The new all-electric Nissan Micra is coming, and although the straight-edged silhouette gives away its Renault 5 underpinnings, the cute round headlights are a throwback to those on the K12 Micra.
So, what better time for Nissan GB to restore its brilliantly bonkers K12-based Micra 350SR. Oh, and it's also this particular Sunderland-built K12's 23rd birthday this year – an important anniversary for Nissan given the Japanese pronunciation of the numbers two (ni) and three (san). Yep, that's also why so many Nissan factory racecars use the number 23.

Anyway, we're getting sidetracked. Once upon a time this 350SR wore a brilliantly 2000s red and silver livery. It's now been updated by the Nissan Design Europe team in Paddington and gets a satin 'liquid silver' base with blue highlights. Apparently the design of those graphics was inspired by the rear lights of the 300ZX. Nice.
The excellent RAYS alloy wheels remain from the 350Z, while new LED headlights provide an even stronger link to the upcoming Micra EV. Inside there's a new 9.0in infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, although Nissan GB reckons you won't be listening to music on the move…
That's because the 350SR had its rear seats removed and a 3.5-litre V6 from a Murano shoved into its cabin. The engine was then fitted with headers from a 350Z, NISMO high-lift cams and induction, plus a modified ECU for around 300bhp.
Perhaps we should have another go in this car just before we review the EV. Purely for research purposes, of course.

Registering a restored or modified car just got easier – here's why
A raft of new changes have been announced for the UK's car registration process which will give drivers greater freedom and autonomy when it comes to registering modifications and repairs to their pride-and-joy. Set to come into effect on 28 August 2025, the DVLA has announced that drivers will no longer have to notify the authorities of any like-for-like repairs or restorations to their car, provided that the end product looks identical to how it did when it left the factory. While drivers historically haven't needed to inform the DVLA of every small change they make – you don't need to update your V5C after adding a spoiler or new set of wheels, for example – UK rules previously stated that drivers must flag any significant repair or replacement work, particularly to a car's frame or bodyshell. Now, however, there's no requirement to do so, provided the damaged parts are swapped for identical ones. Vehicles undergoing significant structural modifications – such as having the monocoque or dimensions altered (i.e. made significantly wider or turning a coupe into a convertible, for example) – will now also be able to retain their original Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and registration. In this instance, however, the DVLA will need to be contacted. Advertisement - Article continues below Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The same goes for electric restomodding – a practice in which the powertrain of a classic car is swapped for one that's fully zero emissions. While the DVLA will continue to require that you notify it of a fuel type change, the vehicle in question will be able to retain its original identity if it changes from a petrol to an electric car. All of the above counts for vehicles of all ages – not just classic cars – with full guidance set to be announced once the rules come into effect. That said, drivers will still be required to notify the DVLA – as well as their insurance provider – of changes to things such as their car's engine displacement, number of seats and colour. Labour Minister for the Future of Roads, Lilian Greenwood said: 'We know how much love, time and effort goes into keeping classic cars – and we're right behind the community.' 'These changes are about cutting red tape and making life easier for enthusiasts, whether you're restoring a vintage gem or converting it to electric,' said Greenwood. 'It's all about celebrating the UK's amazing motoring heritage and helping the industry thrive well into the future." Of course, it's worth mentioning that while this will certainly save classic car restorers and enthusiasts some time and headaches while also preserving historic vehicle identities, the move could also be viewed by cynics as a DVLA cost-cutting measure given that it'll ultimately mean fewer registration alterations to process. Nevertheless, Dale Keller, the CEO of the Historic and Classic Vehicle Association said the DVLA should be 'applauded' for the decision, calling it a 'testament to the hard work of the HCVA, and others, that the government has listened and acted with pragmatic changes that place the retention of historic identity at the forefront of registration policy, a move that will be welcomed by all historic vehicle specialists, owners, and historians.' Hot and heavy: New Nissan X-Trail Nismo preparing to take down Skoda Kodiaq vRS
The Skoda Kodiaq vRS might have a serious fight on its hands. A hot Nismo version of the Nissan X-Trail seven-seater SUV is going to be revealed on the afternoon of August 21. All we know so far is when the car is being unveiled. The only detail we can make out from Nissan's teaser image is that the X-Trail Nismo will feature some vivid red accents. This is a signature element of the brand's souped-up Nismo models, like the Nissan Ariya Nismo, and presumably just one of several styling tweaks. We expect the large (and of course rather heavy) SUV will receive a similar series of upgrades to its Skoda rival, plus the Nissan Patrol Nismo unveiled recently. That means more powerful brakes, revised suspension, tuned steering and potentially a new exhaust system. Advertisement - Article continues below If you're interested in a fast family car that isn't an SUV, the Skoda Octavia vRS Estate is available on our Buy A Car service with prices starting from £41,070 for the new model, or there are used examples at dealers across the country. The regular X-Trial features a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with hybrid assistance, which produces 201bhp at most. That's fine for the weekly shop, and 0-62mph in about seven seconds at a push, but not enough to set hearts racing or trousers ablaze. If the Nismo model doesn't use a more powerful version of that three-pot engine, we're hoping it inherits the twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine from the Patrol Nismo. Partly because it shares elements with the R35-generation Nissan GT-R's motor, which owners could brag about on the school run. Plus it pumps out 495bhp and a whopping 700Nm of torque. In case you're not familiar with the Nismo performance division, it's been making faster, more focused versions of Nissan's sports cars for nearly 40 years. That includes almost every generation of the legendary Nissan GT-R. However, more recently the team have been turning up the wick on the brand's SUVs too, starting with the Juke Nismo in 2013. While the souped-up Nissan Juke was sold in the UK, and the Ariya Nismo landed in showrooms earlier this year, there's been no word on whether the X-Trail Nismo could be storming onto our shores in the near future.
