More than 300 suspects arrested in Tshwane crime crackdown

A total of 343 suspects were arrested in Tshwane during a weekend crackdown on crime, targeting the rural areas of Cullinan and Boschkop policing precincts.
The operation, led by Tshwane's District Commissioner, Major-General Samuel Thine, brought together a coalition of law enforcement agencies, including SAPS, Department of Home Affairs, Tshwane Metro Police, Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and local Community Policing Forum representatives.
SAPS district spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk stated that the operation was launched on Saturday as part of ongoing efforts under Operation Shanela to disrupt and combat crime in Tshwane.
'This combined effort resulted in the arrest of 343 suspects for various criminal offences. These results are a direct outcome of planning, strategic deployments and heightened visibility aimed at reducing crime and continued track and tracing of wanted suspects,' he said.

Detectives were responsible for 274 arrests, including 82 suspects for gender-based violence-related offences, one for murder, six for attempted murder, eight for armed robbery, 26 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and 10 for rape.
Van Dyk said a roadblock set up in Cullinan and Boschkop led to the detention of 22 undocumented foreign nationals, who are currently being processed by immigration authorities.
During the operation, 906 individuals and 450 vehicles were searched, and 13 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Targeted patrols were conducted at 18 identified crime hotspots, resulting in additional arrests and fines, including 20 people for public drinking and eight people for public intoxication. Traffic enforcement units issued 16 AARTO infringement notices, totaling R7,250 in fines.
Liquor compliance inspections were conducted at 15 establishments, resulting in the closure of four for non-compliance. Authorities confiscated 724 145ml of alcohol and two music sound systems.
Thine expressed gratitude to all participating stakeholders for their continued cooperation, and commitment to enhancing community safety.
He also encouraged the public to report suspicious activities to SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or via the My SAPS App.
Meanwhile, MMC for Community Safety, Hannes Coetzee, welcomed the handover of 11 new motorcycles to the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), aimed at enhancing their response capacity.
According to him, the handover would improve the effectiveness, mobility, and visibility of law enforcement across the metro.
'The motorcycles will be deployed as part of a broader effort to strengthen front-line safety operations, particularly in high-risk and high-traffic areas where rapid response and agile patrols are essential. Their introduction comes at a time when residents are calling for more responsive, more present and better equipped safety personnel,' he said.
Coetzee said the new motorcycles will allow TMPD officers to better navigate congested urban areas, support targeted operations, and maintain a visible presence in high-need areas, including main roads and informal settlements, as well as during coordinated safety initiatives. rapula.moatshe@inl.co.za

Businessman claiming Gaza roots deported from South Africa for fraud
A businessman claiming Palestinian roots has left the country after failing to force the Department of Home Affairs to allow him to legalise his status in South Africa. Image: File A businessman claiming to have Gaza, Palestine roots has left South Africa after failing to stop the Department of Home Affairs' bid to deport him after finding he had been using a fraudulent name. Manar Alnajjar or 'Frederik van Wyk' had been detained at the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Mogale City after being arrested in January this year at OR Tambo International Airport on his return from a business trip in Dubai. He was charged with possession of a fraudulent South African identity document and passport. Alnajjar appeared before the Nigel Magistrate's Court and pleaded guilty to contravening the Immigration Act and fraud in April and sentenced to three months direct imprisonment for fraud and R120,000 for being in the country illegally. The court suspended R100,000 of the amount for three years on condition that he is not found guilty of a similar offence. After completing his sentence, Alnajjar was transferred to the Lindela Repatriation Centre for deportation. In his defence, he claimed he first entered the country in 2007 using a visitor's visa and subsequently obtained a general work visa in February 2011. Alnajjar stated that he aspired to be a permanent South Africa citizen and engaged the services of an immigration agent. Afterwards, they visited the offices of the Home Affairs in Nigel, which then furnished him with the South African ID containing his photograph and under the name 'Frederik van Wyk'. It was during his stay at the Lindela Repatriation Centre in July that Alnajjar launched an urgent application to the Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg to force Home Affairs director-general Livhuwani Makhode, minister Dr. Leon Schreiber and the head of the centre to release him to legalise his status in the country. Alnajjar told the court that he previously held a Jordanian passport and that his family is originally from Gaza but after the 1967 Six-Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbours, his family along with others were forced to relocate to Jordan. During his time in South Africa, he knowingly used the fraudulent document and used it to apply for a passport. Alnajjar added that he had a life partner who is a Ukrainian citizen, also a permanent resident and holder of a permanent South African non-citizen document, and together they had a daughter, who is 11 months old. In 2013, he married a Bulgarian citizen but divorced her in 2022. He also insisted that he is a successful businessman and a shareholder of a company operating in the recycling space in and outside South Africa and that he employed about ten people. Alnajjar said the company had been steadily expanding until he was arrested earlier this year. However, Acting Judge Patrick Malungana said the court could not countenance the perpetuation of illegal activities despite showing remorse by pleading guilty for fraud after he was arrested in possession of those fraudulent documents. 'The applicant (Alnajjar) has known all along of his fraudulent identity document. It is only when the law caught up with him that he pleaded guilty, and has some sort of expectation for the law to prevent his deportation because he has some family and business interests in the country,' the acting judge said, explaining his decision to dismiss the urgent application last week.

Motorist rescues young girl from brutal assault on R555
A desperate appeal for police back-up was made on the Traffic Alert WhatsApp group at noon today by Wayne Julyan after a girl tried to escape from a vehicle on the R555 between Middelburg and eMalahleni. According to Julyan, the incident occurred shortly before 13:00 at the weighbridge just outside Middelburg. The teenager, estimated by Julyan to be between 15 and 16 years old, leapt from the car at the four-way stop, and the two men in the vehicle chased after her. By chance, a police constable drove past and was flagged down by Julyan to intervene. According to Julyan, the two men told the constable that the teenager was mentally challenged, and they were taking her back to eMalahleni, where her mother lives. One of the men claimed to be her father. During this time, the girl locked eyes with Julyan and begged him for help. According to Julyan, the constable accepted the men's story and sent them on their way. Julyan, however, was deeply unsettled and followed the vehicle. 'About 3km to 5km later, the teenager tried to jump out of the moving vehicle, and the man next to her started beating her with his fists. I could see from behind them how there was a constant tugging, pulling and beating all the way to eMalahleni.' Julyan reported the incident on the Traffic Alert group, and David Ross from Ross Towing asked him for a live location so that he could send help. Ross and two other tow truck drivers managed to stop the vehicle, and the SAPS were called. According to Julyan, the young lady was taken to the hospital and the men were apprehended for questioning. 'I don't know if the men have been charged, but the case now lies with the police.' When told that the young lady likely had him to thank for her life, his humble reply was that he was just in the right place at the right time.
