Ja Morant, Grizzlies vs LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Lakers if NBA playoffs started today

A wild Wednesday night added more intrigue and clarity to the Western Conference's evolving playoff picture. The San Antonio Spurs pulled the upset of the night by knocking off the Golden State Warriors. That game alone has put the Memphis Grizzlies in a favorable spot. Advertisement The goal is to avoid the NBA play-in by securing a guaranteed spot in the playoffs. Only the top six seeds avoid the play-in. Memphis is currently seeded sixth, which would match it up against the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round. Sounds familiar? The last Grizzlies playoffs series in 2023 was a six-game battle against the Lakers. Memphis lost, but both teams have made notable changes in the last two years. While the Lakers could be the opponent today, things could change by tomorrow. Memphis has a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday (8:30 p.m., TNT), then another matchup versus the Denver Nuggets on Friday. Advertisement Here's how the current playoff picture looks. NBA Western Conference standings today What's next Memphis is currently sixth, but there's still no margin for error. Golden State holds the tiebreaker over the Grizzlies, so if Memphis loses and Golden State wins its next game, the Grizzlies would fall back into the play-in. If that happens, Friday's game against Denver would have even higher stakes. Memphis can still own a tiebreaker over the Nuggets by winning their final matchup, meaning finishing with a similar record would give Memphis the edge. A win against the Timberwolves mean the Grizzlies can't finish any lower than seventh in the standings. In that case, Memphis would host a play-in postseason game if it failed to finish in the top six. Ja Morant will pay fine for Grizzlies rookie Cam Spencer after his Kevin Durant beef

During a game on Monday night, Memphis Grizzlies rookie Cam Spencer hit a huge shot over Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant. Spencer, 24, is a former collegiate national champion who played a big role for UConn last season before he was selected in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. The guard had played just a dozen games for the Grizzlies before stepping into a bigger role for Memphis on Monday evening. He finished with a career-high 16 points, shooting 4-of-7 on 3-pointers including the big shot over Durant. Following the shot over KD, however, he exchanged some words with the 15-time NBA All-Star forward that led to a brief bit of chaos between the two games. Grizzlies-Suns getting CHIPPY 🍿KD shared some words with Cam Spencer and Desmond Bane 👀 — Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) March 11, 2025 Spencer clearly said something that upset Durant, which didn't seem to sit well with the two-time NBA Finals MVP. Durant seemed to put his hand near Spencer's face afterward, which began a back-and-forth interaction with Memphis guard Desmond Bane. After a couple seconds, Spencer stepped back in to defend himself as well before the sides were seperated. Spencer did not reveal what was said in the exchange because it was "not good for TV" and should stay on the court. What did Cam Spencer say to KD?'Not good for TV' 😭 — House of Highlights (@HoHighlights) March 11, 2025 Durant and Spencer were both issued technical fouls for their roles in the altercation, and while that's not a big deal for the Phoenix superstar, it's a little bit more of a financial strain for the Memphis rookie. The technical foul will come with a fine that is a fraction of the percentage of Durant's max contract. But for Spencer, who is on a two-way deal, it's slightly more costly. The good news is that Memphis star Ja Morant said he would gladly pick up the bill for the rookie. Bane said he was planning to do the same.
