pregnant partner Madeline Holtznagel hits her due date
Justin Hemmes was spotted looking very proud on Thursday as he arrived home, sparking rumours Madeline Holtznagel has welcomed their first child together. The billionaire pub baron, 52, touched down at his $100 million Vaucluse mansion via sea plane, with his heavily pregnant, long-term girlfriend, 28, nowhere in sight. With her due date imminent, Madeline hasn't been seen since the end of May, and has even manged to stay off social media - further adding to the baby speculation. Justin appeared to be in high spirits as he returned to his Sydney home this week, wearing a crisp white T-shirt and khaki slacks. He was forced to pull his trouser legs up as he waded through the water to get to his lavish house, which sits on the harbour. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. With his reading glasses and Bluetooth headphones in, the House of Merivale heir slicked his tresses back into a bun as he carried a large black bag. Meanwhile, his entourage were all smiles as they waited for the soon-to-be father-of-three to arrive. It comes after Madeline and Justin were spotted returning to the mansion at the end of May, with the model looking just days away from giving birth. Not wanting his heavily pregnant girlfriend to endanger herself and her precious cargo, Justin affectionately piggybacked his ladylove off his sea plane. The couple beamed broadly as Justin dutifully escorted Madeline to the shore, with Madeline wrapping her arms tightly around her beau's shoulders. The new mum recently admitted to Stellar she is thrilled to welcome a son because she wanted a 'new journey' with Justin, who already shares two daughters with ex-partner Kate Fowler. 'I always thought I was going to have a boy. I knew I was going to be a boy mum,' she said. 'Justin has two beautiful little girls, so having a boy, it's like a whole new journey together. [The baby] is going to be his little best mate.' He was forced to pull his trouser legs up as he waded through the water to get to his lavish house, which sits on the harbour She said up until now she kept details of her pregnancy private, but was ready to share her journey. 'I keep a lot of my life private and I don't share a lot online anyway, so [being pregnant] wasn't really something that I was going to share online,' she said. 'I haven't posted about it and it's been nice to have some quiet time off Instagram. 'But obviously because I am in the public eye and we do get photographed quite a lot, I think now I'm at this point in my pregnancy where it's nice for me to be able to share some nice photos'. Madeline also revealed she has sought advice from her older sisters Anna and fellow model Simone, who both have children. In November, an insider confirmed the exciting news of Madeline's pregnancy to Daily Mail Australia and revealed a friend of Justin's recently moved out of his Vaucluse mansion to make room for their growing family. Justin, who has a net worth of $1.39 billion, already has daughters Alexa and Saachi with his model ex-girlfriend Kate, from whom he separated in 2018. The business mogul then began dating Madeline the following year, when the model was 22 and he was 47.

'It's where you kick off your shoes, curl up with a glass of wine, and realise that you never want this time to end.' Aussie woman slams huge problem after moving back to the country
A woman has asked Australians to share what they like about their country during a fiery rant about how much life has changed Down Under. Sandra Abu Rabei, who has moved back to Australia after living in Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia and Qatar said the country was going backwards. 'Once you move back it's not that same as what you see from overseas or how other people explain the way that they live here,' she said in a TikTok. 'A lot of people come and say "no it's great, the lifestyle's great". But it's honestly cooked. We are slaves to the system. 'We go to work, we go home and then what's next? 'We pay so much tax, we pay so much for groceries, everyone's so exhausted that all they do is go home and sit on the sofa. 'I just find there's no real community feel here but that's not my biggest issue. It's just the fact that we are slaves to the system.' Ms Abu Rabei asked those wearing 'rose-coloured glasses' to share why they thought Australia was still the lucky country. 'I think that's long gone,' she continued. 'It's just not an affordable place anymore. It's not a fun place. We are living in an actual s*** hole and there are so many better places than here.' Ms Abu Rabei, who has three children, told Daily Mail Australia that any of the previous countries she had lived in would be 'great options' to raise her kids. 'I believe raising children in a country that has a better work/life balance with less tax to help them succeed in the future,' the small business owner said. 'People aren't seeing the benefits of where their tax money goes. Speak to any Boomer and they will tell you how bad it is now compared to before. 'I think Malaysia has a great lifestyle and Jordan has a great sense of community.' Ms Abu Rabei said she would 'most likely' move overseas in the future. Dozens of Aussies agreed that life Down Under was not what it used to be. 'I grew up in Australia for 38 years and I left for another life abroad for 23 years. I have just returned and I feel the same as you. Australia has become very sad case,' one man commented. 'We are total slaves to the system, so blinded. It's incredibly expensive with high taxes on everything,' another said. 'The element of fun is minimal and (there's) a rule for everything.' 'I'm from London and lived in Australia for eight years. I want to leave because it doesn't offer my kids the best opportunities anymore now so I feel they'd be better off growing up in the UK and having closer access to Europe and other countries which are thriving,' a third person agreed. But many disagreed, with some arguing it could be a lot worse. 'Spend some time overseas in a third world country and you'd be grateful for everything that we take for granted in Australia,' one person wrote. 'Give me Australia any day where all I see is people whining about literally anything and everything which in reality is so small in the big scheme of life.'
