Memphis Grizzlies need more than small sample size of Cam Spencer's shooting ability
Jaylen Wells and Zach Edey both finished in the top five in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting, and both were named first-team All-Rookie. The Grizzlies have had a member on the All-Rookie team in five of the past seven seasons.

Lost in the shuffle of the terrific 2024 class was another second-round pick who is looking to certify his positioning. Cam Spencer has a big summer ahead, and there's reason to believe the Grizzlies are confident that he can become a more reliable option in Year 2.
Memphis wants to put more players it refers to as "dogs" around the core players. General manager Zach Kleiman pointed out Wells, Edey and Scotty Pippen Jr. as players who fit that mold. Then he named someone who appeared in just 25 games.
"Cam Spencer is a Grizzly bear," Kleiman said. "Cam Spencer's got that in spades. I think he's got a bright future, too."

Spencer's rookie season didn't get off to a typical start. After an encouraging performance in summer league, he started preseason camp with a severe ankle injury. That sidelined him until Nov. 20, when he finally made his season debut.

A string of sporadic performances followed until Spencer was injured in January, and he did not play again until March.
However, it was one of those March performances that have the Grizzlies eager to see what Spencer can do in his second season. He provided a major spark on March 10 in a 120-118 win against the Phoenix Suns, making four 3-pointers and scoring 16 points while also trash-talking with future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant.
Because Spencer was on a two-way contract, he was ineligible for the playoffs, and he didn't receive much playing time for the remainder of the season.
A role for the taking
The Grizzlies drafted Spencer in part because they believed he was one of the top shooters available in the NBA draft, the same reason they had traded for Luke Kennard in 2023.

With Kennard entering free agency, Memphis has a shooting void to fill, and the answer already might be on the roster. Spencer shot 35.8% on 3-pointers this season, but he did so in an irregular role. More consistent minutes should yield more accurate results.
Kennard wasn't always the most aggressive shooter despite being one of the league's most accurate marksmen. Spencer could jump right in and excel if he displays an ability to be accurate as well as aggressive as a shooter.
Summer league
The first test for Spencer will come in summer league.
Wells, Edey and GG Jackson are among the Grizzlies players interested in suiting up for games this summer. Spencer teaming up with those players will be a good gauge as to how his aggressiveness can translate to the regular season.

If the G League was any indication, Spencer won't be hesitant. In eight games between the Tip-Off Tournament and Memphis Hustle regular season, he averaged 23.5 points and attempted 9.1 3-pointers per game, making 49.3% of them.

Giancarlo Stanton hits two of Yankees' nine home runs in 13-3 rout of Rays
The Yankees smashed nine home runs in their 13-3 rout of the Rays in Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. With the win, New York extended its winning streak to four games, and after the Mariners and Red Sox lost earlier in the evening, the Yankees (68-57) are now alone atop the AL wild card race. Here are the takeaways... -After nearly a two-hour weather delay, the Yankees sluggers brought the thunder when the game started. Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton went back-to-back-to-back with one out in the first inning to give New York an early 3-0 lead off of starter Shane Baz. The power display didn't end there. Jose Caballero launched a two-run shot in the second inning, his first with the Yankees. The blast came minutes after the Rays showed a tribute video to Caballero in between innings. Jazz Chisholm Jr. joined in the homer party, launching a solo shot to right field in the third inning. Entering Tuesday's game, the most home runs Baz allowed in a game was three. The Yankees put up five off the young starter, but it didn't end when Baz was pulled. Against the bullpen, the Yankees would smash two more homers in the fourth inning. Stanton's three-run blast and Ben Rice following with a solo shot put New York up 10-2 and put the home run counter to seven. Bellinger launched his second blast of the game with his two-run shot in the sixth. The Yankees' power display finished with Caballero going yard a second time in the ninth inning to set the final home run count to nine. The Yankees have hit eight-plus homers four times in their history, and two have come this season. Their nine homers tie a franchise record, which was set this season on March 29 against the Brewers. -Carlos Rodon had a bit of trouble with control thanks to the heat in Tampa. Rodon, a notorious sweater, could not get a good grip on the ball. He was constantly wiping his pitching arm on his pants leg. The rain in the area made it much more humid than it was earlier in the day, but Rodon worked through it, getting out of a two-baserunner jam in the first. Rodon's control issues continued in the second inning as the Rays batters barrelled up his pitches in the zone for hits. Three straight singles pushed across Tampa's first run. Chandler Simpson's fielder's choice got the Rays another run before Rodon picked up the third out, still leading 5-2. But that's all the Rays would get on Rodon, who gutted through six innings (102 pitches/64 strikes), allowing two runs on five hits, two walks and striking out five. -The combination of Mark Leiter Jr., Yerry De Los Santos and Tim Hill picked up the final nine outs, but after Leiter pitched a clean seventh, De Los Santos struggled in the eighth. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk. Hill allowed one hit in an otherwise clean ninth inning to finish the game. -Stanton, starting his first game since the homestand last week after feeling general soreness from playing right field on multiple days, showed how important he is to the Yankees lineup. Starting in right field, Stanton finished 2-for-3 and a walk with two blasts while driving in four runs. It's his first multi-homer game since June 2023. Manager Aaron Boone would pull Stanton after his fourth at-bat to give his slugger the rest of the game off his feet. Jasson Dominguez would replace him and go 0-for-1 in his lone AB. Bellinger had his second multi-homer game of the season. The first was his three-homer game against the Cubs back in July. He finished 4-for-5. Greene has 12 Ks, Marte hits a HR and drives in 2 as Reds beat Angels 6-4
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Hunter Greene had 12 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings, Noelvi Marte homered, doubled and drove in two runs, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-4 on Tuesday night. Jose Trevino scored on a sacrifice fly by TJ Friedl and Gavin Lux followed with an RBI double off Kenley Jansen (5-3) in the ninth inning to give Cincinnati a 6-4 lead. Miguel Andujar was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Greene allowed three runs on six hits and walked none. Luis Mey (2-0) pitched the eighth inning and gave up Jo Adell's second solo homer of the game but got the win. Elly De La Cruz walked with two out in the fifth and then scored from first base on a single by Andujar. Mike Trout doubled and then scored when Taylor Ward hit the next pitch — a 100 mph fastball — to right field for a single in the first. Adell hit a solo homer in the seventh. De La Cruz singled to lead off the fourth and scored when Andujar hit the fourth consecutive sinker thrown by Kyle Hendricks for a double. After Austin Hays walked, Marte doubled to drive in Andujar and give the Reds a 3-1 lead. Marte extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Key moment After Marte struck out swinging to lead off the ninth, Trevino singled, Ke'Bryan Hayes was hit by a pitch and pinch-hitter Will Benson walked to load the bases before Friedl gave Cincinnati the lead for good. Key stat Greene is the first Reds pitcher to strike out at least 12 batters and walk none since Johnny Cueto on June 11, 2014.
