Amarnath yatra routes declared 'No Flying Zone'
Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) declared the Amarnath yatra routes as 'No Flying Zone' as part of beefed up security measures for the annual pilgrimage.
The Amarnath yatra has two routes - the traditional Pahalgam route and the shorter Baltal route.
The declaration issued by Jammu and Kashmir Home Department on the orders of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said flying of any kind of aviation platforms and devices, including UAVs, drones, balloons, is prohibited from July 1 to August 10.
However, the restrictions will not be applicable in the cases of medical evacuation, disaster management and for surveillance by security forces. A detailed SOP for such exceptions will be issued subsequently.
The order said in view of the Shri Amarnathji Yatra, which is scheduled from July 3, various security arrangements are being undertaken for smooth and peaceful conduct of the yatra.
"All stakeholders have discussed the prevailing security scenario in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir and have proposed additional logistics provisions," the order said.
It said the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has also advised that the entire route of Shri Amarnathji Yatra may be declared as 'No Flying Zone' from July 1 to August 10.
"Therefore, with a view to ensure strengthened security during the Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 2025, all the routes of Shri Amarnathji Yatra are hereby declared as 'No Flying Zone', including both Pahalgam axis & Baltal axis," the order said.
The beefed up security measures come in the backdrop of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead.
The Amarnath yatra attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the country reach year.

"In 2017, he was removed from excavation work and denied permission to write the report. Only after a legal battle was he allowed to submit his report. Two years after submission, the ASI has not released the report yet," he said. Venkatesan said the Centre is sending a message that any official who reveals 'uncomfortable' historical truths would be sidelined. "This is not just an administrative transfer. It is part of a pattern of intimidation," he said.

Srinagar: J&K administration on Tuesday declared all Amarnath Yatra routes as 'no fly zones' between July 1 and August 10 as a security measure to provide foolproof security to the upcoming Yatra. An order issued by the Home Department said that the Lt Governor (L-G) has given strict security directives regarding aerial activity during the upcoming Shri Amarnathji Yatra 2025, declaring all Yatra routes as "No Flying Zones" between July 1 and August 10, 2025. "In view of the forthcoming Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 2025, which is scheduled we.f. 03.07.2025 to 09.08.2025, various security arrangements are being undertaken for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the Yatra, and all the stakeholders have discussed the prevailing security scenario and have proposed additional logistics provisions," reads an official order. It added that the Ministry of Home Affairs have also advised that the entire route of Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 2025 may be declared as 'No Flying Zone' w.e.f. July 01 to August 10, 2025. The government said that to ensure strengthened security during the Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 2025, all the routes of Shri Amarnathji Yatra are hereby declared as 'No Flying Zone' including both Pahalgam axis and Baltal axis and thus, flying of any kind of aviation platforms and devices including UAVs, Drones, Balloons, etc. is prohibited. Adopt Telangana model of caste census, Congress tells Centre
Urging the Centre to follow the Telangana model of caste enumeration and accusing it of delaying the exercise, the Congress on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) said the government's latest announcement was aimed at 'grabbing headlines, buying time and managing the narrative'. On Monday (June 16, 2025), the Union Ministry of Home Affairs said the next Census will be conducted in 2027. It also reiterated that caste census will be part of the exercise. Addressing a press conference here, Congress general secretary Sachin Pilot asked the government to be transparent about the caste census. He said the objective cannot just be to collect data on an individual's caste but to understand the socio-economic conditions of families, and create policies to substantially improve their livelihoods. 'Without tangible data on caste, no State or Central government can implement targeted interventions, which is what we [the Congress] aimed to achieve. I would urge the Modi government to follow the Telangana model and have a more consultative process,' Mr. Pilot said. 'Funds inadequate' He said there are doubts about the government's intentions with regard to the caste census as the funds allocated for it was only ₹574 crore while almost ₹10,000 crore would be required for the exercise. When the Congress raised the demand for caste census, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said people who made such demands were 'urban naxals', he said. 'The demand for a caste census was led by the Congress, particularly by the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, who has been raising this issue for several years. Due to the party's continuous and forceful demand, the Modi government has yielded and announced a caste census. However, the facts and figures tell a different story,' he said at the party's Indira Bhavan headquarters. To underscore the point of Mr. Gandhi's 'relentless campaign' for caste census, Indian Youth Congress chief Uday Bhanu Chhib said the party will organise seminars on caste census across the country on June 19 to mark Mr. Gandhi's birthday.
