Rybakina's former coach Vukov cleared to return from WTA ban

Elena Rybakina's former coach, Stefano Vukov, is eligible to receive credentials at WTA tournaments again, following the lifting of his provisional suspension by the women's tennis governing body.
Rybakina ended her five-year partnership with Vukov last August, a few days before the U.S. Open, before she appointed Novak Djokovic's former mentor Goran Ivanisevic for the 2025 season in what turned out to be a short and fruitless spell.
The WTA confirmed in January this year it had provisionally suspended Vukov due to a potential breach of its code of conduct, pending the outcome of an investigation.
But former Wimbledon champion Rybakina rehired him to her team while she was working with Ivanisevic, sparking concern from the tennis fraternity.
"The WTA is fully committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all athletes and other participants, as set out in our WTA code of conduct and safeguarding code," the tour said.
"Any sanctions issued following a breach of these safeguarding rules are carefully considered and are subject to appeal before an independent tribunal.
"While case details remain confidential, we can confirm that Vukov is eligible to receive credentials at WTA events."
The WTA has not said who raised the complaint against Vukov.
Vukov, who guided Rybakina to the title at the All England Club in 2022, denies any wrongdoing and told The Athletic he had "never abused anyone" after the outlet first reported about the provisional suspension.
World number 10 Rybakina of Kazakhstan has maintained Vukov did not mistreat her and previously said she was not happy with coaches and commentators talking about the situation. REUTERS

Japan school exits hugely popular baseball event over bullying
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS PLACEHOLDER ANYMORE TOKYO – A Japanese high school hit by a bullying scandal has withdrawn from the country's hugely popular summer baseball tournament after a social media frenzy, officials said on Sunday. The two-week 'Koshien' high school tournament is watched by millions on national television each year and has launched the careers of many of Japan's leading players. Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani and San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish both earned their spurs in the tournament played at Koshien Stadium near the western city of Osaka. An outcry over alleged violence earlier this year at the baseball team of Koryo High School in the Hiroshima region prompted calls on social media for their withdrawal. 'We have decided to pull out, and will swiftly conduct an overhaul of our education method,' Masakazu Hori, the principal of the school in western Japan, told reporters. It is reportedly the first time that a school has exited mid-tournament over a scandal related to player violence. Koshien tournament co-organiser, the Japan High School Baseball Federation, on Sunday described Koryo High's decision as 'extremely regrettable' and vowed to continue efforts to 'eradicate violence, bullying and irrational hierarchical relationships'. Acts of violence included shoving him in the chest and slapping him in the face, with the victim then transferred to another school in March following an apology by his assailants, the school said. Koryo High reported the assault to the federation, was given a reprimand in March and did not initially publicise the incident. But emotional social media posts detailing the case went viral earlier this month, triggering an outpouring of anger against the school. Unsubstantiated information then swirled online about other instances of violence allegedly involving Koryo's baseball team. Koryo High principal Hori warned on Sunday that the posts 'include pure speculation not based on facts, and slanders against unrelated students'. 'Some of our students have been vilified and chased after, on their way to and from school,' he said, adding that even a bomb threat had been received. AFP

Wrexham denied by Southampton late show on Championship return
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Wrexham's Danny Ward looks dejected after Southampton's Jack Stephens scores their second goal. LONDON – Wrexham endured a long wait to play Championship football – the aim is the Premier League eventually – and manager Phil Parkinson was just proud of his team regardless of the result. On Saturday, they suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat to two late Southampton goals on their return to English football's second tier after 43 years, while Sheffield United were humbled 4-1 by Bristol City. Backed by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham have enjoyed a dream ascent from the National League to the Championship with three consecutive promotions. They played their first game in the second tier in 43 years and 86 days, the longest gap between matches at that level since Doncaster Rovers between 1958 and 2008. 'I think when we reflect, it's a very proud day for the club playing at this level and there was a lot of positives for us,' said Parkinson. 'The new lads came in and have done really well but the existing players as well. I thought they were really good. That gives us great heart for the season ahead.' After another summer of heavy investment in the transfer market, the Welsh side looked set to make a flying start to their ambition to reach the Premier League. Top stories Swipe. Select. Southampton, relegated from the Premier League last season, were under the orders of Will Still for the first time and the former Lens coach had a telling hand to play in the turnaround. Still brought left-back Ryan Manning off the bench in the final quarter and the Ireland international secured a memorable three points for the Saints with a goal and assist. Manning's brilliant free kick on 90 minutes levelled before he crossed for Jack Stephens to fire in the winner six minutes into added time. 'It was crazy,' said Still. 'Good to show a bit of grit and determination. To bring the energy and place alive which probably helped us bundle the ball over the line is good.' Ruben Selles' tenure as Blades boss got off to a nightmare start as Scott Twine's double and goals from Ross McCrorie and Anis Mehmeti gave Gerhard Struber a commanding win in his first match as Bristol City boss. Millwall shocked highly-fancied Norwich City 2-1 at Carrow Road thanks to substitute Macaulay Langstaff's late winner. Dael Fry's first goal in more than three years ensured Rob Edwards' reign as Middlesbrough head coach got off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Swansea. Adrian Segecic scored on his debut to give Portsmouth a 1-0 win at Oxford, while Stoke City struck twice in stoppage time to beat Derby County 3-1. Charlton Athletic also scored a winner in added time to beat Watford 1-0 on their return to the Championship. Coventry and Hull played out a 0-0 stalemate, while QPR and Preston shared the points in a 1-1 draw. Birmingham, bankrolled by an ownership group containing seven-time Super Bowl winning NFL quarterback Tom Brady, began their campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Ipswich Town after conceding a controversial stoppage time penalty. Two Japanese boxers die after brain injuries at same Tokyo event
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Two boxers in Japan have died from brain injuries. TOKYO – Two boxers in Japan have died from brain injuries they incurred in separate bouts during the same event in Tokyo, officials said. Super featherweight Shigetoshi Kotari and lightweight Hiromasa Urakawa, both 28, fought on the same card in Tokyo's Korakuen Hall on August 2. Both were later rushed to hospital where they had brain surgery. Kotari, who battled to a draw after 12 rounds against fellow Japanese fighter Yamato Hata, lost consciousness soon after and 'passed away at 10:59 pm on August 8', his M.T boxing gym said on its website on Saturday. 'He did his best to fight his way through the surgery and treatment he had been receiving at a Tokyo hospital due to acute subdural haematoma,' the gym's post said. Urakawa was stopped in the eighth and final round against Yoji Saito and 'tragically succumbed to injuries sustained during his fight', the World Boxing Organization (WBO) said in an Instagram post on Sunday. Urakawa died on Saturday night, according to local media reports. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Tsuyoshi Yasukochi, secretary-general of the Japan Boxing Commission, told local media after their hospitalisation that it was likely 'the first time in Japan two fighters underwent skull-opening surgery for injuries stemming from the same event'. In other combat sports news, middleweight Anthony Hernandez got the victory over Georgian Roman Dolidze by securing a fourth-round rear-naked choke on Saturday night in the main event of UFC Fight Night at the UFC Apex. 'Man, I want a title shot,' Hernandez said in the Octagon following the win. 'What do I gotta do?' Hernandez (15-2, 1 NC MMA) has now finished 12 of his last 16 fights, and he will be watching intently to see who comes away victorious in the UFC 319 main event next Saturday in Chicago. As for Dolidze (15-4 MMA), it snapped a three-fight winning streak in a crowded division. Women's strawweight Iasmin Lucindo from Brazil and bantamweight Steve Erceg from Australia won their respective fights by unanimous decision. Lucindo (18-6 MMA) has won three of her last four and prevented opponent Angela Hill (18-15 MMA) from restarting her win streak. Erceg (13-4 MMA) snapped a three- fight losing skid by moving up to bantamweight from flyweight. He utilized several submission attempts to frustrate Jamaican Ode' Osbourne (13-9 MMA) and secure the win. AFP, REUTERS
