Trump's Japan trade deal doesn't even help US car companies

President Donald Trump's latest trade deal with Japan serves to demonstrate how little administration officials actually understands what they are doing in the trade policy arena. Tariffs are bad policy - and Trump's tariffs are being implemented in the most chaotic manner possible.

Proponents of tariffs love to claim that their policies will incentivize domestic production, but the reality is that they add additional burdens to domestic producers. The Japanese trade agreement spans many sectors, but this idea can be seen clearly in the automotive industry.
American car manufacturers are charged tariffs of 25% on imported parts and 50% on imported aluminum and steel. The costs of tariffs on importing components and raw materials essential to vehicles only serve to drive up production costs for those companies doing what Trump wants, building in America.

These tariffs have already collectively cost domestic producers billions of dollars.
Ford alone lost $800 million to tariffs in the second quarter and expects to lose $2 billion this year. Ford has rather admirably taken on a great portion of the costs of these tariffs themselves rather than raising prices, but because of that, tariff policies have resulted in Ford's first quarterly loss in two years.
That isn't sustainable.

Not only are these tariffs costing domestic producers money, but they are also disadvantaging them against foreign competition. Japanese car companies face a tariff of just 15%, thereby further incentivizing the import of Japanese cars over domestic production. This rate is also notably lower than the 25% rate on vehicles coming from Mexico and Canada, both of which produce vehicles for American car companies.
There's an even greater irony in that fact because Japanese manufacturers, such as Toyota, have announced expansions to their already existing U.S.-based manufacturing plants. It turns out that continuing production in Japan will be better.

The backward effects that tariffs are having on domestic car production are a perfect example of how dysfunctional this administration's policy is on the issue. Even the tariffs that are put into effect don't achieve what they purport to.

In the case of cars, they are doing the opposite, giving manufacturers from a foreign nation an artificial leg up over American ones.
In this case, the disparity is a result of negotiated deals taking place at different times. Trump is rewarding Japan by coming around to make a deal before both Mexico and Canada.
Another area of concern is the sudden and unexpected shock of tariffs, often with little advance notice to the impacted industries. Tariffs don't make sense, but they make even less sense when there is no phase in the window in which companies can change their manufacturing practices to avoid them.
Nor can any company be faulted for not rapidly changing any of their practices, given the fact that Trump's tariff policies have changed by the week, or sometimes even by the day. The volatile nature of these policies has made it impossible for any affected parties to make reasonable decisions going forward.
This administration's dysfunctional approach to tariffs has resulted in a headache for everyone involved. While everyone suffers, domestic producers end up getting the short end of the stick. None of this is good.

Rwanda on Tuesday became the third African nation to agree to accept deportees from the United States under the Trump administration's plans to send migrants to countries they have no ties with to get them off American soil. Rwandan government spokeswoman Yolande Makolo told The Associated Press in a statement that the East African country would accept up to 250 deportees from the US, with 'the ability to approve each individual proposed for resettlement' under the agreement. Advertisement Ms Makolo did not provide a timeline for any deportees to arrive in Rwanda or say if they would arrive at once or in several batches. She said details were still being worked out. The US sent 13 men it described as dangerous criminals who were in the US illegally to South Sudan and Eswatini in Africa last month and has said it is seeking more agreements with African nations. It said those deportees' home countries refused to take them back. The US has also deported hundreds of Venezuelans and others to Costa Rica, El Salvador and Panama under President Donald Trump's plans to expel people who he says entered the US illegally and are 'the worst of the worst'. Rwanda attracted international attention and some outrage when it struck a deal in 2022 with the UK to accept migrants who had arrived in the UK to seek asylum. Advertisement Under that proposed deal, their claims would have been processed in Rwanda and, if successful, they would have stayed there. The contentious agreement was criticised by rights groups and others as being unethical and unworkable and was ultimately scrapped when Britain's new Labour government took over. Britain's Supreme Court ruled in 2023 that the deal was unlawful because Rwanda was not a safe third country for migrants. The Trump administration has come under scrutiny for the African countries it has entered into secretive deals with to take deportees. It sent eight men from South Sudan, Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Myanmar and Vietnam to South Sudan in early July after a US Supreme Court ruling cleared the way for their deportations. Advertisement They were held for weeks in a converted shipping container at an American military base in Djibouti as the legal battle over their deportations played out. South Sudan, which is tipping towards civil war, has declined to say where the men are being held or what their fate is. The US also deported five men who are citizens of Vietnam, Jamaica, Cuba, Yemen and Laos to the southern African kingdom of Eswatini, where the government said they will be held in solitary confinement in prison for an undetermined period of time. A human rights lawyer in Eswatini said the men are being denied access to legal representation there and has taken authorities to court. Eswatini is Africa's last absolute monarchy. The king rules over government and political parties are effectively banned. Advertisement Both South Sudan and Eswatini have declined to give details of their agreements with the US. Rwanda, a country of some 15 million people, has long stood out on the continent for its recovery from a genocide that killed more than 800,000 people in 1994. It has promoted itself under long-time President Paul Kagame as an example of stability and development, but human rights groups allege there are also deadly crackdowns on any perceived dissent against Mr Kagame, who has been president for 25 years. Government spokesperson Ms Makolo said the agreement with the US was Rwanda doing its part to help with international migration issues because 'our societal values are founded on reintegration and rehabilitation'. 'Those approved (for resettlement in Rwanda) will be provided with workforce training, healthcare and accommodation support to jumpstart their lives in Rwanda, giving them the opportunity to contribute to one of the fastest-growing economies in the world over the last decade,' she said. Right smack dab in the middle of Washington, Donald Trump has found a place that's trouble proof. The 47th president on Tuesday climbed way up to the top of the stairs for an unannounced visit to the roof of the White House briefing room so he could survey the site of the massive ballroom addition which he announced last week. Reporters on site at the complex got word that Trump might be making an appearance at approximately 9:40 am, and after approximately an hour of waiting while Secret Service took various security precautions (including the rare placement of counter-snipers atop the West Wing), Trump exited a door leading from the State Dining Room to the roof of the briefing room at 10:45 am. Accompanied by James McCrery, the architect who has been engaged to design what Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described last week as 'a much-needed and exquisite addition' of 'innately designed and carefully crafted space' in the form of a 90,000 square foot ballroom attached to the East Wing of the building, Trump walked back and forth on the roof of the press workspace and appeared to be looking at the future site of the ballroom as well as the roof of the West Wing itself. When The Independent asked why he was on the roof of the White House, Trump quipped that he was 'taking a little walk' and mentioned the 'ballroom on the other side.' 'Just another way to spend my money for this country,' Trump said. 'Anything I do is financed by me.' Crews are scheduled to break ground on the project in September. It is expected to cost upwards of $200 million, though the president claims it will be paid for by him and as-yet unnamed donors rather than by taxpayers. According to the White House, the new addition would have a seating capacity of 650 — approximately three times the space available in the East Room, which is currently the largest room available on the 18 acre complex. This has meant that larger events such as state dinners have been held in tents constructed on the South Lawn in recent years. The new event facility will be built on the site of the White House's East Wing, which currently stands between the Executive Residence and Treasury Department headquarters. First built in 1902 and enlarged with a second floor four decades later, it houses offices for First Lady Melania Trump and her staff, the White House Military Office, the White House Visitor Office, and other White House support functions. Leavitt said those offices would be temporarily relocated during the construction. According to Leavitt, the East Wing will be 'heavily changed and reconstructed' once the new ballroom is completed. An interior rendering of the ballroom provided by the White House reveals a massive hall with ornate ceilings and chandeliers, replete with gold leaf throughout. The image is reminiscent of the ballroom which Trump had built on the grounds of Mar-a-Lago, the historic 1920s-era Palm Beach mansion that is both a private club run by his family's eponymous hotel and real estate company and his primary residence. Since returning to the White House for his second term in January, Trump has sought to update the appearance of the historic facility to make it more to his liking. He enlisted a cabinetmaker he has previously employed at Mar-a-Lago, who he referred to as his 'gold guy,' to give multiple surfaces in the Oval Office his own Midas touch, leaving the iconic room adorned with ostentatious splashes of pure gold leaf paint in places where there was no such ornamentation before. He has also ordered the iconic Kennedy Rose Garden to be converted into a patio much like the one on which he entertains guests at his Florida social club. The rose bushes that have ringed the area since the Kennedy administration remain, but the grass surface that has been the site of numerous events just outside of the Oval Office has been replaced with paving stones.

Trump administration wants to end abortion coverage through Veterans Affairs

President Donald Trump 's administration is calling to remove abortion coverage from the list of medical benefits for veterans and their families, saying it's not needed. The Department of Veterans Affairs posted the proposed rule change on Monday and opened a public comment period on it that runs through Sept. 3. The department said in its proposal that it wants to ensure it 'provides only needed medical services to our nation's heroes and their families.' The department says it would still provide abortion in life-threatening circumstances — something state laws allow, even in places where bans are in place. But critics of the change note that abortion would not be provided when pregnancies are the result of rape or incest. Amy Friedrich-Karnik, director of federal policy at the Guttmacher Institute, said in a statement that the change would cut off millions of veterans and their families from services. 'Veterans have historically faced significant barriers to reproductive health care, and with the current patchwork of abortion bans and restrictions across the country, these barriers are even steeper today," she said. Veterans Affairs, which provides health coverage for veterans and their dependents, did not include abortion in its coverage until 2022. President Joe Biden 's administration added it months after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and state abortion bans began kicking in. The Biden changed allowed the VA to provide abortion even in states where it was banned. The VA says in its proposal that allowing abortion is legally questionable because Congress has not specifically allowed it. The policy change would also bring the VA's coverage into line with other federal health care plans — including Medicaid and the TriCare coverage for active military members and their families — which exclude abortion in most cases. The VA said in its filings that about 100 veterans and 40 dependents obtain abortions using the benefits each year — far below the projection the department made in 2022 of a total of 1,000 a year. The conservative law firm Alliance Defending Freedom called on the VA to drop abortion coverage in a letter last month, saying the cost or providing abortion takes other health resources away from veterans.
