Record setting Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance priced

Second torquiest AMG product on-sale in South Africa today finally arrives after its competition success in Knysna in May.

Having made its public debut at the Simola Hillclimb in Knysna last month, where it won the production car category overall piloted by AMG Driving Experience boss Clint Weston, Mercedes-Benz has divulged pricing of the AMG GT63 S E Performance.
Performance hybrid
The replacement for the previous generation AMG GT R, the two-door GT63 becomes Affalterbach's second torquiest road car on-sale today behind the S65 E Performance, by combining the stalwart 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor and battery pack.
Devised as a short range hybrid with emphasis on performance, hence its name, the V8 develops 450kW/850Nm on its own and is mated to the nine-speed MCT transmission.

Combined with a rear mounted electric motor developing 150kW/320Nm, driven by a 6.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the AMG GT63 S E Performance produces 600kW/1 420Nm, which AMG says will get it from 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 320 km/h.
As with the four-door AMG GT63 and the S65 E Performance, drive is routed to all four wheels via the 4Matric+ all-wheel-drive system. Being a plug-in hybrid, but with performance as the main focus, as mentioned, the claim all-electric is a mere 13 km.
AMG modes
Able to feed as much as 100 kW back into the battery pack using the regenerative braking system, the local market AMG GT63 S E Performance comes with the same hybrid-optimised AMG Dynamic Select system as the variant sold in Europe.
In total, this consist of eight settings: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, Electric and Battery Hold, which uses the V8 as the main propulsion method without affecting the battery's range.
Inside and out
Carried over from the Old Continent model as well is the rear-axle steering system, the adaptive AMG Ride Control dampers, model specific shock absorbers and springs, the standard AMG carbon ceramic brakes, and the AMG light alloy wheels measuring 20-inches at the front and 21-inches at the rear.
Inside, the AMG GT63 S E Performance's unique accommodation includes optional diamond quilting on the AMG Performance Nappa leather trimmed seats, and hybrid graphics and readouts within the 12.3-inch instrument cluster and the 11.9-inch MBUX infotainment system.
Price
Forming part of a three model range as Mercedes-Benz South Africa's website lists the GT 55 and standard GT 63 as the other variants, albeit without pricing, the GT63 S E Performance as a sticker of R4 369 287, which includes a five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.

The automotive industry was in big trouble before with a slump in new vehicle sales and this has now intensified with the introduction of the US tariffs. The US tariffs and a slump in new vehicle sales caused 12 companies to close and 4 000 people lose their jobs over the past two years. The erosion of the industrial value of the automotive indsutry is emphasised by recent suspensions at Mercedes-Benz and other Original Equipment Manufacturers. Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau shared this grim news with people who attended the annual National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM) show on Thursday. He pointed out that the automotive sector is the cornerstone of South Africa's manufacturing economy, contributing 5.2% to gross domestic product (GDP) and 22.6% of industrial output. 'This industry faces intersecting challenges that demand urgent collaboration but within these challenges lie transformative opportunities to redefine and leverage our global competitiveness.' However, Tau says, we confront a stark reality that domestic sales of locally produced vehicles plummeted to 515 850 units in 2024, far below the South Africa Automotive Masterplan 2035 target of 784 509. He said it is also important to remember that 64% of vehicles sold in South Africa are imports, eroding local production scales. 'Compounding this, local content remains stagnant at 39%, well short of the 60% target, while US tariffs now significantly affect our R28.7 billion automotive exports. These pressures triggered 12 company closures and over 4 000 job losses in two years.' According to Tau, localisation is not merely policy compliance, but existential. 'A 5% increase in local content would unlock R30 billion in new procurement, dwarfing the R4.4 billion US export market. To achieve this, we must act collectively to address some of the bottlenecks to growth. 'Therefore, we are reviewing the Automotive Production Development Programme (APDP) as a comprehensive way of responding to the challenges the sector face, but also to ensure that we see regular growth in the sector to meet the goals of the Automotive Masterplan. 'Some of these reforms include the incentive structure and shifting duty credits to reward manufacturing instead of assembly credits. 'Our critical minerals and metals strategy will prioritise beneficiating platinum group metals (PGMs), copper and manganese for high-value new energy vehicles components such as fuel cells and batteries. Isondo Precious Metals' fuel cell plant in the OR Tambo SEZ proves this viability.' Turning to innovation, Tau said global competitiveness hinges on embracing disruption. 'We have been on a path of developing a new industrial policy which focuses on decarbonisation, digitisation and diversification and we follow the example of players in the auto sector. 'In the area of digitisation, Eastern Cape pioneers like S4 and Jendamark demonstrate how AI and automation can future-proof operations.' In decarbonisation, Tau said Borbet SA's 20-year solar energy commitment and Malben Engineering's green steel pilot project align with global carbon rules reshaping trade. As NAACAM notes, carbon has become 'part of the cost of doing business – and increasingly, part of the value too'. Turning to diversification, Tau said catalytic converter exports, historically our lead sub-sector, are declining due to EV shifts and Chinese competition. 'We must scale new products, such as e-axles and thermal systems as well as markets, particularly under the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).' Therefore, it goes without saying that inclusion drives growth. The South Africa Automotive Masterplan 2035's target of 130 new black-owned manufacturers is advancing, with 26 black-owned MSMEs exhibiting, supported by the Automotive Industry Transformation Fund and OEM partnerships such as Toyota-Isuzu's supplier development programme. 'As you would agree, the pace does need to be hastened. Therefore, we are hopeful that the industry will support the endeavour of the Transformation Fund that we are pursuing at the dtic with the view to enhance overall transformation through enterprise and supplier development (ESD) funds.' ALSO READ: US tariffs: SA sends new proposal but no changes to laws Tau emphasised that South Africa must accelerate skills development to ensure that we prepare our labour force for the dramatic changes that artificial intelligence will bring into the sector. 'It is therefore critical that we partner with institutions in the country to address this urgently. 'Entrenching supply chain equity through initiatives like linking equity investments to procurement from black-owned tier 2/3 suppliers will create symbiotic growth. As government, we are also working hard to eliminate compliance burdens and reduce red tape which inhibits investment in our country's automotive sector. 'Our policy response is accelerating and we plan on introducing an Omnibus (general laws amendment) Bill to fast-track high-impact investments and projects within 90 days. This is but one of the ambitious plans we have for the medium-term. We want to grow the sector and therefore our first option must not be to wield a stick but rather offer a carrot to these companies to attract more investment into the country, increasing the value-add of particularly our component manufacturers.' Tau pointed out that the Eastern Cape produces 46% of South Africa's vehicles and 54% of its exports, epitomising our potential. Therefore, he said, everyone has the responsibility to reignite the collective ambition that drives NAACAM's advocacy. 'With South Africa chairing the G20, our automotive sector can model African industrial resilience rooted in localisation, powered by innovation and fortified by equity.'

Although the imposition of US tariffs only affects Mercedes-Benz at present, this is expected to take a significant toll on that company, while elsewhere in the industry, a gradual deindustrialisation is eroding local output. While industry leaders such as Toyota SA CEO Andrew Kirby have previously sounded the warning bells about industrial decline, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, added to the chorus this week when he stated that the abovementioned pressures have resulted in 12 component company closures and over 4,000 job losses in the last two years. Speaking at an industry showcase held by the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (Naacam) on Wednesday, Tau stated that local vehicle production, at 515,850 units in 2024, was far below the Automotive Masterplan 2035 target of 784,509. Equally worrying is that local content for vehicle production remains stagnant at 39%, well below the 64% target. Imports remain a threat, as just 37% of the vehicles that South Africans purchase are locally produced, according to Lightstone, while 36% are sourced from India and 11% from China. He revealed that the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) was reviewing the current Automotive Production Development Programme (APDP) as a comprehensive way of responding to the sector's challenges. Among these reforms would be shifting the duty credit incentive structure to place a greater emphasis on rewarding full manufacture, rather than just assembly. The government is also planning to incentivise electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing. As announced earlier this year, carmakers will be able to claim a 150% tax deduction on investments related to EV production. The government is also considering adding locally mined minerals to the list of Items that qualify as local content under the APDP. In addition, a comprehensive skills gap analysis has been completed, resulting in EV-specific curricula and certification programmes now being developed in conjunction with numerous universities. The Minister said the government was also working hard to eliminate compliance burdens and reduce the red tape currently inhibiting investment into the auto sector. This includes a General Laws Amendment Bill that aims to fast-track high-impact investments and projects within 90 days. A call for punitive tariffs However, when it comes to protecting the local manufacturing industry from a flood of affordable imports, it appears the DTIC is not in favour of punitive measures such as tariffs. This is in spite of widespread calls for this, including from manufacturers such as BMW SA and industry organisations. Speaking at a separate event held on Tuesday, in response to Trump's tariff imposition, Tau said: 'With regards to Chinese and Indian auto, it is a discussion that we're currently having with the intention of taking a less punitive approach, but rather taking a more proactive approach of getting some of those products manufactured in the country.' 'So we're not holding the stick as a starting point. We start with the carrot and then balance it with the stick," Tau added.

South Africa, a market long dominated by the likes of Volkswagen, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz, saw sales of 515,850 locally produced cars last year, far below the South Africa Automotive Masterplan 2035 target of 784,509, minister Parks Tau told delegates at an auto parts conference. About 64% of vehicles sold in South Africa are imports. Additionally, localisation — the level of local assembly, labour and components — remains stagnant at 39%, well short of the 60% target, while US tariffs now significantly affect the country's R28.7bn automotive exports, he added. 'These pressures have triggered 12 company closures and more than 4,000 job losses in two years,' Tau said. South Africa's automotive industry employs 115,000 people directly, with more than 80,000 in component manufacturing alone. Experts say that with the US tariffs on cars and parts that were imposed from April, jobs are under threat as some companies are set to lose contracts in America. South Africa on Tuesday submitted a revised offer for a trade deal with Washington, in an effort to lower the 30% tariff US President Donald Trump imposed last week. To help respond to the challenges in the industry, an incentive scheme for local manufacturing now includes electric vehicles and associated components, Tau said. 'Localisation is not merely policy compliance, it is existential. A 5% increase in local content would unlock R30bn in new procurement, dwarfing the R4.4bn US export market,' Tau said. International manufacturers such as Stellantis and China's Chery are looking to localise production in South Africa, with Stellantis ready to break ground in the Eastern Cape.
