Motherwell boss: Whether Rangers, Celtic or St Johnstone are our opponents, we will always go for the win
Jens Berthel Askou says Motherwell will do everything they can to dump St Johnstone out of the Premier Sports Cup – but expects a tough test.
The Lanarkshire side head to McDiarmid Park in Perth in the last 16 of the competition, looking to book a place in the quarter-finals.
Motherwell are still searching for their first league win, while Simo Valakari's men are sitting top of the Scottish Championship with two straight wins.
But Askou says Motherwell will go for the win, regardless of their opponent. He said: 'It's always important to do well in a competition. It's important to put a performance out where we show ourselves and everyone that we go for the win, and it doesn't matter if we play Rangers, Celtic, or St Johnstone in the cup, or Clyde, or whoever it is.
'We will go to win the game. We will put as strong a team as we can on the pitch, with a good group on the bench, ready to come in and finish off the game, and we will have a go.
'We know it's a team with confidence, who have had a good start. It's a team that is brave and has a similar approach to the game as we do, which will make it possibly an open game, and we have to be alert.'
Motherwell battled out a 0-0 draw against St Mirren in Paisley on Saturday, and took their second point, having drawn 1-1 at home to Rangers last weekend, but Askou says a win will come in time.
He said: 'I don't know if I have frustration. We played Rangers, who we know is a very tough, very big team, and we played a team that were in the top six in the last two years, and are very difficult to beat.
'We kept a clean sheet, we're happy with that, so I won't say I'm frustrated – that's a big word to use – but we are doing our best to get three points.
'We know we have things to improve, but in general I am very happy with our performance again. I think it was directly in line with what we've been doing for the last couple of weeks. I trust the players to get that last bit of effectiveness that we lacked.
Johnny Koutroumbis went off injured in Paisley on Saturday, and Askou hopes the defender will recover in time for the trip to Perth.
He said: 'I hope it's not too bad. He was not on a stretcher, he could walk and seems to be okay but we will have to assess that this week.'

McInnes: ‘nothing wrong in setting lofty ambitions'
Derek McInnes eyed Saturday's clash at St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup and said: 'If we can get through this one we're 90 minutes from a semi-final.' The Buddies will provide tough opposition and the head coach said that they have shown they are a good side. The newcomer said he wasn't 'jumping through hoops' when St Mirren away came out of the draw but he added that you have to beat good teams to progress. He believes Hearts can go all the way and the former Aberdeen and Kilmarnock manager declared: 'There is nothing wrong with setting lofty ambitions. We've got to imagine that day at Hampden.' Expectation is high in the Gorgie faithful following two straight wins in the William Hill Premiership taking them to the top of the 12-strong table, and four victories in the group stages of the cup, but the club, he said, had not done anything special yet. McInnes said: 'We go into the game (on Saturday) with high expectations of ourselves.' TALK-IN: Derek McInnes (right) talking to Sky Sports during training at Riccarton. Hearts kid told to rise to Rangers test at Ibrox and extend hot streak
The centre-half has not been disappointed by the 6ft 5in 20-year-old – McFarlane has kept clean sheets in the League Cup group stage wins over Bonnyrigg Rose and Dundee as well as the League 1 triumph against East Fife. Read more: The player who helped the Bayview outfit win promotion through the play-offs last term has still to suffer a draw or a defeat this term and Graham is hopeful that he can continue his outstanding form in the second round Premier Sports Cup meeting with Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday evening. 'We managed to bring in big Liam from Hearts and he's been excellent for us,' he said. 'We're really thankful to Derek McInnes for getting him out to us because he's really been different class. Hopefully he continues that on Saturday. 'It's a bit early to talk about whether he can play for Scotland. But he's certainly got a bright future. He's in the under-21 squad and you can see why. He's been exemplary since he's come to us. (Image: Rob Casey - SNS Group) 'He has a great approach to games. He is calm, he is composed and he has got all the physical attributes. He's 6ft 5in, but he's still agile. He can play as well. He can certainly play with the ball at his feet, he can kick it really far. 'Let's be honest, he is pretty young to go into a first team isn't he? But he did brilliantly last season and he has started this season well. It's just about him continuing that development as a goalkeeper. 'He was one that we've had our eye on for a good while. He's come in and he's been absolutely fantastic so far. Long may that continue. He'll have bumps in the road as a young player. It's about how he deals with them and responds to them. A young player's development is all about responding to adversity. Read more: 'But the coaching staff that we've got here will support him and ensure he'll bounce back from any adversity and come through the other side of it. I hope that he continues his development here.' Graham continued, 'I think Derek rates him highly because he wanted him at a part-time club this season so he could have him in with him in the building training with Hearts during the week. That is the beauty of a part-time loan for the full-time clubs as well. Hearts hold him in high regard. And rightly so. 'Schedule wise, he'll train with us on a Tuesday and a Thursday and play with us on a Saturday. Then he'll be in with Hearts the rest of the week. He has the best of both worlds really.'
