Newport News residents furious over rash of car break-ins
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — It has been a frustrating situation for residents at one apartment complex on the Peninsula, as residents at The Villages of Stoney Run said about 20 cars had their windows smashed in — and it's not the first time they've seen trouble like this.
One resident, Antonio Knox, just bought this Dodge Charger not long ago. Now he's getting the window replaced.'A bunch of delinquents had ransacked our cars and entered our cars unlawfully,' Knox said.Last year, his Hyundai was stolen from the same parking lot — a lot he said needs more security.'To get better lighting, to get more cameras surrounding the area, fence in the surrounding area,' Knox said.William Beagle, who just moved to the complex, was also hit. 'It's going to cost us, like, at least over $500 because our deductible was too high,' Beagle said.Beagle said he and others went to the front office to talk to the property manager after it happened Saturday morning.'Nothing she could really do,' Beagle said. 'Upper management was definitely avoiding us. Apparently, they've run dry of funds, so they can't give any reimbursement to any residents.'Beagle said nothing was taken from his car, and he thinks the suspects were looking for cash or guns. Now, both Knox and Beagle say they're looking to get out.'It would be nice to get out of my lease, but personally, I mean, we're just going to try to stick it out for the next 11 months,' Beagle said. 'We've taken steps to have more protection for ourselves. After that, we'll be moving to a house in the country.'
10 On Your Side reached out to the Breeden Company about the incident and if there were any plans to add security. They responded with a statement saying:
'The Breeden Company, who manages The Villages at Stony Run Apartments, is addressing the recent vehicle break-ins in our community. We are assisting the Newport News Police Department with their investigation. The wellbeing of our community remains our highest priority.'

Police make another firearm-related arrest at Naperville Topgolf lot, total up to 12 for the year
Police apprehended another person on a firearm-related charge at Naperville Topgolf this weekend, putting the tally for the year at 12. Yezreel Salter, 26, of Lynwood, was taken into custody Friday night on one count each of felony aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, transportation or possession of open alcohol by a driver and possession of 10 grams or less of cannabis. Officers were performing a proactive foot patrol of the Topgolf parking lot at 3211 Odyssey Court when they observed suspected drugs, open alcohol and a handgun in plain view inside a parked, unoccupied Dodge Charger, according to Naperville police spokeswoman Kelley Munch. An inquiry into the registered owner of the car, determined to be Salter, indicated he did not possess a valid Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card, Munch said. Officers watched for the vehicle's occupants to return, made contact with Salter as the driver and recovered an open bottle of tequila, cannabis and a loaded handgun, Munch said. Salter's next court appearance is scheduled for June 23, according to DuPage County court records. With his arrest, there have now been a dozen gun-related arrests in or near the facility's parking lot this year, Munch confirmed. Most recently, police arrested Delfino Andrade Jr., 32, of Chicago, on May 24 outside the business on felony charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance. In April alone, police made five such arrests in the facility's lot. Topgolf arrests this year started up again in early February after a nearly four-month break. Gun-related arrests outside the business have been making headlines for nearly two years. Ahead of this year, Naperville police made 25 arrests on gun-related offenses outside Topgolf between August 2023 and October 2024. tkenny@

Kidnapping or fight? 911 call sparks high-speed chase in Issaquah
The Issaquah Police Department says a possible kidnapping spurred a high-speed chase over the weekend. On Saturday, officers were called to Southeast Clark Street after someone saw the driver of a silver Dodge Charger grab a child and pull them into their car. The caller told 911 that the child was screaming, 'help me,' and 'I don't want to go with you.' The 911 caller got the license plate, and officers rushed to the area to see what was going on. A recent police academy graduate and her Field Training Officer spotted the car turning from Newport Way Northwest uphill onto Mountain Park Boulevard Southwest and started chasing it. Other officers set up spike strips to try and stop the speeding car, but the department says the driver dodged them. Officers eventually stopped chasing the car because they worried that it posed a safety risk to others in the area. 'At this point, the reasonable suspicion officers had initially has not developed into probable cause of a crime. This may have been as simple as a dispute — we just don't know yet,' the department said online. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Issaquah Police Department at (425) 837-3200.
