Ex-badminton ace's court date with Supermax boss postponed
Stanley Thai (right) wants the High Court to bar the media and public from a defamation trial brought by former national badminton player Robert Lin against him. KUALA LUMPUR : Former national badminton player Robert Lin Woon Fui saw the trials of his defamation suits against Supermax founder Stanley Thai and another businessman, both scheduled to start today, delayed to 2027. Judicial commissioner Eddie Yeo rescheduled the trials for March 29, 30 and 31, 2027. Lin is suing Thai and Teh Chee Kien over statements they allegedly made three years ago, claiming their remarks were false, baseless and maliciously published. He says the statements have damaged his reputation. Last month, Thai and Teh each filed applications for protective orders over their respective cases. Both applications are fixed for hearing on Sept 19. Yeo also directed that Thai and Teh file affidavits by Aug 20, and for all parties to file their written submissions by Sept 10. Lin was represented by Tan Lee Kiat, while G Rajasingam appeared for Thai and Teh. Thai and Teh's protective order applications mirror one filed by Thai in another defamation suit brought against him by his estranged wife, Tan Bee Geok, also due to be heard by Yeo on the same date. Thai and Teh want the court to hold their respective trials behind closed doors and are asking for the media to be barred from covering the proceedings. They also want all court documents sealed and for court transcripts to remain confidential and available only to the parties and their lawyers, with transcribers made to sign non-disclosure agreements. Both men claim their respective trials touch on personal and familial matters which are private and not of public interest. Thai and Teh, both represented by Shearn Delamore & Co, also claim the trials may involve examining the private lives of the parties and their witnesses. They say the parties and their witnesses are of substantial social and commercial standing, and that one witness is about to get married and fearful of repercussions that a public trial may bring. Law firm Nazri Aziz Masura Mak & Tan is acting for Lin in both suits. Lin represented the country in the men's doubles event at the 2006 World Cup, where he was a silver medalist. He also won bronze medals for Malaysia at the 2006 Doha Asian Games and the 2007 SEA Games, held in Thailand. Thai and Tan jointly own Supermax Holdings Sdn Bhd, a substantial shareholder in Supermax Corporation Bhd, one of the world's leading producers of rubber gloves. They were married in 1987, but saw their relationship deteriorate amid allegations from both sides. In 2022, Tan sought a judicial separation. Thai filed for divorce in April last year. Those proceedings are ongoing in the family court.

Fund youth, sports development or risk losing future talent, Hannah Yeoh tells state leaders
SHAH ALAM, Aug 6 — Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh urged Chief Ministers and Menteris Besar to provide sufficient funds for youth and sports development for the coming year. Hannah said this step is crucial to help the executive council members responsible for these portfolios to implement more development programmes in their respective jurisdictions. 'I want to urge all Chief Ministers and Menteris Besar in the coming weeks, as they prepare to table next year's state budgets, to allocate sufficient funds to assist their state youth and sports excos. 'This is not a small portfolio; it looks after the future assets (of the country) and promotes a healthy lifestyle. If they receive adequate budgets, they can implement many more development programmes, but usually, it's not enough,' she said. She was speaking at a press conference after chairing the Malaysia Games (Sukma) Supreme Committee Meeting here yesterday. Hannah also chaired the first Meeting of Ministers and Excos on Youth and Sports Development 2025 yesterday, which was also attended by state youth and sports excos. The Corporate Communications Unit of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in a media statement distributed after the meeting, stated that as of Monday (August 4), the Registrar of Youth Societies records showed that 54 per cent or 53,513 office holders in youth organisations are individuals under the age of 30. This follows the enforcement of the youth age limit in line with the Youth Societies and Youth Development Act (Amendment) 2019 [Act A1602]. 'The enforcement of the Act is expected to have a direct impact on the 8,233 youth organisations registered under the Registrar of Youth Societies office,' the statement read. — Bernama

Men's singles shuttler Justin Hoh in action, — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Men's singles shuttler Justin Hoh has been boosted by his new status as the new national No. 2 and he is now looking forward to more breakthroughs. Justin replaced Lee Zii Jia as the country's No. 2 in the men's singles after leaping eight spots from No. 45 to reach a career high No. 37 in the latest world rankings. Zii Jia, who has been sidelined by an ankle injury since March, has dropped 17 spots from No. 35 to No. 52. The 27-year-old though has a protected ranking of No. 9 and will be making his comeback in the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris. Justin is on the reserves list for the world meet and will only qualify if Zii Jia or current national No. 1 and world No. 25 Leong Jun Hao withdraws. Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin is also currently ahead of Zii Jia in the rankings at No. 42. For Justin, his rise in the rankings came after he reached the final of the World Tour Super 300 Macau Open before finishing runner-up to Indonesia's Alwi Farhan. It was the 21-year-old's first final in the World Tour and he is keen to build on his improved showing after struggling for form this year. 'I feel very happy with my performance in Macau. I hope for more achievements in the future,' said Justin. 'I had positive discussions with my coaches Kenneth Jonassen and K. Yogendran before the tournament and we found the right direction for me to improve. 'I have learnt that I need to be more patient and work on my skills and strategies on court.' Justin is now getting closer to breaking into the world's top 32 which will grant him entry into Super 750 and 1000 competitions. The youngster will return to action in the Hong Kong Open from Sept 9-14.
