How climate change is making Europe's fish move to new waters

Climate change is reshaping fish habitats. Some fish are winners, others are losing out.
Fish already face plenty of pressure from overfishing and pollution. Climate change is adding more: warmer waters and shifting food supplies cause what's known as a predator-prey mismatch. This means prey and predator are not in the same place at the same time, which not only affects our diets but also fishing industries and ocean health more widely.
As the ocean heats up, fish try to stay in the conditions they're best suited to. Some species will move, but others can't relocate so easily – for example, if they need to live in a certain habitat at a particular life-stage, such as in kelp that offers shelter for breeding. So, depending on the species and location, climate change could create new fishing opportunities for some countries, and big losses for others.
Fisheries managers typically group fish into 'stocks'. These are populations of the same species in a defined region, often based on national borders. But those human-made boundaries don't matter to fish. As they shift in response to climate change, managing their populations will become more complex and will need to be flexible and responsive.
By 2050, waters around the UK are expected to warm by about 1°C if we follow a 'moderate' emissions path. If emissions continue to rise unchecked, the increase could reach 2-3°C by the end of the century. At the same time, the food that fish eat (such as tiny plankton) could drop by as much as 30%.
My team and I used advanced computer modelling to predict how 17 key commercial species such as mackerel, cod, plaice, tuna and sardines might respond to two future climate scenarios. Our results show a patchwork of winners and losers.
Take sardines and mackerel. These species live in the upper ocean and are sensitive to temperature. Both are expected to shift northward. This shift would be around 20 miles in the North Sea and up to 80 miles in the north-east Atlantic by 2100 under a moderate emissions scenario.
While sardines may thrive, with a 10% boost in Atlantic abundance, our model suggests mackerel could decline by 10% in the Atlantic and 20% in the North Sea. Consequently, the type and quantity of fish available will change.
Warm-water species like bluefin tuna may benefit within UK waters. Tuna is projected to shift only slightly (by approximately 4 miles) under the same scenario, but their abundance could rise by 10%, potentially bringing more of them into UK waters. That's good news for fishers already targeting this high-value catch, or those looking to change their main target species.
But bottom-dwelling species like cod and saithe (pollock) face a tougher future. These fish prefer colder, deeper waters and have fewer options to escape warming seas due to depth limitations.
In the North Sea, they're projected to shift southward by around 9 miles because that's where the remaining cool, deep water is. But this won't be enough to avoid a significant decline in their numbers: their populations are expected to drop by 10-15% under a moderate scenario by 2050.

Changing tides
And if climate change accelerates, the declines become far more severe. By the end of the century, North Sea cod and saithe could fall by 30-40%, according to our model. Mackerel abundance could drop by 25% in the Atlantic, while sardines might see only a modest 5% increase, despite moving 155 miles northward. Bluefin tuna could see a 40% rise in numbers, shifting 27 miles further north.
We've estimated how species will shift their locations – but computer models can't account for every interaction between marine species. For example, predator-prey relationships can be crucial in shaping an ecosystem. Bluefin tuna is a predatory species which hunts shoals of herring, mackerel and other fish.
Other predators including dolphins, seals and seabirds will all be influenced differently by climate change, with varying responses in terms of eating their favourite fish snacks.
Our projections also don't account for continued fishing pressure – for example, 24% of north-east Atlantic fisheries are not sustainable. Further overfishing will compound the strain on fish populations.
To keep stocks healthy, fishery managers need to start planning for these changes now by factoring climate into their stock assessments. Industry regulators will also need to reconsider who gets to fish where as species move.
Fish don't carry passports. Their shifting habitats will challenge longstanding fishing agreements and quotas. Nations that once relied on particular species might lose access. Others may find new, unexpected opportunities.
With smart management and serious action on climate, seafood can thrive in the future. Doing nothing now isn't an option — unless we want familiar favourites like cod to vanish from our plates.

A rare pine tree dubbed the "dinosaur tree" because as a species it is millions of years old, has produced seeds for the first time, after being nurtured for a decade in the UK. The Wollemi pine is part of Pear Tree Garden in Wichenford, Worcestershire, and bore fruit in the form of male and female cones earlier this year. Pam Thompson and her husband planted the tree, unaware of how it may "grow, die or thrive" in their garden. The prehistoric tree, first discovered in Australia in 1994, is one of the rarest trees in the world and is potentially facing extinction. Mrs Thompson told the BBC she intends to share out the seeds of the cones in an effort to get the tree off the critically-endangered list. Mrs Thompson said: "I had been keeping half an eye on a female cone for ages as I was advised they usually drop their seeds in late August early September "This year has been so unusually dry, it happened earlier," she said. "I reached up to a female cone and the seeds all cascaded into my cupped hands as I touched it. "It was very exciting actually collecting the seeds from such an ancient tree that lived when dinosaurs roamed - I shall definitely try to germinate seeds from a critically endangered tree." Unfortunately, we live in a society in which women's bodies have been all but ignored in modern health. 'Historically, women have been excluded from clinical trials and biomedical research because researchers considered the presence of menstruation rendered the biological processes within female bodies too variable to glean reliable results, and/or because of fears of harming the prospects of a future pregnancy,' notes a recent study that looked at sex and gender gaps in medicine and the androcentric history of medical research. 'Thus, most research data have been collected from males and generalized to females, intersex people, transgender people, or gender nonconformists.' Because of this, many of us are wildly unaware of our bodies and the alarm signals it tries to send us. When it comes to the pelvic floor, this is especially true. 'Many women feel embarrassed or do not know who to turn to when they experience urine leakage, a feeling of heaviness in the pelvis, or discomfort during sexual intercourse,' Lola Ibáñez Piñero, a physiotherapist specializing in the pelvic floor notes. Luckily, this is starting to change. More and more women are becoming better informed about the importance of pelvic health and are seeking help. In that spirit, here's a look at some important things to know about this under-discussed health topic. The function of the pelvic floor The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support the bladder, uterus, prostate (in men), and rectum. These muscles form a sling at the base of the pelvis and play a crucial role in certain bodily functions, including bowel and bladder control, sexual function, and core stability. To help visualize how the pelvic floor works, Piñero invites us to imagine a firm, elastic hammock strapped across the bottom of our lower abdomens. 'Hypertonic pelvic floor muscles remain contracted instead of being relaxed and activated when necessary—even at rest,' says Piñero. 'Paradoxically, this makes the area weak and painful.' Among the typical consequences? Urinary incontinence, pain during intercourse, frequency of urination, difficulty evacuating, constipation, a feeling of pelvic blockage, and perineal, vaginal, or anal pain.

Trump admin strips ocean and air pollution monitoring from next-gen weather satellites

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is narrowing the capabilities and reducing the number of next-generation weather and climate satellites it plans to build and launch in the coming decades, two people familiar with the plans told CNN. This move — which comes as hurricane season ramps up with Erin lashing the East Coast — fits a pattern in which the Trump administration is seeking to not only slash climate pollution rules, but also reduce the information collected about the pollution in the first place. Critics of the plan also say it's a short-sighted attempt to save money at the expense of understanding the oceans and atmosphere better. Two planned instruments, one that would measure air quality, including pollution and wildfire smoke, and another that would observe ocean conditions in unprecedented detail, are no longer part of the project, the sources said. 'This administration has taken a very narrow view of weather,' one NOAA official told CNN, noting the jettisoned satellite instruments could have led to better enforcement and regulations on air pollution by more precisely measuring it. The cost of the four satellites, known as the Geostationary Extended Observations, nicknamed GeoXO, would be lower than originally spelled out under the Biden administration, at a maximum of $500 million per year for a total of $12 billion, but some scientists say the cheaper up-front price would come at a cost to those who would have benefited from the air and oceans data. 'Our information will be less rich, and our understanding of the whole phenomenon of a hurricane event, or of a fire event or of a drought event will be lesser because we don't have these context information instruments adding real time, integrated understanding of the events,' the official stated. Both instruments were already contracted to BAE Systems, which could now charge cancelation fees. The changes are aimed at curtailing costs and are due in part to the perception that some of the instruments were going to be focused on gathering data to study climate change. According to a Trump administration budget document, weather forecasting should be the 'exclusive' focus of the satellites. In addition to the reduced number of instruments, NOAA is now only building four satellites as part of the constellation, rather than six, with the first set to launch in 2032. Having fewer satellites in the sky means less redundancy and raises the risk of critical data outages, the NOAA official stated. 'It's gambling with the continuity of an operational system that we've relied on since the early 70s,' they said. The satellite series is meant to be the successor to the GOES satellites, which provide a wealth of data for weather forecasting, with the first launch set for 2032 and service lasting through 2055. CNN has contacted NOAA for comment. The atmospheric composition instrument, for example, would have enabled scientists to more precisely measure air pollutants, which could help reduce health risks from wildfire smoke events. It would also enhance US capabilities to conduct air quality monitoring and forecasting, as well as keep tabs on emissions of greenhouse gases and the pollutants that form smog. The atmospheric composition instrument would have been beneficial for both NOAA's weather and climate missions, according to an assessment of the instrument's value that NOAA performed and was signed off on by the Commerce Department, which oversees NOAA. The instrument, the report said, 'is fundamental to understanding changes in air quality, the stratospheric ozone layer, and climate, as well as their corresponding impacts on human health and natural and engineered ecosystems.' The report warned that without the instrument on GeoXO, the US would risk falling behind other countries' air quality monitoring capabilities, jeopardizing America's longtime leadership in Earth observations. Also cut from the planned GeoXO series of satellites is an instrument that would measure ocean color, which could provide insights into fisheries populations, algal blooms, ocean productivity and water quality. While it is not unheard of for NOAA or Congress to alter major satellite series, given a history of cost and schedule overruns in NOAA satellite programs, cancelling already contracted instruments — and doing so in part due to the administration's determination to focus NOAA more narrowly on weather forecasting, and away from climate change observations and research — stands out. The Trump administration's fiscal year 2026 budget request would close NOAA's extensive research facilities, shutting down its greenhouse gas monitoring network, among others. Congress is currently considering that proposal.
