All Black Fainga'anuku eyeing Top 14 semis before New Zealand return

France 24a day ago

Fainga'anuku will end his two-year stay at Toulon at the end of the season before going back to the Crusaders.
The 25-year-old arrived at Stade Mayol after the 2023 Rugby World Cup and has scored 15 tries in 38 appearances for the southern outfit.
"The real reason for my departure is that with my partner Terena we have a son and we think it's important that Zaya can spend time with family and friends back at home," Fainga'anuku told newspaper L'Equipe this week.
"We love Toulon but we owe that to our son," he added.
Fainga'anuku's return to New Zealand will offer him the chance to add to his seven Test appearances with All Blacks coach Scott Robertson barred from selecting players based abroad.
The Tonga-born midfielder has kept in touch with Robertson during his spell in the Top 14 as he helped Toulon to a third-placed finish in the table.
"He likes to know how things are going for me here," Fainga'anuku said of Roberston.
"We talk in a friendly way.
"I like a lot that he's left the door open for me with the All Blacks," he added.
'Contrasting feelings'
This weekend, Fainga'anuku will have his focus on claiming a semi-final spot against Bordeaux-Begles with a win over Castres, who were in sixth place at the end of the regular season.
The Top 14 final takes place on June 28 in Paris.
"I have contrasting feelings," Fainga'anuku said.
"I'm excited to go home but at the same time, I will miss life here," he added.
In the other play-off, Bayonne return to the knock-out stages of the French top division for the first time since 1992 as they host Clermont, champions in 2010 and 2017.
The Basque outfit avoided the relegation play-off last season by just eight points but are the only unbeaten outfit at home in the competition this term.
The winner of the tie at a sold-out Stade Jean-Dauger will face record 23-time champions Toulouse next Friday in Lyon in the other semi.
Bayonne's hopes of reaching the last four have been dealt a blow with former England centre Manu Tuilagi sidelined with a rib issue to face Les Jaunards.
"It's going to be fricking incredible," Bayonne's English lock Alex Moon told this week's Rosbifs Rugby Podcast about the game.
"They're a big team, it's about getting the body fresh because it's going to be physical" the 28-year-old added.
Elsewhere this weekend, second-tier Grenoble face the Top 14's Perpignan in the promotion play-off.
It's the Pro D2 outfit's third straight involvement in the fixture after a loss to Montpellier last season and defeat to the Catalans two years ago.

Liverpool bank on 'world-class' Wirtz after record deal

Fresh from winning a 20th English top-flight title, Arne Slot's Reds have broken the bank to land a rising star already labelled as one of the world's best by former Reds midfielder and Wirtz's former coach Xabi Alonso. British media reported on Friday that the Premier League champions had agreed a club-record deal worth up to £116 million ($157 million) to secure the services of the attacking midfielder. Liverpool can now agree personal terms with a player coveted by a number of top European clubs. Wirtz's abundant potential as a teenager sparked a row between his hometown club Cologne and Leverkusen five years ago when Leverkusen, who are backed by pharmaceutical giants Bayer, swooped to sign him at 17. Cologne argued that a gentleman's agreement not to poach youth team players had been violated, but Leverkusen said Wirtz was a first-team signing and within months he had made his Bundesliga debut. His rise was interrupted by a cruciate knee ligament injury in March 2022 that forced him to miss the next 10 months. By the time he returned, Alonso had been installed as Leverkusen boss and together they would spearhead the club's greatest days. Leverkusen ended Bayern Munich's grip on the Bundesliga in stunning fashion, romping to the title and the German Cup without losing a single match in the 2023/24 season. Wirtz netted his first career hat-trick on the day the title was sealed against Werder Bremen, on his way to being crowned Bundesliga player of the year. "Flo is one of the top players in the world, he's world class," said Alonso, who compared his protege to Lionel Messi in terms of his understanding of the game. "Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball'," said Alonso, a hero of Liverpool's 2005 Champions League triumph. "It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good." 'The full package' Both star player and coach committed to staying with the Leverkusen project for another 12 months, but defeat in the Europa League final to Atalanta to round off the 2023/24 campaign was a sign of things to come. Bayern restored their grip on the German game last season but could not convince Wirtz to follow the lead of many others in joining from their Bundesliga rivals. Instead, he made it clear his preference was a move to the Premier League champions and the chance to add his name to Liverpool's cast of legends. "A huge talent, huge future in front of him, so Liverpool is the place for him," said the club's former captain Steven Gerrard. Despite 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen, Wirtz will begin life at Anfield in the shadow of Mohamed Salah. But the Reds are banking on Wirtz's creativity to help maintain the 32-year-old's prolific goalscoring numbers and ease the burden of carrying the Liverpool attack. The club's previous record signing, £85 million recruit Darwin Nunez, has failed to deliver and could be sold to help recoup some of their major outlay on new faces. Liverpool will hope Wirtz can handle the pressure of his price tag and the physicality of the Premier League to ensure there is no second season slump under Slot. Former Germany head coach Hansi Flick is in no doubt about what the midfielder has to offer. "He's simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, is very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick," he said. "He's the full package." © 2025 AFP

Louis Vuitton to dress Real Madrid for off-field action

has announced a partnership to dress Real Madrid in off-field action, uniting luxury's largest label with the most successful football club in Europe. Vuitton will provide the formal wear and formal travel wear collections for Real's men's and women's soccer teams, as well as the men's basketball team. For the first time, the Maison is placing its tailoring at the service of athletes whose sporting exploits resonate far beyond the stadiums, celebrating the quest for excellence and self-improvement that unite the brand and top-level sport, Vuitton said in a statement. Founded in 1902, Real is the most decorated professional football team in the world, and holder of a record 15 Champions League titles, the continent's most prestigious soccer competition. However, Real comes off an unsuccessful season, where it failed to win any of the four competitions it entered. The Madrid club also saw its record-holding coach Carlo Ancelotti depart last month to become coach of Brazil — the most successful national team in history. As a partner of mega sporting events, from the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games to the Formula 1® World Championship, Vuitton has been highly active in the world of elite sports by manufacturing original trophy trunks that accompany the winners of prestigious international competitions. Vuitton succeeds the house Versace, which had started dressing Real off-field in 2013, despite the fact Donatella Versace is a committed fan of Inter Milan. However, by dressing all of Real's representatives during their travels and major events, this new collaboration underlines the French brand's motto: 'La Victoire Voyage en Louis Vuitton' (Victory travels in Louis Vuitton). "Real Madrid is constantly pushing the boundaries of excellence and innovation. This energy echoes that of Louis Vuitton. This wardrobe has been designed to share that spirit, offering a style that evokes determination, strength and elegance. Real Madrid and Louis Vuitton share common values that motivate our respective actions, making this partnership even stronger," said Pharrell Williams, men's creative director. The formal wardrobe includes ready-to-wear, footwear and accessories that will be worn at official club events. The wardrobe highlights the house's tailoring art, with refined details such as the VVN leather label, an emblematic leather borrowed from Louis Vuitton trunks to illustrate the expertise of the workshops, embossed with the Louis Vuitton signature and sewn onto the lapel of jackets and the back pocket of pants. The ready-to-wear collection features a series of characterful accessories, including a leather belt with LV palladium buckle, an embroidered cotton navy cap and the LV Soft shoe. "We are proud to accompany a club whose history is marked by countless victories at national and international levels and which continues to inspire entire generations. Louis Vuitton and Real Madrid share founding values that have taken them to the very top of their sport, propelled by a relentless quest for excellence, a spirit of innovation and self-improvement,' stressed Pietro Beccari, chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton. A collection of made-to-measure travel items completes the wardrobe. It includes the Horizon 55 cabin suitcase, the iconic Keepall and the Christopher backpack, as well as travel accessories such as a toiletry bag and a passport cover. Each piece is dressed in the iconic Monogram canvas and embellished with white and gold stripes in the club's colors. The initials 'RM' represent an original design created as part of the Mon Monogram personalization service offered to the Maison's customers. Emilio Butragueño, the former striker for Real Madrid, known as El Buitre (The Vulture) for his ability to poach goals, who is now director of institutional relations, commented: "At Real Madrid, we are convinced that excellence is the key to staying at the top. Louis Vuitton, an emblematic French brand, is also driven by this quest for excellence. We have both managed to remain timeless references, and we share not only the responsibility of building a legacy, but also that of inspiring beyond our respective spheres." The exclusive Louis Vuitton x Real Madrid formal wear and formal travel wear collections are not available for sale. However, certain emblematic Louis Vuitton models and the Mon Monogram personalization service can be found in stores and on the website.
