Jetting in: Defender turns down deal in Scotland, set to play major role for Newcastle

The Advertiser18-06-2025
Joe Shaughnessy has been labelled a warrior and leader and the Irish centreback appears set to play a major role in the rebuild at the Newcastle Jets under new coach Mark Milligan.
Shaughnessy has turned down a two-year contract extension at Dundee FC and the Newcastle Herald understands that 32-year-old has agreed to join the Jets for the 2025-26 A-League campaign.
Dundee confirmed on Wednesday the departure of Shaughnessy - naming the 32-year among a list of players who had not been retained by the Scottish Premier League club.
Milligan is keen to tighten up a Jets defence that leaked 44 goals last season.
Shaughnessy, 32, was the captain at the Dark Blues and would add much-needed experience to the Jets' defence.
Kosta Grozos was used as a makeshift centreback for much of last season by then Jets coach Rob Stanton.
Shaughnessy would be the fifth central defender alongside Aleks Susnjar, Mark Natta, Phil Cancar and scholarship player Ben Van Dorssen on the Jets books.
Cancar, 24, and Natta, 22, can also play as fulbacks.
Milligan told the Newcastle Herald last month: "There will definitely be some changes."
"We need to bring in three experienced players. With what we want to do, that is very important.
"When it comes to experienced players, I want people who fit the character we need as well as the playing profile.
"With all the huffing and puffing I do, young players will learn just as much from the person sitting next to them in the change room."
The Jets confirmed last week that former Japanese international Kota Mizunuma, 35, had signed a one-year extension.
Susnjar, at 29, and striker Lachie Rose, 26, are the only other players aged above 24 currently on the roster.
Shaughnessy, a former Ireland under-21 representative, has played his entire career in Scotland, including stints at St Mirren, St Johnstone and Aberdeen.
He returned from a torn ACL midway through last season and helped turn around Dundee's form to ensure the Dark Blues stayed in the top flight.
Shaughnessy, who stands 183cm, made 11 appearnces.
In that time, Dundee conceded just 14 goals and recorded three clean sheets.
The centre half averaged 13 clearances a game, won 58 aerials duels and scored a goal.
Shaughnessy's expected arrival follows a two-year deal signed by Daniel Wilmering this week.
Milligan has 14 senior players on contract, plus three on scholarships - Will Dobson, Alex Nunes, Van Dorssen.
Former Sydney FC midfielder Max Burgess is understood to have agreed to terms, with an announcement expected in the next fortnight.
One of the vacant places will go to a second keeper.
The Jets begin pre-season training in July.

Shayne O'Cass's tips, inside mail for Scone and Albury Tuesday, August 19, 2025

Racenet form analyst Shayne O'Cass previews Tuesday's NSW meetings at Scone and Albury, presenting his best bets and quaddie leg analysis. â– â– â– â– â– BEST BET Race 1 No.4 SCATPAK: Big run on debut on April 1, trialling like the winner here. NEXT BEST Race 7 No.2 OAKFIELD NEPTUNE: Impressive winner then chased two good ones home in the Class 1. VALUE Race 6 No.10 PENINSULA: Two wins either side of the spell contain considerable merit. QUADDIE Race 4: 1,2,7,9 Race 5: 1,7,8,11,12 Race 6: 10 Race 7: 2 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Aaron Bullock can add to his Scone tally of 124 wins on Monday. LAY OF THE DAY Race 1 No 8 LEOVNANNI: Has some serious competition from the (other) locals not least Scatpak. NATION CHANGING (9) is the most interesting, exciting and promising horse in at Scone IMHO owing to the fact that the son of Cosmic Force is unbeaten in his two runs from last preparation, beginning with that easy win here where he rolled an odds-on favourite. Nation Changing finished third of three, five-odd lengths, behind Tuesday rival SARATOGA POWER (2) in a trial here the other day but was just going around for a spin more or less. BET: NATION CHANGING (9) to win, exacta 9 to beat 2. BE MORE PACIFIC (8) was a $27,500 HTBA Yearling purchase. He is from the first crop of North Pacific out of a three-quarter-sister to four-time Appearance. Trialled twice and both contained merit. Drawn 1 on debut has got to help. SMART BUY (7) has the race-experience and the home-ground advantage. Good form too. Not sure both of the Archibald debutantes will run but SIMPLY GOLD (11) and TACITLY (12) are both nice horses. BET: BE MORE PACIFIC (8) each-way, box trifecta 1,7,8,11,12 DD 1st Leg 8, 2nd Leg 2 (or if scratched 4). PENINSULA (10) was passed in at Easter with a $300,000 reserve. The now 4YO gelding is a son of Snitzel from the same family as the Japanese star, Mikki Isle. Peninsula has won twice now, either side of a spell. He bolted in first-up and keep in mind, he beat subsequent Grafton Guineas winner Ronny be to win his Maiden. RURA PENTHE (11) has finished on the podium at 12 of his 21 starts but only two of them are wins. At least one of them was first-up but he has been pretty costly to follow. DEEBO (8) hasn't – he's won 4 from 11! BET: PENINSULA (10) to win. Oakfield versus Oakfield here? OAKFIELD NEPTUNE (2) and OAKFIELD PLUTO (4) are so similar in that their records thus far are '13' and '12'. They are almost impossible to split. Me? I am with 'Neptune' mostly because the two that beat her last start, Tickle Me Pink and Expido, are way better than your average Class 1 horses. Outside of the two Oakfields, one has to be hugely wary and respectful of the locally trained pair of CRESTA RUN (7) and NOVA CENTAURI (8). The latter is one for one at Scone whilst Cresta Run has four starts there for three seconds and a third. BET: OAKFIELD NEPTUNE (2) to win or if scratched OAKFIELD PLUTO (4) to win. â– â– â– â– â– ALBURY TIPS BEST BET Race 6 No.5 PARTHENOPE: Spelled after an impressive debut win. Top shelf trialler on Aug 11. NEXT BEST Race 7 No.2 DEEPWATER ARTIST: Won first start; took a Highway winner to beat him the next time. VALUE Race 4 No.10 SAPPHIRES SON: Last start winner in a similar style race to this. ALBURY INSIDE MAIL SAPPHIRES SON (10) was rewarded for his efforts this campaign with a win at home at Goulburn last start in a mile benchmark 58. It wasn't the world's strongest 58 and he went around with 51kg on his back. Still, you can never knock a winner and he's in another suitable assignment today. JUST LIKE LIAM (2) was 1500m to back to 1200m one start to the next but is back to 1500m this time which is prime territory for the son of Magic Albert. He loves it here at home too. BET: SAPPHIRES SON (10), JUST LIKE LIAM (2) each-way, quinella 2,10. GETTY (8) is such a cleverly-named horse; he is by Capitalist! Long story short, he started off at Randwick with the Snowdens and had form behind the likes of Estriella, Bases Loaded, Spring Lee, In Flight. He's hardly run a bad race for Matthew Kelley, in fact, his last run was excellent under his crushing weight. If it stays Heavy, keep in mind that SHEILA (3) is 5 for 5 on Heavy! Soft form is good too; this is her trip and she has won twice at Albury. BET: GETTY (8) to win, Daily Double 1st Leg 8, 2nd Leg 2. PARTHENOPE (5) is trained by the nine-times Highway winner, Danielle Seib. It would be no surprise to see this mare in a Highway one day. She led throughout to win a 1200m Goulburn Maiden on Oct 8. Resurfaced in an 800m trial down there finishing a nose second to Highway Strip! YOUR MAGIC (1) is a huge player. AMERICAN RUSS (4) somehow has only 1 win from 40 starts. He is so much better than that and keep in mind that his solitary win was here at Albury and only three runs ago. DEEPWATER ARTIST (2) will, IMHO, make it in midweek grade. Well, more importantly, his trainer Matthew Kelley said it first when we rang him on his way to Bathurst races on Monday morning. First off, the debut win was outstanding. As for the follow up run, it took a past-Highway winner, Salute Again, to beat him. Shamus Award's daughter SISTER SHAY (4) has a win and three seconds in her four runs for Craig Widdison. Raced here twice for a win and a second. Has to be respected.

Japanese rookie joins twin sister as LPGA Tour champ

Akie Iwai has joined twin sister Chisato as a rookie LPGA Tour champion at Columbia Edgewater, closing with a six-under 66 for a four-stroke victory in The Standard Portland Classic. The 23-year-old Japanese capped her bogey-free round with birdies on the final two holes, running in an 18-footer on the last before Chisato rushed on the green and sprayed her with champagne. Akie Iwai broke through in her first season on the LPGA Tour after winning six times on the JLPGA Tour. She had second-place finishes in Thailand in February and Los Angeles in April, then watched her sister win at Mayakoba in May in Mexico. On Sunday, Chisato Iwai shot a 64 to tie for third, five strokes back. The winner finished at 24-under 264 on the tree-lined course. She opened with consecutive 67s, then shot a 64 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead into the final round. Akie Iwai is the fifth player from Japan to win this season, following her sister, Rio Takeda, Mao Saigo and Miyu Yamashita. "This is a special year for us," Akie Iwai said. "When I saw my mom crying, oh. "So many Japanese people this year won, so inspired me." They are the fourth set of sisters to win on the LPGA Tour, joining Jessica and Nelly Korda, Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn and Annika and Charlotta Sorenstam. American Gurleen Kaur was a career-best second, closing with a 65. Linn Grant of Sweden had a 67 to join Chisato Iwai at 19 under, while Grace Kim (70) - who started the round in second - finished fifth at 18 under as the best-placed Australian. Cassie Porter (67) was three shots further back, with fellow Aussies Robyn Choi (65) 14 under and Gabriela Ruffels (70) eight under. American amateur Kiara Romero shot a 64 to tie for seventh at 16 under in her first tour start. "It feels great to just play really well my first LPGA event," Romero said. "Kind of gives me a lot of confidence going into the school year ..." The tournament is the longest continuous event on the LPGA Tour except for the majors, dating to 1972. With AAP.

Hawks lay down their marker with thrilling first-up win

Hawthorn have laid down their marker as the AFLW team to watch after claiming a thrilling four-point away win over perennial contenders Brisbane in their season opener. The Hawks, who lost to eventual grand finalists Brisbane in their qualifying final last season, headed to Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday with a point to prove. Daniel Webster's charges defended their hearts out to claim a 4.9 (33) to 3.11 (29) victory in front of 4208 fans, leaving Brisbane to rue their wastefulness. "Especially after last year's finals, we wanted to make a statement, and I think we came out and did that, which is really good," defender Tilly Lucas-Rodd told the Seven Network. Midfield tough nut Eliza West (25 disposals, 18 contested possessions), running defender Lucas-Rodd (27 disposals) and skipper Emily Bates (20 touches) led the charge. Aine McDonagh (two goals) and Ainslie Kemp (nine intercepts) were excellent at each end. Hawthorn were defensively brilliant, keeping Brisbane goalless in the second and third quarters. For Brisbane, Jade Ellenger (10 intercepts, 19 disposals) was a fierce competitor down back with support from Jennifer Dunne (six marks), while Ally Anderson (21 disposals) and Belle Dawes (16 disposals) were busy. The Hawks suffered a massive pre-game blow when Irish gun Aileen Gilroy withdrew through injury, but they still flew out of the blocks, with the first five inside-50s of the game. But Hawthorn could only claim four points from those entries and Brisbane pounced through Taylor Smith. Greta Bodey ensured the Hawks finally got some bang for their buck when she kicked a classy goal late in the term, but Dakota Davidson nudged Brisbane out to a four-point lead at quarter-time. The second term was all Hawthorn, with McDonagh putting Hawthorn back in front, before Casey Sherriff extended the lead to nine points after the half-time siren. The Hawks had a scare when Jasmine Fleming went down grabbing her right knee, but she had her leg taped and was able to return to play. Hawthorn led by 13 points at the start of the final term when Fleming burst out of a stoppage and hit McDonagh on the chest for her second goal. But a wonderful goal from Ellie Hampson gave Brisbane a second wind. The Lions kept peppering Hawthorn's goal without snatching the lead, and instead opened a third consecutive season with a home loss. Craig Starcevich's Brisbane next travel to face Fremantle on Saturday, before Hawthorn host Carlton in Frankston that night.
