Hong Kong Derby by the numbers: will we see a jockey win the coveted feature for the first time?
Four of the top five chances in overseas fixed-odds markets will be partnered by riders chasing their maiden success in the prestigious contest
It's the feature everyone in Hong Kong racing wants to win and come Sunday afternoon, there's a very real chance a jockey will be experiencing BMW Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) glory for the first time.
While there are six jockeys riding in Sunday's Derby that already feature on the race's honour roll, four of the top five chances in overseas fixed-odds markets will be ridden by jockeys chasing a maiden success in the coveted contest.
Part of the reason for this is the absence of the injured Zac Purton, but it speaks to the rise of Brenton Avdulla (Rubylot) and Luke Ferraris (My Wish) that they would have been aboard their mounts – the first and second favourites – whether or not the seven-time champion jockey was available.
Whether the same can be said for Ben Thompson (Bundle Award) and Andrea Atzeni (Johannes Brahms) is debatable, but what isn't is the fact that pair are red-hot chances to experience Derby euphoria for the first time this weekend.
Thompson is one of two jockeys riding in the Derby for the first time – the other, the recently arrived James Orman, will tackle Sha Tin's tricky 2,000m start under race conditions for the first time.
At the other end of the scale, Joao Moreira (Packing Angel) and Hugh Bowman (Lo Rider) chase their third victories in the city's most prestigious race.
If either is successful, they will draw level with Gerald Mosse and Douglas Whyte for wins but will still be one short of the most successful Derby rider in the professional era – four-time victor Tony Cruz.
From a training perspective, Cruz (Californiatotality and Stunning Peach) and Caspar Fownes (Lo Rider) chase their third wins, while John Size (Bundle Award, Mickley and Beauty Alliance) hunts Derby win number four. Legendary Australian handler John Moore sits out in front with six successes.
Lucky number nine?
While wide gates can be far from ideal over the Sha Tin 2,000m with its short run to the first turn, the Derby has been one 10-furlong contest where double-figure draws have not been the end of the world.
Since the Derby became a 2,000m race in the year 2000, three gallopers have won the race from the outside gate of 14, including Voyage Bubble in 2023, and Classic Mile winner My Wish will bid to become the fourth this weekend.

Gates three and 10 have been the most prolific in the past 25 years, each producing four winners – a trend connections of Mickley and Markwin will hope continues on Sunday.
Lo Rider (gate one) and Beauty Alliance (five) are the gallopers needing to create history to win – no horse has won the Derby from either of those alleys since 2000.
Gate nine has also produced three winners since 2000 and it's a barrier that gives Thompson a good feeling.
'It's funny, on the way over I said to my wife Steph that I just want a number that feels lucky and my brother's born on the 9th, so hopefully that brings us some luck,' said Bundle Award's jockey.
Can a Private Purchase stand up again?
Once the domain of the Private Purchase (previously raced horse), the previously unraced galloper has very much come to the fore in the Derby in recent years.
While 15 of this century's first 20 Derby winners began their careers elsewhere, the four winners from 2020 to 2023 – Golden Sixty, Sky Darci, Romantic Warrior and Voyage Bubble – were all unraced when they came to Hong Kong.
Phenomenal win! 🤯
While we're reflecting on 2024, just how GOOD were Massive Sovereign and @zpurton in March's @BMW Hong Kong Derby at Sha Tin... 🏆#LoveRacing | #HKracing pic.twitter.com/e34fUbj0Zx — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) December 31, 2024
Massive Sovereign ended that run last year, winning the Derby after beginning his career under the tutelage of Aidan O'Brien in Ireland.
This year it is an even seven-seven split between horses who raced before coming to Hong Kong and those who didn't, although the top two in the market – Rubylot and My Wish – are Private Purchase Griffins (previously unraced horses).

Kohli leads Bengaluru over Punjab for first IPL title
Kohli leads Bengaluru over Punjab for first IPL title The win secured Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first Indian Premier League T20 crown. Photo: Reuters Batting legend Virat Kohli top-scored for Royal Challengers Bengaluru as they beat Punjab Kings by six runs to win their first Indian Premier League T20 title. Kohli's 43 from 35 balls at the top of the order set up Bengaluru for an imposing total of 190-9 which was one big blow too many for a Punjab side that battled until the end, finishing on 184-7. More than 91,000 fans packed into the 132,000-capacity stadium in Ahmedabad, a sea of Bengaluru's red and Kohli's jersey number 18 dominating the stands as chants of "Kohli, Kohli" rang out. They celebrated noisily when Kohli and RCB clinched victory for the first time in the 18 years of the IPL, their three previous finals having all ended in defeat. The 36-year-old Kohli, one of India's all-time greats in all formats of the game, collapsed on the ground after the win and then got up to be hugged by his teammates as the crowd celebrated their hero. "This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team, it's been 18 long years," said Kohli. "I've given this team my youth, my prime, my experience. I gave it everything I have. I never thought this day would come. I was overcome with emotion as soon as the last ball was bowled." "I have stayed loyal to this team, no matter what," he added. "My heart is with Bangalore, my soul is with Bangalore and this is the team I'll play for till the last day I play the IPL." Punjab faltered in their chase after left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya took 2-17 from his four overs. Shashank Singh hit a valiant 61 not out and finished with three sixes and a four off Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood who defended 29 runs in the final over. Hazlewood, who took 3-21 against Punjab in last week's qualifier win after recovering from a shoulder injury, struck first to send back left-handed Priyansh Arya for 24 with Phil Salt taking a stunning catch at the ropes. Impact substitute Prabhsimran Singh was the next to go off Pandya but the Bengaluru crowd went wild when Romario Shepherd had skipper Shreyas Iyer caught behind for one. Pandya stuck again to cut short Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis' stay on 39 and Bengaluru seized momentum and Shashank's late blitz was not enough. "I am very proud of each and every individual who has participated in this team," said Iyer. "There are a lot of youngsters who are playing their first season, they've shown a lot of fearlessness. We wouldn't be here without them. Kudos to them." Bengaluru had the perfect start as 'King Kohli' dug in. Far from his fluent best, he only struck three fours during his innings but in the end it turned out to be key. He lost opening partner Salt for 16 when New Zealand quick Kyle Jamieson struck in his first over to have the England batter caught in the deep off Iyer. Kohli anchored the innings, sharing important partnerships with Mayank Agarwal, who made 24, and then skipper Rajat Patidar, who hit 26. But Punjab kept chipping away with wickets as leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal got Agarwal and Jamieson trapped the captain lbw. Kohli's vigil ended when he mistimed a rising delivery from Afghanistan pace bowler Azmatullah Omarzai for a caught and bowled, the disappointment etched across his face mirrored by his fans. Jamieson took his third wicket to cut short Liam Livingstone's rampant 25 off 15 balls. Wickets kept tumbling as wicketkeeper-batsman Jitesh Sharma fell for a 10-ball 24 and Romario Shepherd for 17 off nine balls. Left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh took three wickets including Shepherd in the 20th over and gave away just three runs. Bengaluru had defeated Punjab in the first playoff to book their fourth final. The 18th edition of the world's richest cricket league ended nine days late due to a pause because of the military conflict between India and Pakistan. (AFP)

The Hong Kong Racing Postscript: who's hot, who's not and the best of May
Zac Purton, Ellis Wong and David Hayes were on fire, while David Hall finally ended a frustrating winless streak Racing fans were treated to a historic victory in Hong Kong's final Group One of the season, while the race for the trainers' championship heated up in May. The Post analyses the jockeys and trainers who had a month to remember or one to forget, as well as the most outstanding victory and winning ride. Who's hot? Zac Purton continued to rack up winners in May, booting home 13 winners from just 61 rides for a strike rate of 21.3 per cent – an almost identical figure to his haul from April. The seven-time champion Hong Kong jockey was the most successful rider of the month ahead of Hugh Bowman, who bagged eight wins, while apprentice Ellis Wong Chi-wang deserves praise for his best month of the term. Wong boosted his seasonal tally to 15 winners with five in May – four of which started at $7.6 or longer. The 24-year-old had just 39 rides, giving him a healthy winning strike rate of 12.82 per cent. David Hayes gave John Size something to think about when he cut the fellow Australian's double-figure lead in the trainers' championship to as little as four winners with a strong return in May. Hayes recorded nine winners – just one ahead of Manfred Man Ka-leung, whose haul came from just 49 runners, giving him a winning strike rate of 16.33 per cent. Size - who leads the title race by seven winners - and Ricky Yiu Poon-fai were the next best handlers with seven wins apiece in May. Who's not? Karis Teetan once again battled in May, scoring just one win from 52 rides to slide to seventh in the jockeys' championship. Four riders towards the bottom of the title standings failed to register a winner in May – Keagan de Melo, Ben Thompson, Antoine Hamelin and Dylan Mo Hin-tung. From a trainer's perspective, David Hall managed just one victory but ended the month on a positive note, with Invincible Sage narrowly beaten in the Group Three Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) before Ka Ying Attack broke the handler's winless streak of 60 runners on Saturday. Me Tsui Yu-sak also had just one winner, while Pierre Ng Pang-chi and Danny Shum Chap-shing each prepared two in May. Win of the month Voyage Bubble's historic success in the Group One Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) was undoubtedly the highlight of the month, with Yiu's stable star becoming the first galloper in 31 years to claim Hong Kong's Triple Crown. UNBELIEVABLE! 🤯 31 years since River Verdon won the #TripleCrown for the first time, Hong Kong has a second winner of the series in Voyage Bubble, who makes light work of his Champions & Chater Cup rivals... 🏆🏆🏆@WorldPool | @mcacajamez | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 25, 2025 Voyage Bubble made light work of a distance query when he charged from midfield to easily round up his rivals, scoring by three and a half lengths under James McDonald. River Verdon was the only previous winner of the Triple Crown, which also features the Group One Stewards' Cup (1,600m) and Group One Gold Cup (2,000m), back in 1993-94. Ride of the month Purton produced a tactical masterclass aboard Shamus Storm to help the promising three-year-old break through for his first triumph at start five. Settled back in the field after his usual tardy start, Shamus Storm was edged off the inside by Purton approaching the 600m to start his run. Purton's genius really came to the fore when he hooked Shamus Storm off the heels of main danger Max Que around the turn, holding the heavily-backed $2.8 second favourite in and preventing him from building momentum at a crucial stage. Shamus Storm let down strongly to power to the lead at the 200m and put the result beyond doubt, with Max Que running on once in the clear for second. Purton was also at his brilliant best on Light Years Charm, while a pair of victorious dirt rides were worth honourable mentions – Wong's on Solid Shalaa and Lyle Hewitson's on Talents Ambition.

Montemurro named new Australia women's football coach
Montemurro named new Australia women's football coach Montemurro's appointment ends a 10-month search for the Matildas. File photo: AFP Joe Montemurro has been appointed as head coach of the Australia women's team, returning home after a successful decade in Europe with Arsenal, Juventus and Lyon. The 55-year-old, who steered French powerhouses Lyon to their fourth consecutive women's league title last month, said it was "the honour of a lifetime". "This team means so much to so many Australians, and I'm humbled by the opportunity to help shape its next chapter," he said. "I've followed their incredible journey closely and am energised by the passion, resilience, and identity they've built." The Matildas captivated the nation and won legions of new fans with their run to the last four of the World Cup on home soil in 2023. But an underwhelming Paris Olympics last year saw Tony Gustavsson depart and they have been without a permanent head coach since. Tom Sermanni, a 70-year-old Scot, has been in temporary charge during a protracted recruitment process, with the side sliding to 16th in the world. "Joe brings world-class experience, a deep understanding of the Australian football landscape, and a genuine connection to our national identity," said Football Australia interim chief Heather Garriock. "Importantly, he has spent the last decade coaching at the very highest levels of the women's game in Europe and brings with him an unparalleled understanding of what is required to compete and succeed at the top of modern football," she added. Montemurro, who won trophies with women's teams at Lyon, Juventus, Arsenal and Melbourne City, will lead the Matildas to the Asian Cup on home soil next year, then through qualifying for the 2027 Women's World Cup.
