Hyundai Card names sales chief as new CEO

Korea Herald10-07-2025
Hyundai Card, the credit card unit of Hyundai Motor Group, has nominated Cho Chang-hyun, head of card sales operations, as its next CEO.
The company's executive nomination committee selected Cho as the sole candidate on Wednesday, with final approval to be made at an upcoming shareholders meeting. Once confirmed, he will lead the firm alongside Vice Chairman and co-CEO Chung Tae-young.
Cho joined Hyundai Card in 2004 and has since held leadership roles across key divisions including marketing, product planning and sales. He became an executive in 2016 and has overseen a wide range of operations, from the company's two flagship products — General-Purpose Credit Card and Private Label Credit Card — to the finance and corporate business divisions. He currently leads the card sales operations division.
'Cho has demonstrated strong capabilities in managing strategy from planning through execution, and has shown balanced leadership in achieving sales targets while effectively controlling risk,' the company said in a disclosure. 'We believe he is the right person to deliver strong results amid an increasingly competitive financial landscape by identifying future business opportunities, expanding customer touchpoints and enhancing service competitiveness.'
His deep expertise in the PLCC business was a key factor in his nomination, amid growing pressure on the segment. Cho is set to replace current CEO Kim Deok-hwan, who offered to resign before the end of his term in March 2026. Industry reports have linked Kim's early departure to instability in the company's PLCC business.
Hyundai Card has positioned itself as a leading player in the PLCC sector, which not only fosters customer loyalty but also enables the company to build valuable data assets — an area it has increasingly prioritized.
However, the business faces growing uncertainty. Hyundai Card's exclusive six-year PLCC partnership with Starbucks Korea — one of its flagship partners — is set to expire later this year. The coffee chain is reportedly exploring alternative partners, raising the risk of a high-profile loss for the card issuer.
To navigate these challenges, the company is turning to Cho, a seasoned PLCC strategist it credits with having driven the business' advancement. Under his leadership, Hyundai Card expanded its PLCC partner network across nearly 20 sectors and maintained steady growth, reinforcing the firm's broader push into data science collaboration.

Korean auto parts makers to get W630b in financing relief amid US tariffs

Hyundai Motor Group, Hana Bank and the state-run Korea Trade Insurance Corporation have launched a 630 billion won ($453.5 million) financing program to support auto parts makers hit by US tariffs. The three parties held a signing ceremony Monday to back Hyundai Motor Group's domestic suppliers, which face risks of declining sales after the US imposed a 25 percent tariff on car parts in May. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan, Hyundai Motor Company President Sung Kim, KTIC CEO Jang Young-jin and Hana Bank CEO Lee Ho-sung at the headquarters of DY Auto in Asan, South Chungcheong Province. DY Auto, a manufacturer of car window motors, was selected as the first recipient. Based on funds from Hana Bank's contribution of 30 billion won and Hyundai Motor's 10 billion won, KTIC will provide up to 630 billion won in preferential financing to parts makers recommended by Hyundai Motor Group. Participating suppliers will be eligible for loans with interest rates up to 2 percentage points below market rates. KTIC will also extend the guarantee period from the current one year to three years and increase guarantee ceilings for loans under the program. 'In a trade environment that has become more challenging following the recent US tariffs, this new financing program will provide significant support to the auto parts market and, from an original equipment manufacturer perspective, is expected to help stabilize the supply chain,' said Hyundai Motor Company President Sung Kim. Although Korea and the US agreed on July 30 to lower the car parts tariff from 25 percent to 15 percent, the change ended the zero-tariff benefit that Korean parts makers had enjoyed under the Korea–US Free Trade Agreement. As a result, Hyundai Motor Company, which still relies heavily on Korean partners for its US production, said in July that it will consider shifting part of its supply chain to local US suppliers. Currently, Hyundai Motor Company sources less than 50 percent of its parts for US assembly from within the US. The company disclosed that 20 percent of its 828.2-billion-won tariff-related losses in the second quarter stemmed from parts alone. The auto parts industry also faces new risks from a 50 percent US tariff on steel and aluminum starting Monday, which is applied based on the proportion of these metals in the parts. Ahead of the signing ceremony, Minister Kim toured DY Auto and was briefed on the impact of the US tariffs. 'In response to these tariff measures, the government will prepare follow-up support, including easing export difficulties, helping companies enter alternative markets, providing tax incentives, and strengthening self-sufficiency,' Minister Kim said.

Seoul signals openness to US call for higher defense spending

S. Korea to plan phased roadmap for NK's denuclearization, from freeze to dismantlement Seoul's top diplomat said Monday that the Lee Jae Myung administration will leverage "alliance modernization" with the US as an opportunity to bolster South Korea's defense capabilities, signaling openness to raising defense spending in response to Washington's call. The remarks come ahead of President Lee's first in-person meeting with US President Donald Trump, scheduled for Aug. 25 in Washington. The two leaders are expected to discuss security and foreign affairs with a focus on alliance modernization and North Korea's nuclear issue, as well as trade and, in particular, tariffs. Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, speaking at a plenary session of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, underscored that 'alliance modernization should be regarded as an opportunity for us to strengthen our defense capabilities.' 'This comes as we witness changes in the international security landscape, particularly the new forms of warfare brought about by recent technological advances — an area in which we must urgently prepare and respond,' Cho said. 'Therefore, I see it as a chance to do so.' In July, the allies agreed to 'modernize the Alliance in a mutually beneficial manner in the face of an evolving regional security environment' in a joint statement issued after working-level negotiations on the matter. Cho also highlighted the merits of increasing South Korea's defense spending in the broader context of alliance modernization. The Trump administration has urged Seoul to boost its defense outlays beyond the allies' existing cost-sharing framework, formally known as the Special Measures Agreement, for the stationing of US Forces Korea. While Cho acknowledged "mutually different starting points in negotiations" between the allies, he added, "Going forward, we should go through stages of consultations and negotiations, and there are two considerations at present." "The first is that, given the extremely difficult international situation, there is a need for us to raise our defense budget to some extent and strengthen our defense capabilities," Cho told lawmakers. "Secondly, it would be desirable to increase the defense budget if we can take this opportunity to cooperate with the US and make effective use of areas such as (research and development). I also believe this could be of some help to the defense industry." South Korea's 2025 defense budget marks a 3.6 percent increase from last year and accounts for 2.32 percent of gross domestic product, a 63.1 percent rise from a decade ago. On the North Korean issue, Cho said South Korea will lay out a step-by-step roadmap to achieve North Korea's denuclearization. "We will devise a phased denuclearization strategy and implementation plan — progressing from freeze to reduction to dismantlement — while also encouraging the constructive roles of neighboring countries such as China and Russia," Cho said. On the North Korean issue, Cho said South Korea will present a step-by-step roadmap to achieve North Korea's denuclearization. "We will devise a strategy and implementation plan for phased denuclearization, progressing from a freeze to reduction to dismantlement, while also encouraging the constructive roles of neighboring countries such as China and Russia," Cho said. "In the event of progress in dialogue, we intend to concurrently promote inter-Korean dialogue and North Korea-US negotiations, thereby creating conditions in which the denuclearization process and the process of establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula can mutually propel each other forward and advance together." Speaking at the Assembly session, Unification Minister Chung Dong-young, however, admitted that "more time will be needed before inter-Korean dialogue can be restored." Chung underscored the importance of "reestablishing inter-Korean relations on the basis of reconciliation and cooperation, and institutionalizing peaceful coexistence." "Since restoring communication channels with North Korea is the top priority, we will utilize major opportunities to send strategic messages to North Korea, strengthen our capacity for talks, and prepare for the resumption of dialogue," Chung told lawmakers. Lee, for instance, committed to taking measures to substantially ease tensions and restore confidence, while respecting the North Korean regime's system and existing inter-Korean agreements, in his Aug. 15 National Liberation Day speech. "While thoroughly managing the situation, we will gradually restore military trust by reinstating inter-Korean communication lines and restoring the Sept.19 military agreement," Chung said.
