HANOI (VNEXpress-Vetam News): Michael Owen, the 2001 Ballon d'Or winner, scored twice as Manchester United Reds (MU Legends) defeated Vietnam All Stars 4-2 in a friendly match in Da Nang on Friday night (June 27).
The match took place at 7pm at Hoa Xuan Stadium and was the highlight of the Vietnam-U.K. Football Festival, which ran from June 26 to 29.
The event featured football legends from Manchester United's golden generation, including Michael Owen, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Teddy Sheringham, Wes Brown, and Dwight Yorke.
In the 7th minute, Owen opened the scoring with a brilliant chip shot over Vietnam goalkeeper Nguyen Van Sy, after receiving a precise pass from a teammate.
Owen completed his double 20 minutes later, converting a penalty after being fouled in the box by Van Sy.
Giggs, wearing the captain's armband, celebrated with Owen after his second goal. The Welsh football legend is known for his long and successful career at Man Utd with 13 Premier League titles. Although Giggs, at 51, did not put on a show in this match, he was pivotal in coordinating the team's play.
Scholes, who also spent his entire career with United, showed his famous passing range and tactical vision, which made him one of the best English midfielders of his time.
Despite being 2-0 down, Vietnam fought back with determination. Striker Nguyen Van Quyet skillfully dribbled past Dwight Yorke but was unable to score.
Van Quyet was the most active player for Vietnam, creating several opportunities. He frequently found himself in front of the Man Utd goal but was stopped by the keeper or missed the target.
Early in the second half, former Vietnam striker Le Huynh Duc dribbled past several defenders and fired a clever shot into the near corner, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
Vietnam's spirit increased after the goal, with midfielder Nguyen Hai Long creating more chances. However, Long missed a one-on-one situation against the goalkeeper.
MU legends responded with two more goals. The crowd erupted in excitement as the away team displayed their class.
Near the end of the match, 2008 AFF Cup champion Nguyen Viet Thang scored for Vietnam, bringing the score to 4-2, which is also the final result.
Last year, Vietnam All Stars played a friendly against Brazil, suffering a heavy 1-7 defeat.
Owen, who left the pitch early in the second half, returned to wear the captain's armband until the end of the match. He spent time interacting with the Vietnam players after the final whistle.
The MU legends also signed balls and jerseys for fans. There were nearly 10,000 spectators who attended the match at Hoa Xuan Stadium, which has a capacity of 20,000. - VNExpress/Vietnam News

Soccer-Guardiola worried that lack of rest after Club World Cup could 'destroy' Man City

Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Manchester City Training - Lynn University, Boca Raton, Florida, U.S. - June 29, 2025 Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola during training REUTERS/Hannah Mckay (Reuters) -Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is concerned about the lack of rest his side will get ahead of the new Premier League season and said their involvement in the Club World Cup could "destroy" them. City wrapped up the previous Premier League season on May 25 and opened their Club World Cup campaign in Philadelphia just over three weeks later on June 18. They face Al-Hilal in Orlando on Saturday in the round of 16 and should City go on to reach the final on July 13 they will have a month to prepare for their new league campaign beginning on August 16. Guardiola said he did not know how much the Club World Cup would take out of his squad and told reporters to ask him about the impact later in the year. "I may say, so listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup destroyed us," he added. "I don't know, but it's the first time in our life that that's happened. So we'll see." Guardiola said he understood comments made by former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who said the expanded 32-team event, to be held once every four years during the pre-season, was football's worst idea. "Juergen, we fought together many, many times... when we went to UEFA meetings especially, or when we discussed the Premier League calendar, about how to add more quality, giving the managers and players more rest," Guardiola said. "So his comments didn't surprise me a lot ... I understand his argument, because I would defend his argument as well." (Reporting by Chiranjit Ojha in Bengaluru; Editing by Peter Rutherford)

Man City's Guardiola 'understands' Klopp Club World Cup critique

ORLANDO, United States: Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said Sunday he can see Jurgen Klopp's point after the former Liverpool coach labelled the Club World Cup "the worst idea ever implemented in football." However the Catalan also said he wants his team to win FIFA's heavily criticised newly expanded competition this summer in the United States, noting many of the complaints have come from teams which did not reach the tournament. Klopp, currently Red Bull's "head of global soccer", told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag the crowded calendar meant there was no time for players to recover mentally or physically and he had serious concern over possible injuries. "Jurgen – we fought together many, many times, I know where the idea comes from, we fought a lot in England, when we went to UEFA meetings, especially on the Premier League, (about) the calendar, to try to (increase the) quality," Guardiola told reporters. "So the players rest, and the managers rest, (then) you have more quality, so it didn't surprise me, I understand him, I respect him. "I have an incredible relationship with Jurgen, when we were rivals... I understand his argument, because his argument I would defend as well." Guardiola's side are in the last 16 of the competition and face Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal on Monday in Orlando. The coach said despite the criticism the tournament has received, he is "proud" to be competing to win it. "At the same time we're in a job, we follow FIFA, UEFA, Premier League, Serie A... the managers are not going to organise the competitions, everyone has their own role, they organise the competitions," continued Guardiola. "I have said many times, I am so proud to be here, because in the end many, many teams complain about the competitions, because they are not here, otherwise they would love maybe to be there. "Their media will be here, their supporters will be here, there will be their income in terms of money to be here, and they will be happy to be there." Man City have won six of the last eight Premier League titles with Liverpool claiming the other two, including last season. England coach Thomas Tuchel said Arne Slot's Reds and Arsenal have an advantage on City for the upcoming campaign because they are resting during the summer. "I try to not think about it, otherwise I will be so anxious," added Guardiola.
