Wrexham's Danny Ward looks dejected after Southampton's Jack Stephens scores their second goal.
LONDON – Wrexham endured a long wait to play Championship football – the aim is the Premier League eventually – and manager Phil Parkinson was just proud of his team regardless of the result.
On Saturday, they suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat to two late Southampton goals on their return to English football's second tier after 43 years, while Sheffield United were humbled 4-1 by Bristol City.
Backed by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham have enjoyed a dream ascent from the National League to the Championship with three consecutive promotions.
They played their first game in the second tier in 43 years and 86 days, the longest gap between matches at that level since Doncaster Rovers between 1958 and 2008.
'I think when we reflect, it's a very proud day for the club playing at this level and there was a lot of positives for us,' said Parkinson.
'The new lads came in and have done really well but the existing players as well. I thought they were really good. That gives us great heart for the season ahead.'
After another summer of heavy investment in the transfer market, the Welsh side looked set to make a flying start to their ambition to reach the Premier League.

Southampton, relegated from the Premier League last season, were under the orders of Will Still for the first time and the former Lens coach had a telling hand to play in the turnaround.

Manning's brilliant free kick on 90 minutes levelled before he crossed for Jack Stephens to fire in the winner six minutes into added time.

REUTERS/Jorge Adorno/File Photo South American soccer governing body CONMEBOL on Tuesday announced a system to detect racism, hate speech and abuse on social media directed at players, referees, clubs and others with the aim of taking action against the perpetrators. The system will be used starting with the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana continental club competitions, both of which begin later on Tuesday. CONMEBOL said the system, implemented in partnership with Signify Group, allows "threats to be identified in real time, abusive behaviour to be deterred and concrete action to be taken against those responsible." Actions against perpetrators may include account suspension, stadium access restrictions and reports to relevant authorities, CONMEBOL added. REUTERS

South Africa level T20 series after Brevis ton flattens Australia

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox South Africa levelled the three-match Twenty20 series against Australia after Dewald Brevis smashed an unbeaten 125 off 56 balls to set up their emphatic 53-run victory in the second match in Darwin on Tuesday. Brevis smashed the highest score by a South African batsman in a T20 International to power the tourists to a commanding 218-7 despite a top order wobble at the Marrara Stadium. Australia were bundled out for 165 in 17.4 overs as their nine-match winning streak in the format came to an end. Player of the match Brevis said after being reminded of his record: "I haven't really thought of it like that, to be honest, but I'm just extremely grateful to God and it's been great. "You obviously want to win and come back stronger after the first game, so that was fantastic. "Everyone played their part, whatever it was. We took our catches, the guys nailed their plans, and it was just great." Put in to bat, South Africa began briskly but slumped to 57-3 inside seven overs with skipper Aiden Markram among the dismissed trio. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Brevis combined with Tristan Stubbs (31) and counter-attacked in spectacular fashion to prop up South Africa. The 22-year-old raced to a 41-ball hundred, his first in T20 Internationals, and remained unbeaten after a knock studded with eight sixes and 12 fours. Australia wobbled early in their reply, losing opener Travis Head to Markram's part-time spin in the second over. Teenaged left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka (3-57) conceded five fours in his first over but claimed the important wicket of Cameron Green and returned to remove Maxwell and Mitchell Owen. Tim David (50) hit his second half-century of the series but Australia kept losing wickets, which derailed their chase. The teams meet in Cairns on Saturday for the decider. REUTERS
