Greenock youngsters dream of league and cup double after dramatic shoot-out win
GREENOCK Juniors' 2008 squad are out to complete a league and cup double this weekend – after advancing to the final of their Divisional Cup tournament in dramatic fashion.
While most of the weekend's penalty shoot-out headlines were being made by Aberdeen at Hampden, Jimmy Thelin's squad weren't the only team to enjoy a nail-biting sudden death victory, with the Nock 2008s withstanding a dramatic comeback from their opponents, OLA Union, to triumph from the spot.
Jay Beckley's hat-trick opened up a 3-0 lead for the Nock youngsters at half-time – but if any of the Greenock players or coaches felt that it was 'job done' with 45 minutes still to play, they were given a rude awakening after the break.
Jay Beckley scored a first-half hat-trick before being sent off after the interva;. (Image: Social media) First, Beckley blotted his copybook when he was shown a red card by referee William Johnstone, and with a man advantage, OLA roared back into contention, reducing the leeway to two goals and then to one before levelling at 3-3 with the last kick of the ball.
Thankfully for those involved from a Greenock perspective, the Nock's players managed to recover their poise for the resulting shoot-out, running out 4-1 winners, with William Hudson, Dylan Andrew, Kyle Dorrian and Braiden Millerall on target from the spot.
Goalkeeper Jack Hardie, who had made some crucial saves during the 90 minutes, produced two excellent stops during the shoot-out to pave the way for the Nock to advance.
Man of the Match was Ruaridh Davidson who was outstanding from start to finish.

The team can now look forward to the final this Sunday at the King George V facility in Renfrew against Drumchapel United. Kick off is at 10am.
The team have already won their league and it is a great opportunity to add a further trophy and make an impressive season even more special.
The boys have a scheduled league match on Tuesday night, also against Drumchapel, which will allow the free-scoring Beckley to serve his suspension and ensure he is eligible for the final.

(Image: Unsplash.com) Meanwhile, Greenock's 2009 squad narrowly failed in their bid to follow in the footsteps of their older clubmates when they lost 2-1 away to Knightswood in the semi-final of their divisional cup.
Tyler Boyland scored the Nock's goal and was also man of the match. Despite the disappointment of losing in the semi-final the group can look back on a very satisfactory first season.
They went through a difficult period in early autumn, but have developed very impressively since then; finishing a very creditable sixth in Division One of the PJDYFL, as well as reaching Saturday's semi-final and bringing on a very talented group of players.
The 2009s can now look forward to a well-earned summer break, though it won't be long before they're raring to go in 2025-26.

Glenpark Harrier puts name in history books with powerful performance
Simon Okiti was flying the flag for Inverclyde yet again (Image: Supplied) A GREENOCK athlete wrote their name in the history books in a powerful performance last weekend. Glenpark Harriers' Simon Okiti bounced back to form at the weekend with a season's best and national standard performance. Advertisement The Glenpark Harrier has impressed on the big stage (Image: Supplied) Simon travelled to Eton back on the hunt for medals following a stunning hat-trick back in April. He made the trip to contest the UK Athletic League Premier Division for Glasgow Jaguars. Competing in the Premier Division means that Simon is taking on the fastest athletes from across the UK. Heading into the weekend, he was keen to test a new race plan in the 100 metres. After a steady start, he was soon into his running, working through the phases before crossing the line in a season-best finish. His performance did not go unnoticed and his learnings were put to good use as he was selected to anchor the 4x100 metre relay squad later in the day. Advertisement Joining Glasgow's fastest quartet, Simon exploded into action as the baton got to him with 100m to go. Okiti was soon at top speed, mixing it with some of the UK's top sprinters. Undeterred by the company he was rubbing shoulders with, he powered the team home, stopping the clock in a time that took them to the top of the Scottish rankings and the third fastest relay time in history. Simon's season now progresses toward Grangemouth, Cardiff and Derby in the coming weeks.

105 years ago: The busy days at James Watt docks a century ago (1920)
ANOTHER consignment of teakwood for Greenock has been brought by the Henderson liner Martaban, which which arrived from Liverpool last night. Her cargo was loaded at Rangoon, and she has put out part of it at the Mersey. The Martaban is a vessel of 3,828 tons and went into the James Watt Dock last night. The Janeta, which also brought a cargo of timber for Greenock this week, is waiting at the Tail-of-the-Bank for a berth; and will probably dock tomorrow. James Watt Dock in 1920 (Image: Archive) One of the Shaw, Savile, & Albion Bine vessels, the Matatua, 5,210 tons net, a hand-some-looking craft, came in last evening, and lay at the anchorage overnight, proceeding up the river this morning. She is from Liverpool, and has gone to Glasgow to complete general cargo for New Zealand. Two vessels passed Greenock last night on their way to Glasgow. One, the Pinewin, had a cargo of timber from Bathurst, and the other, the Credo, was from Liverpool, in light trim. One of the recently-built steamers from this district, the Saphir, launched by the Clyde Shipbuilding and Engineering Coy. for Norwegian owners, left the Tail-of-the-Bank last evening on her maiden voyage, which is to Newport News. Two steamers which had unloaded heavy cargoes of cane sugar at Greenock, the Dorie and the Raithwaite, shifted from their berths today. The former has sailed for Hampton Roads, and the latter has left the Albert Harbour for the James Watt Dock, where she will load bunker coal. Among large liners which passed Greenock to day outward bound were the Holt Line steamer Aeneas for Australia ports, and the Federal liner Leitrim for New Zealand. The Baron Polworth left on a Clan Line charter for Calcutta. This Story was first published in the Greenock Telegraph on May 29, 1920.
