Revoke 5,510 e-buses contract: Min

Hindustan Times27-05-2025

MUMBAI: State transport minister Pratap Sarnaik directed officials of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to cancel the contract for procuring 5510 electric vehicles (EV) on lease from Evey Trans Pvt Ltd, a sister company of Olectra Geentech Ltd, if the company fails to deliver around 1000 EV buses by mid-July, as promised earlier.
Sarnaik said this on Monday in a meeting with MSRTC officials while reviewing the progress of procuring EVs on lease. The minister was irked by the company shifting the deadline for the delivery repeatedly in the past. The company first reneged on its promise to deliver 1000 buses by December 2024, requesting an extension till May 2025 which was further pushed to July 2025. It was also discussed in the meeting that till date MSRTC had received only 240 buses from the company of the 5510 buses.
'Not a single unit of the around 1000 buses have been supplied yet. If they fail in their promise again, cancel the contract for all 5150 buses with the company,' Sarnaik said in the meeting.
Sarnaik also asked MSRTC to convert the existing Shivshahi buses gradually into Hirkani buses – the latter falls in the semi-luxury segment. He said that these buses should be painted in green and white colours, so that passengers can easily identify them.

MSRTC's fleet likely to remain same despite addition of new buses

1 2 Pune: Addition of 2,640 new buses by the year-end will not make much of a difference to MSRTC's fleet as almost an equal number of old buses will be scrapped, transport officials said. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has around 15,663 buses at present. Senior officials of the state transport body told TOI that after procurement of new Lal Pari buses, the capacity of the fleet will be around 16,000. "Many buses will be scrapped as and when new buses arrive. Of these 2,640 buses, we have already received 1,732, which resulted in a slight increase in the size of the fleet. However, scrapping old buses is unavoidable," Abhijit Bhosle, the public relations officer of MSRTC, said. Before the phased arrival of these new buses, the fleet size of MSRTC was around 14,000. MSRTC desperately needs around 22,000 to 23,000 buses to adequately cater to commuters across the state. According to the state's economic survey report 2024-25, the average daily passenger traffic of MSRTC is 58.69 lakh compared to 55.49 lakh in 2023-24. In comparison, the fleet size in 2024-25 stood at 15,560 against 15,760 in 2023-24. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3/4 BHK from ₹ 1.68 Crore*, Bengaluru Birla Estates Learn More Undo "We need to scrap about 1,500 to 2,000 buses. As per MSRTC's regulations, buses that complete 15 lakh km need to be scrapped. Owing to the slow procurement of buses, the policy was revised, and earlier buses that completed 9 years of operational service or operated 9 lakh km were scrapped," an MSRTC official said. Somesh Dixit, a Pune resident who often travels to Mumbai, Ahmednagar, and Solapur for work, said that delay in procurement of buses was very frustrating. "These days, the buses are never on time. Last month, I went to Ahmednagar and the bus that was supposed to leave Swargate at 4 pm arrived at 4:50 pm. I am seriously considering switching to private buses now," he said. Another MSRTC official said that the delay in getting e-buses, totalling 5,150 at present, had affected their operation. "We should have received all the e-buses by now. However, we only have 220 e-buses. In a meeting last week, the transport minister told Trans EV, the company set to supply the buses, to adhere to the new timeline -- 625 buses in 2025, 2,100 buses in 2026, and the rest in 2027. The revised timeline will not be enough to fill the deficit," the official said. A few days ago, the minister had announced that the contract with the company would be terminated. Officials said that the conversion of seven Shivshahi buses into regular buses had been started at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar depot. "These transformed buses will soon be out on the road, and based on their performance, further steps will be initiated," the PRO said. How will the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway transform Maharashtra's real estate markets

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on June 5 inaugurated the final 76-km-long stretch of the Samruddhi Mahamarg, making the entire 701-km Mumbai-Nagpur corridor fully functional. The completion of the corridor has cut travel time between the two cities from around 18 hours to just eight. Real estate experts say the expressway is likely to drive significant growth in property markets across several cities along the route. With the inauguration of the final stretch between Igatpuri in Nashik district to Amane in Bhiwandi taluka of Thane district, this six-lane expressway, officially called 'Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg', is likely to be open for traffic soon, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRDC) said. Besides Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra ministers Dada Bhuse, Shivendraraje Bhosale and Narhari Zirwal attended the inauguration ceremony at Igatpuri, about 140 km from Mumbai. According to infrastructure experts, the expressway will enhance connectivity between Mumbai, Aurangabad, and Nagpur, significantly cutting travel time and boosting the corridor's industrial, logistics, and tourism activity. 'This is expected to have a major positive economic bearing on the state, driving businesses across industrial and logistics, tourism, greenfield developments (newer cities/towns), alongside urbanisation and thus real estate," said Vimal Nadar, National Director and Head, Research, Colliers India. "This will also connect with the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, boosting domestic and international trade,' Nadar said. Gulam Zia, senior executive director of Knight Frank India, notes that the final leg of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway is expected to improve travel between Mumbai and Nagpur and boost tourism in temple towns like Shirdi. 'While this development is unlikely to significantly influence the residential real estate market, it is expected to benefit the hospitality and tourism sectors,' Zia said. The new segment bypasses the congested and hilly Kasara Ghat, reducing travel between Amane and Igatpuri from 90 to 40 minutes. Built at a cost of ₹1,182 crore under the Hybrid Annuity Model, the six-lane (expandable to eight) access-controlled expressway is designed for safer and faster travel. The Maharashtra government has identified 24 development nodes for agri-processing, industrial estates, tourism, and skill hubs. Logistics and warehousing clusters are planned in key cities like Nashik, Aurangabad, and Bhiwandi to boost job creation and investment, particularly in underdeveloped districts such as Wardha, Washim, and Jalna, said experts. Nagpur, a major industrial city, is gaining attention due to its central location and connectivity via five expressways, including Samruddhi. It is home to major industrial zones like Butibori and Hingna, and the Multi-Modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN SEZ) is the flagship project of Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited (MADC), a report by Colliers said. Since the expressway's opening in 2022- 23, land prices near Samruddhi Circle have surged 3.7x (2015–2024), with projections of a 5.2x rise by 2035. The Colliers report noted that current land prices for plotted developments range from ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 per sq ft. The report noted other upcoming developments in the area, including Metro Phase 2 (Khapri to Butibori MIDC and Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna), expected by 2026–27, and the Nagpur Airport Expansion, including a terminal for 4 million passengers by 2030–35. MSRTC employees to receive 7% hike in dearness allowance from June

MUMBAI: In a significant relief to Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) employees, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday announced a 7% hike in Dearness Allowance (DA), raising it from 46% to 53%. The revised DA will come into effect from June 2025 and is expected to benefit nearly 87,000 employees of the state-run transport undertaking. Dearness Allowance is a cost-of-living adjustment paid to government employees and pensioners to help offset inflation. It is calculated as a percentage of the basic salary and revised periodically based on changes in the Consumer Price Index. The announcement came after a high-level meeting chaired by Shinde and newly appointed Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the state transport department, MSRTC, and representatives of ST employees' unions. Key issues discussed included the long-pending DA revision and medical insurance schemes for employees. 'From June 2025, ST employees will receive 53% DA. They will also have the option to choose between the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana or the Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Medical Reimbursement Scheme for healthcare. Additionally, each employee will be covered under a ₹1 crore accident insurance policy,' Shinde said after the meeting. Further sweetening the deal for MSRTC staff, Shinde announced that retired employees and their spouses would now be entitled to free travel passes for 12 months, up from the current nine. This move is expected to benefit around 35,000 retired personnel. The deputy CM also directed MSRTC to explore launching cargo services by converting bus depots into logistics hubs, in a bid to enhance revenue generation for the loss-making corporation. With this DA hike and extended benefits, the state government hopes to boost morale among MSRTC staff, who have in recent years staged several protests demanding better wages and working conditions.
