Cops step up vigil after Naxals say May 21 gunfight aided by ex-cadres

Police and intelligence agencies have been keeping a close watch on activities of Maoist cadres and their overground supporters following the last week's killing of their top leader Basavaraju in an encounter in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, officials said on Monday.
In a statement attributed to Maoists and shared nearly a week after the encounter, the Naxals have admitted that a total of 28 cadres, including Basavaraju, were killed in the gun-battle. In one of the biggest strikes on Naxalites, security forces gunned down Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju, general secretary of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), and 26 other cadres during a fierce encounter in forests of Abhujmad along Bijapur-Narayanpur inter-district border on May 21. Two jawans of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) of state police were also killed during the gunfight. In the statement dated May 25, shared on social media on Monday, Maoists claimed some cadres active in the unit of Basavaraju recently surrendered before police and helped security forces in the operation, resulting in the death of the septuagenarian Naxal leader. The three-page statement was issued in the name of Vikalp, a spokesperson of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC), which had been instrumental in executing several deadly attacks on security forces in south Bastar. The Maoists, in the statement said, there were 35 cadres, including Basavaraju, who were engaged in the encounter with security personnel on May 21 and of them, 28 were killed while seven others managed to escape. Police had recovered the bodies of 27 Naxalites. The body of a cadre, Nilesh, was found by Maoists, the statement said.
"The police intelligence was already aware of the presence of the party's (CPI-Maoist) general secretary BR Dada in Abhujmad. In the last 6 months, some people from different units active in the Maad area surrendered before police and became traitors. Police kept receiving our confidential information from these surrendered cadres. Two major operations were conducted (by security forces) in January and March targeting Basavaraju, but they were not successful," it said. After these operations, in the last one-and-a-half months, six people from the unit belonging to Basavaraju surrendered before police. A company party committee member (CYPCM), who was charged with key responsibility in Basavaraju's security, was also among them, said the statement. A member of the unified command of Maoists, which guides Naxal activities in Abhujmad, also sided with police which made their task easier. All these surrendered cadres took part in the (anti-Naxal) operation. Because of them, we had to suffer such a big loss, it said. Maoists admitted they failed to protect their leader. A senior police official said the CPI (Maoist), in the statement, has admitted to the loss of 28 cadres, including Basavaraju, "Through the statement, the illegal and banned Maoist outfit was also trying to instigate their supporters to organise rallies and meetings throughout the country to glorify the death of their cruel and dreadful leadership, which was responsible for the death of thousands and thousands of innocent citizens, tribals, women, children and security personnel. "Police and intelligence agencies have been keeping a strict vigil on activities of underground Maoist cadres as well as their overground workers and supporters," Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P noted.
Three AK-47 rifles, four Self Loading Rifle (SLR), six Insas rifles, one carbine, six .303 rifles, one Barrel Grenade Launcher (BGL), two rocket launchers, two 12 bore guns, one country made pistol, two muzzle loading guns and a huge cache of explosives were recovered from the encounter site in forests of Kudmel-Kalhaja-Jatlur villages, he said. "The recovered arms included an AK-47 weapon looted by Basavaraju and his associates from security forces in April 2010 Tadmetla ambush in then Dantewada district (where 76 security personnel were killed) and those looted by Naxals after 2010 Gawadi (Narayanpur district) and 2017 Burkapal (Sukma district) attacks," the IPS officer said. Efforts were on to establish the origin of other weapons, he added. Basavaraju was one of the most wanted criminals in the country and so far records of more than 258 criminal cases, in which he had direct or indirect involvement, are being screened by the investigation team, Sundarraj said. Further lawful action and investigation procedure is being carried out by Narayanapur Police in the case, the IG said.

Kept my word, razed terror hideouts to the ground: Modi in Bihar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that he had delivered on his promise made during his last visit to Bihar to pursue and punish terrorists and their backers and asserted that the fight against terror was 'neither over, nor has it come to a halt'. 'After the dreadful terrorist attack in Pahalgam, I had promised the country from the land of Bihar that the hideouts of the perpetrators of terrorism would be razed to the ground, that they would get a punishment beyond their imagination. Today, when I have come to Bihar, I have come here after fulfilling my promise,' PM Modi said at a public event in Bikramganj in Rohtas district, referring to India's successful military action against terror organisations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7 under Operation Sindoor, in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. On his last visit to Bihar on April 24, PM Modi vowed to punish those responsible for the deadly terror strike in Kashmir that had killed 26 people. 'Friends, today from the soil of Bihar, I say it to the whole world: India will identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the earth,' PM Modi said in Madhubani district on April 24. At Friday's event 300km away, the prime minister said those who dared to wipe off 'sindoor' from the foreheads of our sisters have had their hideouts and safe havens reduced to rubble by the brave armed forces in one stroke. In his speech, PM Modi also paid tributes to Mohammed Imtiyaz, a Border Security Force jawan from Bihar who had laid down his life for the country on May 10. 'At present, the enemy has seen just one arrow from our quiver. Our fight against terrorism is neither over, nor has it come to a halt. If terror raises its hood again, it will be dragged out of its hole and trampled,' he said. PM Modi also referred to the progress made in dealing with Maoist violence, saying India was fighting against its enemies, both across the border as well as within the country. He said there were 125 Maoist-affected districts before 2014 when he took over as prime minister. 'Now the number has been reduced to just 18 and the day is not far when they will be completely wiped out to ensure peace, safety, development, education and employment everywhere,' he said. He also took a dig at the Congress and the RJD for 'trying to cheat people with social justice while doing everything to loot and exploit the deprived sections of Dalits and the backward classes when they were in power'. 'Before the NDA government in Bihar, the state was devoid of basic infrastructure, roads and electricity. But that era is over now. Bihar has modern airports and high-speed trains, four- and six-lane roads crisscrossing the state, electricity, and a huge infrastructure development. All these works could have been done earlier also, but those in power looted and exploited the poor by taking away their land for jobs (in an oblique reference to the land for job case involving RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav). This was their style of social justice to exploit the deprived lot to ensure a lavish lifestyle for themselves. Now they are desperate for power and again trying to lure the deprived lot with social justice talk after doing the biggest injustice with them when they were in power. People need to be wary of them,' he added.

CPI(M) names ex-MLA M Swaraj as candidate for Nilambur bypoll on June 19

Kochi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday named, M Swaraj, former MLA and state secretariat member as its candidate for the upcoming by-election to the Nilambur assembly constituency in Kerala scheduled for June 19. The decision was announced by CPI(M)'s state secretary MV Govindan, following the party's state secretariat meeting in Thiruvananthapuram. Swaraj, who represented the Thripunithura assembly constituency in Ernakulam district between 2016 and 2021 as a member of the legislative assembly (MLA), will take on Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath in the bypoll. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is yet to announce its candidate. The bye-election was necessitated after independent MLA from Nilambur PV Anvar resigned as legislator on January 13, following which the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) appointed him as the party's state convenor in Kerala. Anvar, who had won as a Left Democratic Front (LDF)-backed Independent in 2016 and 2021 assembly elections from Nilambur in Malappuram district, broke ranks with the CPI(M)-led LDF last year over a range of issues. Anvar and the AITC have demanded inclusion in the Congress-led UDF fold. A decision on the matter is pending. After he was nominated by the party, Swaraj told reporters that 'the votes would be cast in favour of the Left as vindication of its developmental achievements in the last nine years.' 'A wide section of people across party lines agree today that the LDF best governs Kerala. The common people in the state are the beneficiaries of the developmental and welfare initiatives that the government has taken. They have love and trust for the government. This will reflect in Nilambur too. The stand that the CPI(M) and LDF have taken against communal forces has always been welcomed by secular voters. We are very confident about our chances,' Swaraj said.
