The Onion's Exclusive Interview With Lorde

The Onion04-07-2025
New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde has released Virgin, her fourth studio album. The Onion sat down with the artist to discuss identity, inspiration, and what's next.
The Onion : How has your music evolved as you've gotten older?
Lorde: When I was younger I was really intimidated by the black keys on the piano, but now I can't get enough of them.
The Onion : What inspired the X-ray album cover?
Lorde: It's an homage to the TV show Bones .
The Onion : Are you touring soon?
Lorde: I hope not. I just signed up for a pizza-making class.
The Onion: What's your writing process like?
Lorde: My secretary types up my thoughts and faxes them to Jack Antonoff.
The Onion : Who are some artists you'd like to collaborate with in the future?
Lorde: I've always wanted to work with one of those guys who paints themselves silver and pretends to be a statue.
The Onion : You've described yourself as 'in the middle gender-wise.' What does this mean to you?
Lorde: Sitting on a horse in oversized Wranglers, no top. Alternatively, standing barefoot in the rain in a wedding dress. And in both of these scenarios it's heavily implied that I'm a ghost.
The Onion : What are some things to consider when tying a bowline knot?
Lorde: The bowline is an extremely secure knot, but can be hard to adjust. It all comes down to context.
The Onion : What's next for you?
Lorde: Disappearing into some tall grass.

X Plans to Launch AI Text-to-Video Option, New AI Companions

This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. It looks like X will soon integrate its AI-generated text-to-video tool Hotshot, which it acquired back in March, with X owner Elon Musk noting that they're developing a new AI process to 'make creative viral videos fast.' The new process, which Elon says will be called 'Imagine,' looks set to integrate Hotshot's functionality with xAI's Grok engine, in order to give X users their own text-to-video generation tool. Before being acquired by xAI, Hotshot had developed a range of text-to-video and text-to-GIF AI models, and had gained traction among AI enthusiasts for its rapidly developing AI tools. The logical next step for the technology is to enable text-to-video generation direct on X, which would give the platform similar capacity to Google's Veo model, which has already sparked a range of viral trends. Though, of course, the idea is always the seed, and while technical capacity is a big step in video creation, without a good idea, it doesn't mean a heap. But then again, giving more people the capacity to explore their ideas should lead to more creative concepts, and it'll be interesting to see how X users apply 'Imagine' when it does get a release. Though I imagine some level of misuse and/or abuse of such will also come with that. On that front (well not exactly, but…), X has also shared a preview of its coming male AI companion, which it's calling 'Valentine.' As you can see in these examples, X users will soon be able to build a relationship with an AI-powered male character, which is designed to offer companionship, in all that the term implies. Indeed, Elon says that Valentine "will make your heart race." X already offers two AI companions, in the Anime-inspired 'Ani,' and a misbehaving red panda called 'Rudy.' Elon Musk says that Valentine will be a combination of 'Edward Cullen from Twilight and Christian Grey from 50 Shades,' enabling more users to live out their fantasies with an AI partner that'll engage in NSFW interactions. Which feels pretty weird. I mean, no judgment, people can do whatever they want, so long as they're not hurting anybody else. But the fact that the X team is encouraging people to go on virtual dates with their companions seems potentially problematic. Maybe? Either way, X clearly thinks this is a valuable market, and it's looking to more companion types in future. So soon, you'll be able to create videos based on your text, and even spoken prompts via X's AI tools, and have a relationship with an Anime character. The future is here. This is what you wanted. Blood Orange Previews First Album in Six Years ‘Essex Honey' With Two New Singles

Last month, Dev Hynes returned as Blood Orange for the first time in three years with 'The Field,' a Caroline Polachek-assisted single about grief and escapism. As it turns out, the musician has been thinking a lot about these themes in the six years since his most recent studio album. The grief that comes with living, but also growing up, leaving home, and turning to music to make sense of it all works as the foundation of Essex Honey, the new album from Blood Orange, out August 29. Hynes leaned on an expansive list of collaborators across Essex Honey, including Polachek who also appears on the newly-released single 'Mind Loaded' alongside Lorde and Mustafa. Hynes recently produced tracks for Lorde's new album Virgin. He also contributed vocals on Turnstile's 'Seein' Stars,' and the band's frontman Brendan Yates will repay the favor on Essex Honey. The album artwork for Essex Honey calls back to the musician's upbringing just outside of London. The image captures a young boy walking in his school uniform, striped tie blowing in the wind, while holding a basketball in one hand and a CD in another. 'Essex Honey is an album tinted with grief and loss, working towards acceptance and resolution, at a time when the culture is collectively feeling grief and loss, collectively trying to work towards resolution and acceptance,' a release about the album reads. The voice of the collective expands on the album with appearances from Daniel Caesar, Tariq Al-Sabir, the Durutti Column, and author Zadie Smith, marking the first time she has lent her singing voice to an album. Ian Isiah, Tirzah, Eva Tolkin, Wet's Kelly Zutrau, actors Naomi Scott and Amandala Stenberg, and Liam Benzvi also appear on Essex Honey. Why single men aren't approaching women in person anymore: ‘I'm so sick of this'

In today's digital dating world, where single people would often rather meet a potential suitor online, one of the main complaints — particularly from women — is that people rarely approach someone they're interested in in person anymore. A North Carolina model, who said she hasn't been on a date in almost a year, blames her good looks for intimating men from striking up a conversation with her. 'It's difficult being this hot,' the single woman told Jam Press. 'Men think I'm too beautiful to date or worry that I'll turn them down.' Other women — as explained in this Reddit thread — blame men for not knowing how to appropriately approach women out in the wild. '…I think they [men] can approach women for non sexual conversation… Somehow these fools refuse to recognize that we are humans, with whole lives, that we could talk about without going straight to how 'insert body part' is attractive. If they can't have a respectful conversation, then please don't approach.' Another opinionated comment in the same thread said, 'The men who care about not making women uncomfortable don't talk to us anymore because they think hello is enough to upset us. The men who don't care if we're uncomfortable don't care, they still approach. The wrong men stopped talking to us.' A recent video of a woman dressed for a night out, openly sharing her frustrations, hoping an eligible guy would chat her up, made its way to X. The clip has gone viral — and caused quite a stir online. It's hard to decipher what exactly she's saying in the video, but it sounds like, 'A man better pay attention to me tonight. I'm so f—ing sick of this s–t,' she said in the video. '…it's very f—ing simple.' This gave plenty of people an opportunity to chime in with their controversial thoughts on the subject. 'Men aren't scared. They're numb. Approaching women, in the past, was a sacred expression of courage, humor, risk, and play. Now? It's suspect,' one tweet read in response to this woman's declaration. 'The media has manipulated everyone into perceiving a man approaching a woman in public as taboo,' another person wrote, trying to explain why men are no longer going up to women in public to buy them a drink or get their name. 'They're cowards,' quipped someone else, clearly blaming men. 'They would just call us creeps,' read another tweet in response. Solve the daily Crossword
