A lot of time has passed since. From being a promising youngster, Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma. But his skills and potential have been talked about as long as memory can recall. Gill's association with former India coach Rahul Dravid began during his Under-19 days, where they worked closely together. Before becoming head coach of the senior men's team, Dravid, as coach of the India A team, closely mentored Gill. In the same year that India won the U-19 World Cup, Dravid made a pivotal decision to fast-track Gill's career, prioritising his development while briefly delaying the rise of another promising Indian talent.

"Anmolpreet Singh had a great season, and one of the five selectors was bent on putting him on that flight. Anmol had runs in domestic cricket and his choice would have been justified. Now Rahul (Dravid), who was the NCA head and India A coach, had a request for the selectors," a former national selector told PTI.
"Rahul, everyone knows, is polite to a fault. He had just one request for the panel. He said, 'please select this boy Shubman and accommodate Anmol for another A tour'. We couldn't turn down his request and Shubman within months of U-19 World Cup triumph was in India A team."
Dravid has always been a visionary. Anmolpreet is a couple of years older than Gill, and while he amassed runs consistently, Shubman Gill possessed something extraordinary – impeccable technique paired with an unflappable temperament. At the elite level, these qualities weigh as heavily as a towering run tally. Dravid, with his keen eye for talent, recognised Gill's rare potential early on and was determined not to let him linger in domestic cricket.
Gill's standout performances for India A in England during a one-day tri-series backed Dravid's claim, but it was his monumental double hundred against West Indies A in a 'Test' match the following year that cemented his trajectory. From that moment, there was no turning back for the young prodigy.

The only way Gukesh gets to win Norway Chess is if Carlsen fails to win his final game – either by losing or being held to a draw. Should Carlsen lose to Arjun in the final round, a draw will suffice for Gukesh even if he goes on to lose the Armageddon playoff against Caruana. American GM Nakamura, however, isn't far behind on 13 points, and should he defeat Wei in Round 10, Gukesh will have no option but to win his last game. The only other player with a distant chance of finishing at the top is Caruana, who is fourth in the standings with 12.5 points. "Initially, we planned to open the gates around 4 pm. But sensing the crowd build-up, the gates were opened at 2:30 pm, and all were seated in the stadium by 4 pm. While 35,000 persons were in the stadium, the rest were to be accommodated on the roads around. Announcements began to be made about the stadium being out of bounds as it was full," the official said. People arriving in the area were asked to move in an orderly manner to Marine Drive, the official said. "Just two days before this event, a stampede in Hathras in Uttar Pradesh had killed 121. So the attention to detail was absolute. Moreover, we had experience of hosting the Indian Air Force's air show at Marine Drive in January (2024), which was attended by several thousand persons," he said. A highlight of the arrangements, the official recollected, was the binding instruction not to resort to lathi-charge for untoward incidents. It was decided that barricades would play a vital role in crowd management and flow, along with heavy deployment of police at all points, he said, adding that constant announcements from loudspeakers kept everyone in the loop about the situation and what was expected of them. He praised the crowd for following the instructions of the police properly. "The Indian team came in cars till NCPA (at the southern tip of Marine Drive) and then got on to the bus, which moved through the crowd of revellers. The bus was given two layers of security," the official said. Then police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar and special police commissioner Deven Bharti, who incidentally heads the metropolis' force now, personally monitored the crowd. Minor incidents of suffocation and stampede-like situations reported near Churchgate station were defused with the timely intervention of police, with people arriving at the station by trains being asked to go back, the official said. The event was held successfully because police had given attention to even minute issues, like asking people not to bend down to pick up slippers that get left behind, as such acts can trigger a chain of events ending in stampedes, he said. Three trucks full of footwear were collected by civic workers following the event, the official pointed out.
