Russia and Malaysia to boost nuclear cooperation
Russia and Malaysia have agreed to expand cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, state nuclear corporation Rosatom announced, following high-level talks in Moscow on Friday. The meeting was attended by Rosatom CEO Aleksey Likhachev and Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof.
The discussions focused on the use of Rosatom's Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) technologies, according to a Rosatom press release.
"We value our collaboration and aim for a long-term strategic partnership based on mutual trust and shared objectives," Fadillah, who is also Malaysia's Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, stated at the meeting.
Likhachev said Malaysia is interested in Russian floating nuclear power stations, following Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's visit to Russia last month.
"We offered [Malaysia] the entire spectrum: large and small stations, both land-based and floating. For various reasons, the Malaysians are choosing floating nuclear power plants with a capacity of 100 MW each," he told Izvestia news outlet. "They can be created here in Russia and brought there fully operational."
During their current visit, the Malaysian delegation toured the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant in St. Petersburg, one of Rosatom's largest facilities, to observe Russia's latest nuclear technologies and safety standards. They also visited the ATOM Pavilion at Moscow's VDNKh - the country's key nuclear science education hub, featuring more than 1,700 interactive exhibits.
Fadillah called the experience "eye-opening," praising the pavilion as both a display of innovation and a center of historical awareness.
"This visit reinforced my belief that technology, when guided by knowledge, values and responsibility, can be a powerful driver for a future that is sustainable, innovative and globally competitive," he wrote in a post on social media.
During his 5-day visit, Fadillah also held a bilateral meeting in Moscow with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksey Overchuk.

Fly the flag with courage, Fahmi urges all Malaysians
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil wants all Malaysians to wave the Jalur Gemilang with pride and courage during National Month. 'Be brave when you wave your flag. Do not let any party threaten or intimidate you for putting up the flag,' he told a press conference at an arts and culture empowerment programme in Pantai Dalam here on Sunday (Aug 17). Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi, who launched the programme, urged Malaysians not to just stand by and make an issue viral, but to be present and help sort out the matter. 'Previously, I saw my neighbour's Jalur Gemilang was slanting and was scared it would fall, so I went to help her (raise it) properly,' he said. Fahmi was referring to the recent incident in Penang where the national flag was hoisted upside down outside a hardware store in Kepala Batas, Bertam. 'Let's remember to always understand each other, maintain a harmonious environment, and obey the rules as we approach Merdeka. 'We shouldn't... bully each other on this issue,' he said, adding that Bertam assemblyman Reezal Merican Naina Merican handled the issue properly. The two-day empowerment programme aims to rekindle society's love for traditional arts and culture, especially among the younger generation. A troupe of secondary schoolgirls, silat performers from the Tun Perak Cimandi Silat Arts Association, saw the event as an opportunity to showcase their talents. Participant Vivi Valentina Abdul Muiz Asyraf, 18, said she and her fellow performers, who are from Cheras, were eager to use the platform to develop and promote their association. People's Housing Programme (PPR) residents from various districts attended the event, which also provided business opportunities. A resident from Pantai Ria sold homemade snacks such as pudding, as well as beverages. 'This is how we can make money... we need to look for events like this and work to expand our businesses,' said Rosniza Mat Rashid, 52, a mother of four. Similarly, Rosilawati Ali, 42 civil servant from PPR Lembah Pantai, came to sell cut fruits with her family. 'I wanted to earn a little extra, but more than that, I've always enjoyed running a small business,' she said. Fahmi also distributed Sumbangan Madani aid to 10 families in the form of a cheque and a bag of household items each. One recipient, 63-year-old Nandhini, said that she was happy to receive this financial aid from the government. 'It will help me cut some expenses and buy things for the house," she added.

The current round of negotiations for the proposed bilateral trade agreement is now likely to be deferred to another date that has yet to be decided, the source with direct knowledge of the matter said. The US embassy in New Delhi said it has no additional information on the trade and tariff talks, which are being handled by the United States Trade Representative (USTR). India's trade ministry did not immediately reply to a Reuters email seeking comments. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's continued imports of Russian oil in a move that sharply escalated tensions between the two nations. The new import tax, which will come into effect from Aug 27, will raise duties on some Indian exports to as high as 50% - among the highest levied on any US trading partner. Trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed after five rounds of negotiations over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases.
