Trump pushes 'Peace Agreement' to end Russia-Ukraine war

Shafaq News – Washington / Brussels / Kyiv US President Donald Trump described Friday's Alaska talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin as 'very well,' stressing that only a comprehensive 'Peace Agreement' can bring the war in Ukraine to an end. Trump, who had earlier demanded a ceasefire from Putin, wrote Saturday on Truth Social that the decision was made following late-night calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders, stating, 'A mere Ceasefire Agreement, often times do not hold up.' He confirmed plans to host Zelenskyy at the White House on August 18, noting that a follow-up meeting with Putin was under consideration. Meanwhile, European leaders endorsed Trump's push in a joint declaration signed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The officials emphasized that the next phase must involve direct negotiations with Zelenskyy, expressing readiness to support a trilateral summit between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia. They further insisted that any resolution provide 'ironclad security guarantees' for Kyiv, affirming that 'Russia cannot have a veto against Ukraine's pathway to EU and NATO.' Thank you @POTUS for the update on discussions in EU is working closely with @ZelenskyyUA and the United States to reach a just and lasting peace. Strong security guarantees that protect Ukrainian and European vital security interests are essential. — Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen) August 16, 2025 Zelenskyy, for his part, urged Trump to tighten sanctions on Russia if the trilateral meeting does not take place, posting on X, 'If Russia tries to evade an honest end to the war. Sanctions are an effective tool.' Today, following a conversation with President Trump, we further coordinated positions with European leaders. The positions are clear. A real peace must be achieved, one that will be lasting, not just another pause between Russian must stop as soon as… — Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) August 16, 2025

Trump calls Zelenskyy after summit as Russia-Ukraine strikes persist

Shafaq News – Washington / Moscow / Kyiv (Updated at 11:06) US President Donald Trump held an extended call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his flight back from the Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as Russia and Ukraine exchanged fresh overnight strikes. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reported on Saturday that Trump spent much of the six-hour return aboard Air Force One speaking first with Zelenskyy and then with NATO officials, fulfilling his pledge at the joint press conference with Putin. Zelenskyy confirmed the call in a Facebook post, noting that it lasted more than 90 minutes and included Trump's proposal for a trilateral US–Ukraine–Russia meeting. He added that he would meet Trump in Washington on August 18 to discuss 'all details regarding ending the war,' stressing that European participation at every stage is essential for credible security guarantees while affirming Kyiv's ongoing coordination with international partners. The Alaska summit drew sharp criticism in Ukraine, with the Kyiv Independent calling it 'sickening, shameful, and useless' and accusing Trump of 'failing' to enforce his threat of 'severe consequences' for Moscow. Prominent journalist Kristina Berdinskikh charged that Trump gave Putin 'a king's welcome' without securing a ceasefire. Lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak dismissed the meeting as 'another grand American nothingness,' while former MP Mustafa Nayyem branded Trump's handshake with Putin 'a deal with the executioner.' Despite the diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire, hostilities persisted. Russia's Defense Ministry reported intercepting 29 Ukrainian drones across Rostov, Stavropol, Kursk, and the Sea of Azov, while Ukraine's General Staff said Russian forces launched ballistic missiles and 85 Shahed drones toward Sumy, Donetsk, Chernihiv, and Dnipropetrovsk, with air defenses claiming to have downed or disabled 61 by morning.

Alaska summit signals cautious thaw in US–Russia ties

Shafaq News – Anchorage Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump emerged from their high-stakes summit in Alaska on Friday projecting cautious optimism, with Putin urging Kyiv and European powers not to derail the 'emerging progress' toward diplomatic resolution. Speaking at a joint press conference at the military base in Anchorage, Putin struck a measured tone, warning that provocations or 'behind-the-scenes intrigues' could sabotage steps taken toward peace. 'We expect that Kyiv and European capitals will perceive all this in a constructive manner,' he said. The summit — the first between the two leaders since Trump's return to the political stage — focused heavily on the war in Ukraine and broader strategic security. Putin asserted that the conflict stems from unresolved 'fundamental threats to Russian security,' insisting any durable solution must address Moscow's concerns. 'We are interested in ending what's happening in Ukraine,' Putin said, 'but for that to happen, the roots of the conflict must be eliminated. That includes restoring a just balance of security in Europe — and worldwide.' He emphasized, however, that Ukraine's security should also be guaranteed, echoing Trump's remarks earlier in the day. Putin proposed holding the next summit in Moscow — a suggestion he delivered in English. Trump, while acknowledging the idea would be politically contentious, left the door open. 'That's an interesting one,' he said. 'I'll get a little heat on that — but I could see it possibly happening.' Putin described the discussions as 'thorough, useful, and mutually respectful,' thanking Trump for hosting the talks and pointing to geographic proximity as a rationale for meeting in Alaska, 'Although separated by oceans, our countries are in fact close neighbors.' Trump praised the tone of the meeting, calling it 'respectful and fantastic,' and lamented that his earlier efforts to work with Moscow were undermined by the 'Russia hoax' — a reference to the investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election. 'It made it tougher to deal with, but he understood it,' Trump said. Still, the summit ended without any formal agreement or joint communiqué, and the scope of the talks remains largely opaque. Aides to both leaders signaled that discussions touched on nuclear treaties, strategic arms control, and sanctions — though details were sparse.
