Pahang to set up AI tech zone, says state exco

KUANTAN: The Pahang government will establish a dedicated high technology zone to attract major players in the artificial intelligence industry.
State Investment, Industries, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Nizar Najib said the zone, to be located in the state capital here, will offer special incentives through the Invest Pahang platform to encourage high-tech companies to establish operations in the state.
"The Pahang high technology zone is specifically aimed for companies in AI, automation and big data. Its exact location in Kuantan will be announced in due course.
"This dedicated zone is expected to draw AI companies to this part of the country, apart from the Klang Valley. These companies will become part of the AI ecosystem and contribute to the development of start-ups across Pahang," he said at the Pahang Skills Development Centre here today.
Earlier, Nizar launched and closed the AI for Productivity Transformation and Speed Grid-Connected Photovoltaic programme at the centre in Semambu.
Present were Yayasan Peneraju chief executive officer Ibrahim Sani and Pahang Skills chairman Datuk Mas'ut Awang Samah.
He said the Pahang high technology zone was part of a long-term strategy to drive digital transformation, strengthen the economy and improve public services and quality of life in the state.
"AI is no longer optional. It is essential. Today's business environment demands automation, intelligent analytics and the ability to make faster and more accurate decisions.
"At the federal level, we already have the National AI Office in place.
"Among other initiatives in Pahang, we are also establishing the AI data centre, which will serve as a new digital platform for marketing local agricultural products both domestically and internationally.
"The centre is scheduled to begin operations in January next year.
"Under the Smart Pahang initiative, Kuantan, Temerloh, Pekan and Bentong have been selected as pilot locations for the Smart City project.
This includes the use of smart cameras for traffic and security monitoring, AI-powered solid waste management systems and flood and air quality monitoring using AI technology."
Nizar said the state government was committed to expanding AI use in public administration, education, agriculture and tourism.

Johor first state to launch cooking oil subsidy sales via eCOSS app

JOHOR BARU: Johor has become the first state to roll out retail sales of subsidised cooking oil packets through the eCOSS mobile application, covering 29 "point of sale" (POS) locations under Phase Two of the Subsidised Cooking Oil Distribution Programme. State Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han said the eCOSS (Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme) app records each 1kg subsidised cooking oil packet transaction, from manufacturers, packagers, wholesalers, and retailers, down to final consumer purchases. The pilot programme, previously tested under the Madani Rahmah Sales initiative, is now extended to participating supermarkets, with purchases limited to three packets per transaction to prevent leakages and ensure supplies reach eligible Malaysians. "To ensure a smooth implementation, Johor Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry officers will be stationed at all 29 outlets between Aug 11 to 15 to assist with registration, app usage, and conduct 'training of trainers' sessions for shoppers and supermarket staff," Lee said after launching the initiative at the Maslee B5 Supermarket today. The federal government allocates 3.3 million subsidised packets monthly to Johor, with RM5 per packet borne by the government. Supplies will be replenished regularly by 19 packaging and wholesale firms to guarantee availability, particularly for B40 households. Lee said the system would strengthen supply chain monitoring and address past complaints of shortages in certain areas. "If it proceeds smoothly, eCOSS will be expanded to other locations," he said. The eCOSS app is available for download on Google Play and the App Store.

Govt open to new, urgent Kelantan projects, despite major projects listed in 13MP, says PM

KOTA BHARU: The government is open to accepting applications for new, urgent projects from Kelantan, despite allocation for major projects has been listed in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the new application will be studied by the government if there is a priority, especially if they have an urgency such as flood mitigation, water supply, energy supply, and eradication of hardcore poverty. "We have started engaging on the national budget, which will certainly take into account the 13MP, so we will review what can be added and prioritised," he said when officiating the closing ceremony of the Kelantan 2025 Madani Rakyat Program at the grounds of Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium here on Saturday (Aug 9). Also present were Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang; Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said compared to before, engagement sessions have been simplified by taking into account input from the state government. "Every time we visit a state, there is a special session that gives the state government an opportunity to provide input, in addition to monitoring ongoing projects. "Sometimes, projects we announce have a large budget, but their implementation is stalled, which is why we continue these discussions with the aim of more effective implementation," he said. On the Kelantan 2025 Madani Rakyat Program, Anwar said it was the best opportunity for the government to get closer and convey information directly to the people. "Hopefully, through this, the government close in on issues of the people and elevate programs that needed attention," he said. The Kelantan 2025 Madani Rakyat Program, led by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, was a three-day event that began last Thursday (Aug 7). The program offered over 100 direct services to the public, an exhibition of the latest technology, and various community-reaching initiatives through the comprehensive approach of the Madani Government. — Bernama
