
The Quranic ethics for defending truth
In today's world, defending the truth has become an increasingly exhausting and often futile endeavour. The problem is that truth is no longer universally accepted as a shared reality. In many quarters, it has become a tribal marker, a symbol of identity rather than a principle of inquiry. When a person's worldview is threatened, they may resist facts not because the facts are unclear, but because the facts unsettle their sense of self, community or power. In such a climate, defending truth is less about evidence and more about navigating psychological, social and moral resistance.
This dynamics echoes the classical problem known as motivated reasoning: people accept information that confirms their beliefs and reject what challenges them. It is a human trait but in the digital age of endless information and echo chambers, it becomes amplified. The consequence is an infinite deflection loop, where no amount of evidence suffices because each piece of proof is met with a new demand or dismissal. Philosophers like Harry Frankfurt have described this as bullshit — communication untethered from a concern for truth.
Faced with this, the question arises: is defending truth worth the effort? Here, the Qur'an offers timeless wisdom that remains urgently relevant. It does not ask believers to engage every opponent with forceful rebuttal or arrogance. Rather, it prescribes a mode of witnessing truth with dignity and wisdom. As the Qur'an states, "Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching, and argue with them in a way that is best" (16:125). This injunction recognises that truth flourishes best not when it is wielded as a weapon but when it is offered gently and respectfully.
Moreover, the Qur'an acknowledges the limitations of human effort in guidance. "Indeed, you cannot guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills" (28:56). This reminder frees the truth-teller from the burden of forcing change on others and instead encourages patience and humility.
When confronted with arrogance or ignorance that persists despite evidence and reason, the Qur'an counsels restraint: "And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant address them harshly, they say: 'Peace'" (25:63). This powerful verse does not call for surrender but for a dignified transcendence - a refusal to descend into conflict and a choice to preserve one's own peace and integrity.
This ethic has profound implications for today's hyper-polarised, often toxic public discourse. The temptation to meet hostility with hostility, or ignorance with condescension, is strong but self-defeating. Instead, the Qur'anic model asks us to plant seeds of truth through respectful dialogue, to withdraw gracefully when resistance hardens into rejection, and to trust that truth will reveal itself in time.
Indeed, not every conversation will end in consensus or enlightenment. Some will hold fast to illusions or defensive worldviews until they can no longer do so. But this is not a failure of truth itself, only of its reception. The believer's task is to embody and witness truth faithfully, without becoming embittered or aggressive.
In a world where epistemic chaos reigns and trust in institutions and facts is eroding, this approach is not merely idealistic — it is necessary. Truth does not need to shout or dominate; it only needs steadfast witnesses who remain polite, positive and patient.
To be a defender of truth today means accepting that your role is often to illuminate rather than to convince, to invite rather than to coerce, and to say "peace" when the conversation ceases to be productive. It means embodying the wisdom that the Qur'an extols — a wisdom that values the method of truth-telling as much as the message itself.
Ultimately, defending truth is a moral struggle, not just an intellectual one. It demands courage to stand by what is right even when it is rejected; humility to accept that guidance is not fully in our hands; and grace to disengage when engagement becomes futile. This triad — courage, humility and grace — is the legacy of the Qur'anic witness and a beacon for those who seek clarity in an age of confusion.

DGPR PID Karachi felicitated after performing Umrah
KARACHI: DGPR PID Karachi Irum Tanweer was graced with bouquet of flowers by the officers of Press Information Department and Directorate of Electronic Media Publication on her return to Karachi after performing Umrah. Irum Tanweer had been in Saudi Arabia for the last two weeks. All the officers extended felicitation of Umrah Mubarak to her and wished for the culmination of all her prayers. She presented the Tabarrukat (sacred relics) such as variety of dates and Ab-e-zamzam to the officers brought from Saudia. While expressing her intention of praying all officers of PID, she said that it was believed in common parlance that prayers were more likely to be accepted after such a blessed journey. She further said that there could be an expectation that someone returning from Umrah would strive to maintain a higher level of piety and good deeds, reflecting the spiritual purification and closeness to Allah, which she also experienced during her Umrah Mubarak. Pilgrims ascend Mount Arafat for Hajj climax

Thousands of white-robed pilgrims recited verses from the holy Quran from dawn on the 70-metre (230 feet) rocky rise near Makkah, where the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) gave his last sermon. But numbers thinned by midday following official warnings for pilgrims to stay inside between 10:00am and 4:00pm, a year after 1,301 people died in temperatures that hit 51.8 degrees Celsius (125 degrees Fahrenheit). Delivering the annual Hajj sermon at Masjid-e-Nimrah in Arafat, the Imam and Khateeb of the Grand Mosque, Sheikh Dr Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid, emphasised the profound spiritual and unifying significance of the Day of Arafah, urging Muslims around the world to uphold the true essence of Islam through faith, humility, and sincere devotion to Allah. Addressing the pilgrims, Sheikh Dr Humaid highlighted Islam's core principles, underscoring the importance of monotheism, compassion, moral conduct, and social justice. He called on believers to strengthen their connection with Allah through constant remembrance, heartfelt prayers, and righteous deeds, especially on this sacred day known for divine mercy and the acceptance of supplications. "The Day of Arafah is not only a symbol of unity for the Ummah but also a reminder of our collective submission to the Creator. On this day, Allah's mercy descends abundantly, and prayers are answered. Let us fill our hearts with gratitude and our tongues with His praise," he said. "I came here early to (avoid) the sun and later I will pray inside my tent," said 54-year-old Adel Ismail, from Syria. Saudi authorities have taken several steps to reduce the risk from heat at the Hajj, which has drawn more than 1.6 million pilgrims to one of the world's hottest regions, according to fresh figures published on Thursday. Shaded areas have been expanded by 50,000 square metres (12 acres), thousands more medics are on standby and more than 400 cooling units have been deployed, the hajj minister told AFP last week. The Saudis have also cracked down on unregistered, non-fee paying pilgrims, who lack access to the full amenities and made up more than 80 percent of last year's deaths. On Thursday, icepacks were handed to people walking towards Mount Arafat, with some placing the small bags on their heads. With temperatures reaching 42C (107.6F), officials ushered people away if they spent too long in one place near the bouldered hill, which had fans spraying mist and cool air at its foot. Late Thursday afternoon, pilgrims began making their way to Muzdalifah, halfway between Arafat and the sprawling tent city of Mina, where they will gather pebbles for Friday's symbolic "stoning of the devil". Despite the heat, they were generally delighted to be performing the Hajj. "I don't think about the sun or the temperature or anything like that," said Ahmed, a 44-year-old from Egypt. "Because standing in Arafat is a great thing and a beautiful day, and as you can see, all the pilgrims" are doing it. Ali, 33, from Pakistan, said he felt "blessed" to take part. "This is something that I used to see every year on the TV screen during Hajj and I always thought: "I wish I could be here'," he said. Through tears of joy, Iman Abdel Khaleq said she had wanted to perform the Hajj for 10 years and was overwhelmed with emotion as she arrived at Arafat. "It's a big dream for me that I had almost given up hope of realising," the Egyptian woman in her 50s told AFP from the foot of the mount. Saudi officials said the heat-mitigation measures implemented this Hajj had largely been successful in preventing a repeat of last year. "We are encountering a limited number of heat related illnesses cases this year and this is evidence of the effectiveness of all the organisation measures as well as preventive measures," said Mohammed Al-Abd Al-Aali, Saudi Arabia's assistant minister of health. Along with the anti-heat measures and thousands of extra personnel, Saudi Arabia is also using an arsenal of high-tech tools to help better manage crowds. More than 15,000 cameras run through artificial intelligence software are monitoring the holy sites and walkways during an event that has a history of deadly stampedes. This year, officials have also clamped down hard on unregistered pilgrims looking to sneak into Makkah, using raids, drone surveillance and a barrage of text alerts.
