Greenock youngsters dream of league and cup double after dramatic shoot-out win
GREENOCK Juniors' 2008 squad are out to complete a league and cup double this weekend – after advancing to the final of their Divisional Cup tournament in dramatic fashion. While most of the weekend's penalty shoot-out headlines were being made by Aberdeen at Hampden, Jimmy Thelin's squad weren't the only team to enjoy a nail-biting sudden death victory, with the Nock 2008s withstanding a dramatic comeback from their opponents, OLA Union, to triumph from the spot. Jay Beckley's hat-trick opened up a 3-0 lead for the Nock youngsters at half-time – but if any of the Greenock players or coaches felt that it was 'job done' with 45 minutes still to play, they were given a rude awakening after the break. Jay Beckley scored a first-half hat-trick before being sent off after the interva;. (Image: Social media) First, Beckley blotted his copybook when he was shown a red card by referee William Johnstone, and with a man advantage, OLA roared back into contention, reducing the leeway to two goals and then to one before levelling at 3-3 with the last kick of the ball. Thankfully for those involved from a Greenock perspective, the Nock's players managed to recover their poise for the resulting shoot-out, running out 4-1 winners, with William Hudson, Dylan Andrew, Kyle Dorrian and Braiden Millerall on target from the spot. Goalkeeper Jack Hardie, who had made some crucial saves during the 90 minutes, produced two excellent stops during the shoot-out to pave the way for the Nock to advance. Man of the Match was Ruaridh Davidson who was outstanding from start to finish. READ MORE: Greenock 2008s secure league title in style with spectacular 9-1 win The team can now look forward to the final this Sunday at the King George V facility in Renfrew against Drumchapel United. Kick off is at 10am. The team have already won their league and it is a great opportunity to add a further trophy and make an impressive season even more special. The boys have a scheduled league match on Tuesday night, also against Drumchapel, which will allow the free-scoring Beckley to serve his suspension and ensure he is eligible for the final. Greenock's 2008 squad reached their divisional cup final - but their 2009 counterparts just missed out. (Image: Meanwhile, Greenock's 2009 squad narrowly failed in their bid to follow in the footsteps of their older clubmates when they lost 2-1 away to Knightswood in the semi-final of their divisional cup. Tyler Boyland scored the Nock's goal and was also man of the match. Despite the disappointment of losing in the semi-final the group can look back on a very satisfactory first season. They went through a difficult period in early autumn, but have developed very impressively since then; finishing a very creditable sixth in Division One of the PJDYFL, as well as reaching Saturday's semi-final and bringing on a very talented group of players. The 2009s can now look forward to a well-earned summer break, though it won't be long before they're raring to go in 2025-26.

Greenock Juniors boss demands one last push as promotion battle goes to the wire
GARY FLEMING has urged his Greenock Juniors side to give it one last push to drag themselves over the line and seal promotion to the Second Division. Come full-time on Saturday, Greenock will either be celebrating promotion success or bemoaning a very near miss in a dramatic West of Scotland season finale. There are a lot of ifs, buts and maybes, but essentially the scenario is this. Firstly, and most importantly, Nock must win against Lugar Boswell on Saturday to stand any chance of gaining promotion. Fleming says it's all built up to this moment (Image: alex craig) They then need a favour either Kilsyth Athletic or Threave Rovers slip up in their final matches. Kilsyth, who are on an eight-game winning streak, will likely require only a draw on Saturday against Glasgow Perthshire to confirm their promotion. However a draw will not suffice if Greenock can don their shooting boots and win by eight goals or more, overturning Kilsyth's current goal difference advantage. Threave, who have made light of their fixture congestion with wins on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday, must win at home against the already relegated Vale of Leven to secure promotion. A draw or loss for the Castle Douglas club would open the door for Greenock. As it stands Nock are in fourth place, two points behind second placed Kilsyth and one behind Threave, who won away to Glasgow United on Monday evening and followed that up with victory on the road against another already-relegated side, Irvine Vics, just 48 hours later - with the latter result pushing Greenock out of the automatic promotion places. And Fleming insists his side have been working towards this moment since they reported for pre-season last June. He told the Tele: 'Saturday's game is the culmination of our season's efforts. With promotion on the line this is the moment we've been working towards since pre-season. "We need one final push for three points. Our performances recently have been excellent and the atmosphere in the camp is relaxed." Nock will need to have their shooting boots on (Image: Alex Craig) Greenock faced off against Lugar two weeks ago, and came away with all three points. After a difficult first hour, Nock found the quality required to record 3-1 win against difficult opponents, who appointed former Irvine Vics boss Stuart MacDuff as their new manager this week. Ideally they will want that quality to be on display from kick off as was the case last Saturday against Finnart. That performance brought home the fact that when Nock achieve the right balance between the intensity levels and the technical quality in the squad, they are as good as any team in this league - and an enjoyable watch as well. And Fleming wants his side to give it one last push to try and get his side over the line and out of the Third Division. "We need one last top performance and we'll see where we stand at the final whistle," he said. "But we can't underestimate Lugar. They have a striker who has netted over 20 goals this season and their team will get a boost from their new manager. "We need to be ready to meet and face this challenge head on." The squad will still missing Dec McCormick who is struggling to shake off a back problem and Ross Canavan who is still nursing an ankle ligaments injury. Ryan Corr, who had to be substituted on Saturday towards the end of the first half, should be fine for Saturday's squad. Kick-off at Ravenscraig is at 2pm. Greenock are sponsored by Saveheat, Keystore Cowal View, Safer Group, The Lighthouse Bar, McGills, ARC and Blairs.

Fake Bondi Vet posed staged elaborate AI romance hoax
Don't miss out on the headlines from News. Followed categories will be added to My News. A British woman has been defrauded out of $22,800 by scammers who posed as Bondi Vet Chris Brown using AI-generated photos and emotionally manipulative messages in a catfish scam that has left her financially ruined. Sophisticated scammers bombarded Lisa Nock with messages tricking her into believing she was in a romantic relationship with the internationally famous vet and to hand over her life savings. The con artist, who appeared to make initial contact through a page that posed as Brown's official Instagram account, soon told her his account had been hacked and he needed help to fund a meet and greet with her in England. Ms Nock, 44, who shares Brown's love of animals, insists she's no 'fool', but was tricked into believing she was talking to her idol and has been left with psychological distress and in financial ruin from the two-and-a-half year romance hoax. The voluntary English and drama teacher claims disability benefit after injuries from a car crash left her unable to work. 'At first I asked if he had been hacked and the person replying said 'no' that he knew I was a fan and loved animals,' Ms Nock, from Huddersfield, said. 'I was chuffed that Chris Brown had messaged me, I'm a huge fan and hoped this might be our chance to meet. 'He soon suggested we speak on WhatsApp. 'After a few months I admit I was enamoured. He told me he loved me and wanted us to marry – of course I said no and asked if it was a scam. I called the number to verify but it did not allow incoming calls. 'Then I got a video call with him from another number on encrypted phone messaging platform Telegram where he said 'I hope this now clears your doubts.'' Contact began when the impostor suggested a meet and greet in England costing $4000 in 2022. She was asked for monthly payments of $400 over two-and-a-half years through bitcoin, team cards and crypto information. Ms Nock receives $1246 a month in pensions, of which $831 pays rent to her parents and the remaining $400 she paid to the scammers. She later received a message allegedly from his 'management' saying he had been kidnapped in Australia and needed $40 million. 'I said I didn't have that kind of cash. I cut contact,' she said. The impostor persisted through AI-generated images and video calls that showed the veterinarian filming in Africa and in TV studios as 'proof'. 'I was vulnerable and wanted to believe we could be friends, we both love animals, I had lost my partner in a car crash a few years ago,' she said. Ms Nock has filed a criminal complaint against the scammer with UK police. 'I want Chris to know people operating as him are scamming people,' she said. 'I'm paying off a big credit card debt and suffer from depression. I'm no fool, I just fell for the cleverness of AI.' Chris Brown has been contacted for comment.
