In an interview, veteran producer-director Suneel Darshan described his professional equation with actor Sunny Deol as the 'darkest chapter' of his career. Darshan revealed the collaboration began with promise—starting with films like 'Inteqam' and 'Lootere'—but later turned 'nightmarish,' involving alleged emotional manipulation. He claims Sunny took money for a project that never materialised and described working with him as 'like indulging a little child.' Despite the trauma, Darshan maintained respect for the Deol family and refused to blame Dharmendra. While he appreciated working with Akshay Kumar, Darshan said the unresolved dispute with Sunny still weighs on him—and that he believes in divine justice.

This Superstar Promised 100 Films To A Director Who Saved His Career, Then Ghosted Him
Actor Akshay Kumar may be one of Bollywood's most bankable stars today, but his rise to superstardom wasn't smooth. He faced a prolonged low in the late 90s, when 13 to 14 of his films tanked back-to-back. At a time when even established producers distanced themselves from him, one filmmaker saw potential in a fading star, and took a chance no one else was willing to take. (News18 Hindi) That filmmaker was Sunil Darshan. Speaking to Bollywood Bubble, Darshan recalled how Akshay had practically pleaded for a role in Jaanwar, a film that would later prove to be the turning point in his career. "Akshay was at a stage where he had completely stopped getting offers," Darshan said, "He came to me when no one else would take him. He didn't know what to do next." (News18 Hindi) According to Darshan, the script of Jaanwar was originally penned with Sunny Deol in mind. Darshan had even approached Ajay Devgn as a fallback after a fallout with Deol. But then Akshay called. "I wasn't keen initially,' Darshan admitted, "But we spoke again. He seemed sincere, disciplined, but his market value was almost zero at the time." (News18 Hindi) Despite that, Darshan trusted his instinct. He paired Akshay with Karisma Kapoor, one of the top actresses of the time, and released Jaanwar in 1999. The film was a box-office success, and for Akshay, it marked a crucial comeback. (News18 Hindi) What followed was a fruitful collaboration between the two. They worked on a total of seven films together, including Ek Rishtaa, Talaash, Dosti, Mere Jeevan Saathi, and Andaaz. (News18 Hindi) Darshan even gave Akshay a workspace in his own office. "For seven years he was with me. While others were laughing at him or rejecting him, I supported him wholeheartedly," Darshan said. But the bond didn't last. (News18 Hindi) In the glow of Jaanwar 's success, Darshan says Akshay made a grand promise. "He took me aside and told me, 'Please don't cast anyone else in your next film. It will damage my career. Sunil ji, I promise you 100 films.'" Darshan believed him. (News18 Hindi) However, the warmth faded by their sixth or seventh collaboration. Darshan says he sensed a visible change in Akshay's attitude, one that hinted the actor was ready to move on. "We were once friends," he reflected, "But things shifted. Eventually, we stopped working together. And it's now been 20 years since we last met." (News18 Hindi) Since then, Darshan says their only contact has been a birthday wish or two from Akshay, a far cry from the emotional appeal and promises made two decades ago. (News18 Hindi) The director maintains he holds no bitterness, but does admit the silence hurts. "Making seven films together is no small feat," he said, adding that sometimes, success changes people in ways one doesn't expect. (News18 Hindi)
