Three takeaways from GG Jackson, Memphis Grizzlies in summer league loss vs Utah Jazz

Yahoo16-07-2025
The Memphis Grizzlies were tested on July 7 against one of the most experienced rosters participating in the NBA summer league.
The Grizzlies jumped out to a 17-point lead in the first half, but the Jazz didn't take long to erase that deficit with elite shotmaking and strong defense.

Ultimately the game came down to the final minutes of the fourth quarter at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Memphis led for most of the night, but a surging Jazz squad took control late in the fourth quarter.
But then, the Grizzlies had another chance. Utah knocked down two free throws and had a 3-point lead as GG Jackson knocked down a running shot at the buzzer.
The shot was ruled a two after Jackson appeared to have a toe on the 3-point line, ending the game in a 112-111 Grizzlies loss.
Jackson led the Grizzlies with 27 points. Jaylen Wells and Cam Spencer each added 23 points. Zyon Pullin was the only other Grizzlies player in double figures, adding 10 points and nine assists.

Here are three takeaways from the game.
Cam Spencer, GG Jackson pace Memphis offense
GG Jackson and Cam Spencer are both known for their offensive skills at this point of their careers, and they're emphatically showing why during summer league.
Jackson had a balanced performance, mixing in aggressive two-handed dunks and drives to the rim with a feathery 3-point shot that looks improved. He played with confidence and sometimes looked like he was moving at a different speed than opponents.
Aggressiveness was also a strong point in Spencer's game. He made three 3-pointers early in the first quarter. When it was clear he had the hot hand, Spencer hunted his shot by making himself available to teammates and using pump fakes and dribbles moves to get the separation he needed to fire off a 3-pointer. He knocked down seven of his 10 3-point attempts.

Memphis is replacing two of the NBA's best 3-point shooters in Desmond Bane and Luke Kennard. Spencer, who was a noted 3-point shooter coming out of college in 2024, is looking like a player ready to help fill that void.
Jaylen Well stats
Wells got a little bit of summer league adversity against the Jazz. At one point, he missed six consecutive shots and struggled to find an offensive groove. He continued to play strong defense, and eventually more shots started falling.
Wells finished with 23 points on 6-for-18 shooting. As a rookie, Wells had a role that consisted mostly of defending wings and making 3-pointers. His role should expand going into his second season, meaning he'll have to be more of a contributor in other areas. He finished with two assists, one steal and one rebound against Utah.

One rookie in, one rookie out
The NBA draft night trade that included Grizzlies rookie Jahmai Mashack became official on July 6. Despite not participating in any practices ahead of shootaround on July 7, Mashack made his Grizzlies debut against the Jazz.
Mashack didn't waste much time making an impact. For better or worse, he came out aggressive. Mashack showed playmaking potential with his ability to dribble, drive and find teammates. He ended the game with five points and eight assists.

On the other hand, his defense led to two steals and 10 fouls. In summer league, players get up to 10 fouls, but that ratio will need to shift by the fall.

While Memphis got Mashack in, rookie guard Javon Small was out. Small is dealing with a groin strain, a team spokesperson told The Commercial Appeal. He led the Grizzlies with six assists in his summer league debut on July 5.
What's next
Memphis will have a quick turnaround for a game against the Philadelphia 76ers on July 8 (6 p.m., NBA TV). This will be the Grizzlies' last game in Salt Late City. They'll then head to Las Vegas four at least four more games.

Grand Slam Track misses payments to athletes, Michael Johnson ‘confident' of its future

Grand Slam Track (GST) has missed payments to its athletes due to not receiving funding which had been committed to the competition, founder and four-time Olympic champion Michael Johnson said on Friday. The fourth and final meet of GST's inaugural season, due to take place in Los Angeles in June, was cancelled. Organisers said at the time it was a decision 'rooted in a belief that we have successfully achieved the objectives we set out to in this pilot season,' however, in a statement issued on Friday, Johnson said it was determined curtailing the season was the 'best thing to do' to avoid further losses and begin the process of 'stabilising the company'. Advertisement The statement read: 'It is incredibly difficult to live with the reality that you've built something bigger than yourself while simultaneously feeling like you've let down the very people you set out to help. However, I have to own that. 'And yes, the cruellest paradox in all of this is we promised that athletes would be fairly and quickly compensated. Yet, here we are struggling with our ability to compensate them. 'We were devastated when we learned we would not receive the funding committed to us. We worked tirelessly alongside our investors and board to find a quick solution to the problem. Up until and even after the LA postponement, we were getting positive signs that a solution was close.' Johnson added GST 'offered dated payment timelines and have been unable to meet them'. Upon its formation, GST announced it had $30million in financial commitments from its partners, with primary funding coming from Winners Alliance, an organisation which prioritises athletes' interests. Three GST events took place in its inaugural season: in Kingston, Miami and Philadelphia. The event attempted to bring track athletics into the sporting mainstream between the Olympics, which are held every four years. Athletics' World Championships, meanwhile, is a bi-annual event, and GST incentivised its participants with a sizeable prize pot. The event offered winners of each race $100,000, scaling down to $10,000 for eighth place. 'Understandably, this has led to frustration, disappointment, and inconvenience to our athletes, agents, and vendors,' Johnson said. 'I know this damages trust. I know this makes some wonder if our vision can survive. That is why we are not just addressing the immediate problem; we are putting systems and partnerships in place to make sure it never happens again.' Advertisement Johnson said the 2026 GST season will not take place 'until those obligations are met' and it is prioritising 'satisfying our outstanding debt in order to continue the momentum toward a better future for athletes, fans, and the league,' though stressed the process 'takes time'. 'Despite the challenges of the past few months, I remain confident about the future of Grand Slam Track,' Johnson said. Since 2010, the most notable global track and field series has been the invitational Diamond League, in which athletes try to accumulate the most points over 14 meetings to qualify for the end-of-season final. The Diamond League said this year's edition will see around $18 million (£13.47 million) paid to athletes, which includes promotional fees for the biggest names. U.S. athletes Kenny Bednarek and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won GST's Racer of the Year awards after the three events in the 2025 campaign. Both Bednarek and Jefferson-Wooden won the short sprints event, comprising 100m and 200m, in each of the three meets. (Roger Wimmer/) Spot the pattern. Why Sean Payton believes Broncos will have ‘markedly different' run game in 2025

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — It has been an offseason of bold proclamations from Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton. He has expressed a belief that Bo Nix, his second-year quarterback, will be one of the NFL's 'four or five' best within the next two seasons. He has an inkling that this Denver roster, like six in New Orleans that previously gave him in the same feeling, has a chance to compete for a Super Bowl. Advertisement On Thursday, Payton had another prediction. 'You're going to see, hopefully,' the coach said, 'a markedly different running game.' The Broncos worked tirelessly this offseason to fulfill that promise. After Denver's season ended with a thud in a lopsided loss to the Buffalo Bills in the wild-card round of the playoffs, the lack of production from the running back spot stuck out like a sore thumb and a bruised ego. The three players at the position produced only 37 yards on 11 carries. Nix, not a running back, was the team's leading rusher (43 yards) for the sixth time in the team's 18 games. So, the Broncos 'immediately upgraded that position,' Payton said, selecting RJ Harvey in the second round of April's NFL Draft before signing JK Dobbins in the late stages of free agency. 'I think this with the running game: It's going to be different,' Payton said after Thursday's joint practice with the Arizona Cardinals. 'When we went through the cutups and watched the offensive line, we just felt like there are other teams where that player is the spaghetti sauce — sometimes there's a safety that's (forced) down in the box. We brought in leadership with J.K. and we drafted Harvey early, so you're going to see a difference. '… It's not always going to be perfect, but that's the magic of the good back. There's been a lot of great runs where maybe the looks weren't as clean, and it was the ability (of the player). When we watch tapes, sometimes we say, 'The play or the player?' As coaches, we're trying to give them as many plays (that are) good, clean, and yet there are times where it's the player (who makes the play work). I think that we're going to be further along there.' The Broncos changed the players and the plays this offseason in the running game. During training camp, a parade of blockers who have spoken at a podium outside the team's locker room following practices have made references to a scheme that has undergone substantial tweaks since the end of last season. Most notably, the offense emphasizes more outside zone concepts, an adjustment that better suits Denver's personnel both along the offensive front and in the backfield. Advertisement 'I think we've always wanted to be kind of an outside zone team and (now) we're just kind of committing to it,' tight end Adam Trautman said. The hope is that the changes — both in personnel and scheme — will make the Broncos not only more consistent as a rushing outfit, but also more explosive. The team's running backs produced only one run of more than 25 yards last season, tied for the second-fewest in the NFL. The Broncos ranked 27th in runs of 20 or more yards from running backs with four. 'We first look at ourselves, the scheme, and are we doing it the way we want to?' Payton said on the team creating more chunk plays in the run game this season. 'Then, we're looking at who are we asking to do it with. Obviously, we've added some players in the running back room, and we're going to be much improved in that area.' Harvey saw significant action as a ball-carrier in last week's preseason opener against the 49ers. He showcased the dynamic outside element the Broncos believe he'll add to their running game when he bounced a zone run outside and got the edge before turning upfield for a 12-yard gain. On another play, though, Harvey got antsy, bypassing a big inside hole just as it materialized, re-routing the carry to the outside instead. He nearly reached the edge, but a 49ers defensive back made a shoestring tackle to drop Harvey for a loss. It was a lesson for the rookie ball-carrier. Still, the Broncos are also being careful not to put too many restrictions on Harvey, who Payton calls 'an extremely instinctive runner.' 'There are times, maybe, where he bounces it (outside) where you wish he hadn't, but he usually outruns everybody, so it works out,' offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said. 'He's doing a really good job and I think he'll just keep getting better.' As much as the Broncos are optimistic about Harvey and the running game's potential, Payton said Thursday the complete picture for that phase is still coming together with Denver's season opener against the Tennessee Titans about three weeks away. Harvey and Dobbins, who have split first-team reps throughout most of training camp, will be on the roster. The rest of the running back room is still to be determined. Each of the other four backs — Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estimé, Tyler Badie and Blake Watson — has had bright moments in camp and brings different elements to the room. But even if the Broncos keep four running backs at cutdown day, something Payton said is well within the realm of possibility, that leaves a pair of talented backs off the initial 53-man roster. Advertisement 'If you recall, at the start of training camp, I said we're all going to know,' who the right running backs are, Payton said Thursday. 'I hopefully am going to be right, but we all don't know and it's still a very competitive spot. … We don't know yet.' Payton plans to rest his starters in Saturday's second preseason game against the Cardinals. That likely means Dobbins and Harvey will be spectators as the other four enter their biggest audition of the offseason so far. They are all vying to be part of a 'markedly different' run game that serves as the key to Payton's other bold predictions for the season coming to life. 'We're rooting for them all,' Payton said.
