Series compared to Friends leaves fans begging for one thing after 8 episodes

Metro3 days ago

It's been over 30 years since the first episode of Friends, when Rachel Green infamously ran into Central Perk in a wedding dress – now there's a new show about New Yorkers muddling through in their twenties in its stead.
The eight-episode comedy Adults sees a group of twenty-something housemates navigating the highs and lows of adulthood together and it's already being compared to the sitcom classic.
The new Disney Plus show follows the close-knit – and perhaps codependent – friendship group of Samir (Malik Elassal), Billie (Lucy Freyer), Paul (Jack Innanen), Issa (Amita Rao) and Anton (Owen Thiele) as they live together in Samir's childhood home in Queens.
With a stellar soundtrack and guest stars ranging from Charlie Cox to Julia Fox, the show has already gone down a storm with Disney subscribers and is climbing up the platform's UK top 10 ranking.
The official synopsis for Adults reads: 'Whether they're trying to get ahead at work, navigating the healthcare system, hosting a dinner party or dating in the age of Find My Friends, the group is finding that nothing about the real world is simple, and all their best intentions tend to make things worse.'
The show's creators, Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, are former writers on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and referenced Friends as one of the inspirations.
'We grew up on Friends, Seinfeld, Living Single and then Broad City and Girls, all of these friend group comedies,' Shaw told The Sydney Morning Herald. 'It's our favourite genre of television.'
The writing duo are also a couple, as Kronengold added: 'We bonded over it very early in our friendship and relationship. We were fans, but also students of the thing. Even the name, Adults, is kind of an homage to the genre.'
Shaw continued: '[The show is about] that symbiosis of those two parts of young adulthood: the discomfort of wading through something strange, and then knowing your friends will be there for you on the other side of it.'
Disney Plus viewers have already taken to X to praise the show, with @poetsonfilm tweeting: 'Finally started watching adults and it's an instant hit what can i say.'
@Bondos_b) added: 'Finished season 1 of Adults and I loved it. Felt like a modern day Friends. I hope this gets a second season!' They then added: 'Overcompensating was better though,' referring to the similar Gen Z comedy currently streaming on Prime Video.
Fellow viewers were also adamant the show needs a second season, with @leedfrazer writing: 'Still waiting for that Adults season two renewal FX… anytime now…'
@Maxime_pvv chimed in: 'I've just (already) finished all 8 episodes of #AdultsFX, really a fun comedy like we had in the 2010s. I'm hoping for a season 2 because I miss them already!' More Trending
There are also plenty of stellar reviews of the show on IMDb, with @Katie-612 writing: 'I think so many sitcoms are pitched now as being 'like Friends for Gen Z' but it's hard to find a show that actually understands what made Friends so captivating.
'I found Adults to be laugh out loud funny and it truly felt like it was written by people in their 20s who understand what it's like to be entering adulthood in this decade.
'Most importantly, I think it really captured friendships and the kind of odd groups you often find yourself in right out of college. I think this show will really find its footing in the next seasons and we'll begin to feel really attached to the characters. I put it on expecting to just watch a few episodes but I ended up bingeing the whole thing.'
Adults is available to stream on Disney Plus.

Disneyland announces it is shutting down beloved ride as part of wave of changes at the park

Disneyland has revealed it is shutting down one of its beloved rides to make way for a new attraction. The California resort announced last summer that a new Avatar themed ride would be making its way to fans. But now it has emerged that will be at the cost of a beloved fan-favorite attraction; Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue! The ride is set to close at the beginning at 2026 in order to make way for a new era of Disneyland. The current attraction whisks riders through scenes from the Monsters Inc universe as characters Mike and Sulley race through the streets of Monstropolis to rescue Boo. It was launched in 2006, allowing millions of guests to enjoy the 20-year run. Not only is Monstropolis getting a makeover, part of Disneyland California Resort's backlot where the ride is located will be reconstructed to immerse park-goers into the world of Avatar. However, unlike Florida's Disneyworld, this iteration will not be based on the original 'Avatar' film. Instead the area will become a visual recreation of ' Avatar: The Way of Water ' According to Disney Parks Blog and may even feature concepts from upcoming Avatar films. Concept imagery shows the headlining ride taking fans through the sparkling blue lagoons of Pandora. The area will be centered around the water, recreating the landscape of the film and allowing park-goers to feel fully immersed, as if they are Avatars themselves. Disney officials describe the addition as 'dynamic, intense and an emotional experience on a grand scale', the LA Times reports. An opening and construction timeline has yet to be released. But Park-goers who loved the Monsters Inc ride are mourning its closure. 'So disappointing. Why they would make an Avatar land is beyond me. Part of the appeal of DCA is it's better for littler kids. This was one of the anchor rides for that experience. More disappointment,' wrote X user Rami Elghandour. 'They should just give us a Monsters Inc. land instead,' said another user. Park-goers who loved the fan-favorite attraction are mourning its closure 'This sucks! Avatar fits ten times better in Animal Kingdom than DCA… transitioning from Hollywood Land to Avatar? Really? Nope. Down with the idea—would rather have the Muppets back and keep Monsters Inc. alive to preserve kid-friendly rides in the park! There's not enough for little ones to do!' another fan chimed in. '@DisneyParks has no idea how to do the 'theme' in theme parks anymore. Just random stuff everywhere now,' complained another. 'R.I.P. Monsters. I'll forever miss you,' one user simply mourned. The new themed area was announced alongside other exciting additions to the Disneyland landscape, including a new 'Coco' attraction located near Pixar Pier at Disneyland California Adventure. This will mark the first 'Coco' activity in any Disney theme park, Disney Parks Blog writes. 'The attraction will be filled with the characters — and music! — you know and love from the beloved movie, as you join Miguel on a trip to the land of the dead.' Construction will begin in in fall 2026. Disney also plans on adding two new 'Avengers' attractions to Avengers Campus in Disneyland's California Adventure, although creators have yet to release a timeline for their construction. Disney also promised a new parking structure to accommodate demand for their millions of guests, according to Disney Parks Blog. 'This new area will provide approximately 6,000 parking spaces, shuttle and rideshare areas, security screening and dedicated access for traffic off of Disney Way, improving parking and traffic flow throughout the resort area' While this transformation marks an ending for many beloved rides, Disneyland continues to add one new attraction after the other in theme with new films and fan favorites. As Monster's Inc. fans mourn the loss of the classic ride, Avatar fans can get excited about ushering in a brand new era. 'This is just the beginning of exciting growth here at Disneyland Resort, and we look forward to sharing more about all of these projects in the future,' a spokesman said.

Miley Cyrus makes very rare comments about ex Nick Jonas as she shares if they are friends these days

Miley Cyrus revealed where she currently stands with her ex-boyfriend, Nick Jonas, after they dated as teenagers. The Flowers singer, 32, reminisced on the time she briefly dated the Jonas Brothers member, also 32, when they were both Disney stars and opened up about their current relationship. During an appearance on the Every Single Album podcast, Cyrus said that there's no bad blood between them despite their bad breakup, which she went on to describe in detail. 'I like Nick,' she said during Thursday's podcast episode. 'I'm into him.' She also gushed about his marriage to Priyanka Chopra and the couple's three-year-old daughter Malti. Her confession comes just shortly after she seemingly shaded her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth with a snarky, sly move. 'He's married with children. We're all moving on. Everything is good in the world,' she said on the podcast. Then, she jokingly added, 'Niley for life,' as she referenced their past couple name. Nearly two decades ago, Cyrus and Jonas dated from 2006 to 2007 before briefly reconnecting in 2009. The Hannah Montana alum's songs, 7 Things and Before the Storm, are rumored to be about her relationship with him. During her podcast appearance, she opened up about their breakup after they dated on-and-off nearly two decades ago. She admitted that their first split left her 'distraught' and 'sobbing' before explaining why they mutually decided to break up. She said that 'part of the reason we broke up' was because he was going on tour with his band instead of opening for her. 'He was, like, separating himself from the Disney thing, and I wanted him to take me on the tour,' she recalled. 'Like, "Why don't we do it together? I don't understand why you're leaving me."' Cyrus went on to date actor Liam Hemsworth, whom she married in 2018 but divorced after two years; pictured May 2019 in New York City She mentioned how she touched on their past relationship in her 2009 autobiography, Miles To Go, where she referred to Jonas as 'Prince Charming.' She said she wrote about him more positively in the book than she felt at the time when she was heartbroken. Reflecting on her writing that book, she added: 'I probably was like ... "Nick Jonas dumped me. He's a d**k. But they were like, "We can say he's not a very nice boy." But I was probably like, "He's an a**hole.' Then, she joked about how he is 'still catching strays' after so long since their breakup back then. Following their split, Cyrus went on to date country singer Justin Gaston and later actor Liam Hemsworth, whom she married in 2018 but divorced after two years. Since their divorce, Cyrus has been linked to reality star Kaitlynn Carter, singer Cody Simpson and her current boyfriend of four years, Maxx Morando. As for Jonas, he had many A-list romances over the years but went on to marry Chopra in December 2018. The couple welcomed their daughter via surrogate in 2021.

Disneyland set to close popular ride to make way for new attraction

Disneyland is set to close a popular ride to make way for a new Avatar -themed attraction. The resort will be saying farewell to Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! The ride will close in early 2026, Disney announced in a blog post on Thursday. The soon to be shuttered ride is based on Disney and Pixar's hit animated film Monsters, Inc., and has been around since 2005, according to D23, Disney's official fan club. For 20 years, guests have zipped around in a taxi in the fictional city of Monstropolis as they helped monsters Mike and Sulley return little girl Boo to her home. While Disney fans will no doubt be sad to see the ride go, a new adventure awaits with the California resort's Avatar destination. Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D'Amaro revealed the new attraction at Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. The destination is based on the second installment in the Avatar film series, Avatar: The Way of Water. Guests will experience the fictional world of Pandora, an exomoon where the film is set. A Disney blog post from last August said guests 'will go on the adventure of a lifetime in search of majestic natural wonders that can only be found on Pandora and the beauty – and danger – that come along with the journey.' 'This new and thrilling excursion will bring all the action, excitement, and wonder of Avatar, taking guests all the way to the wide-open seas of Pandora.' It's unclear when construction will end for the attraction, as Disney has stated that it's still in the early stages of development. Coco fans will also be pleased to know Disneyland will be creating a new ride based on the 2017 Pixar animated film. The ride will be built near Paradise Gardens Park and Pixar Pier, using space that is predominantly out of guests' view at the moment. The resort said construction will begin this upcoming fall, but has yet to release an opening date.
