Kohli and Rohit, former captains and batting mainstays of the team, both quit tests weeks before the start of India's five-test series in England. India named top-order batsman Gill as their new test captain in May, picking the 25-year-old over pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah to replace Rohit. India have long recognised Gill's leadership qualities, previously naming him vice-captain in both white-ball formats, while he also had two seasons as skipper of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans. "Honestly, when I want to go out there and bat, I just want to play as a batsman, not really want to think that I'm the captain of the team because I think that sometimes puts too much pressure on you," Gill told reporters on Thursday. "Whenever I'm going out there, I want to play as a batsman and want to dominate the opposition and be the best batsman in the series, and that's what I'm trying to look at." Gill said captaining India to a series win over England would be bigger than triumphing in the IPL, which he won with Gujarat in 2022. "Definitely the test series, in my opinion," he said. "You don't get many opportunities as a captain to be able to come to England, maybe two; if you are the best of your generation, maybe three. And IPL comes every year, and you get to have a crack at it every year. "So in my opinion, winning a test series in England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa is bigger." Gill, who has scored 1,893 runs in 32 test matches with an average of 35.05, will drop down one spot in the order to take Kohli's old position at number four. "After Virat bhai (brother) retired, me and GG (coach Gautam Gambhir) bhai had a discussion about it, and we were both clear that he wanted me to bat at number four, and I was also clear that I also wanted to bat at that number," Gill said. Kohli, who scored 9,230 runs in tests including 30 centuries, followed former captain Rohit Sharma into retirement from the format last month. India named Gill as their new test captain in May, picking the 25-year-old batter over pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. "I think Shubman is going to bat at number four and I'm going to stick to number five as of now," Pant told reporters. "And (the) rest, we are going to keep on discussing about that. "Obviously, it's a new start for us, big people have left. Yes, there will be a gap, but at the same time, it's an opportunity for us to build a new culture from here or take a culture forward from there, just adding to it." Pant said his friendship with Gill will help them tackle the leadership responsibilities, with their first big challenge coming up on Friday when the first test kicks off at Leeds. "If you're good friends off the field, it eventually comes on the field. It's much better for cricket always, and that is something I've always believed in," he said. "He's a really impressive player and an impressive young man...," Buttler, who played under Gill at Gujarat, said on the 'For the Love of Cricket' podcast. "I feel like, on the field he's got a bit of fight about him — a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit. "Kohli (was) that sort of real aggressive (character), really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight. "I feel like, from my time knowing Shubman so far, he'll be a bit in the middle. He's obviously learned from those two guys ... but he'll be very much his own man." India play England in a five-match test series starting on Friday at Headingley, and Buttler said Gill will be in the spotlight. "Kohli is the king, Shubman is the prince — that's the narrative that they spin out there, and I feel that he's the coming man," said Buttler, who stepped down as England's white-ball captain in February after their Champions Trophy exit. "Stepping into that number four, it's big shoes, isn't it? Coming behind Virat, and Sachin Tendulkar before that as well. That's obviously a huge role."
