Yamal, Lewandowski starting Barca's preseason match in Seoul
Head coach Hans Flick lived up to his word after declaring Wednesday that Yamal, the Spanish club's new No. 10, will play against FC Seoul of the K League 1 at Seoul World Cup Stadium in the South Korean capital.
Yamal is widely regarded as the next big thing in international football at age 18. He netted 18 goals in 55 matches in all competitions last season, as Barca accomplished a domestic treble with the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey title and the Spanish Super Cup title. Yamal was recently awarded No. 10, an iconic numeral previously won by club legend Lionel Messi.
Lewandowski showed no signs of slowing down last season at age 36, leading his club with 27 goals in league play.
The star-studded starting lineup will also include Brazilian star Raphinha, considered a serious contender for the Ballon d'Or award as the world's top player, and Spanish midfielder Pedri, who led Barca with 35 starts in La Liga last season. Veteran Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo will serve as captain at the start.
Former Manchester United star Marcus Rashford, recently loaned to Barcelona, will start the match on the bench.
Jesse Lingard, Rashford's ex-Man United teammate currently with FC Seoul, will start for the K League 1 club as captain.
He will be joined by other regulars, such as Jordanian defender Yazan Al-Arab, veteran left back Kim Jin-su and national team attacker Moon Seon-min.
Defender Kim Ju-sung was kept off the squad list, hours after FC Seoul had announced he was joining Sanfrecce Hiroshima of the top Japanese league, J1 League.
Kim, 24, made his K League debut with FC Seoul in 2019. Save for a two-year stint with the military club Gimcheon Sangmu FC, Kim has spent his entire club career with FC Seoul.
This is the first of two preseason matches for FC Barcelona in South Korea during their visit here in 15 years.
After this match, FC Barcelona will travel southeast to take on Daegu FC, another K League 1 club, at Daegu Stadium in Daegu at 8 p.m. Monday. (Yonhap)

Son Heung-min draws penalty for LAFC in MLS debut
Son Heung-min marked his Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) debut with a strong performance as a second-half substitute in an away match, drawing a key penalty that led to his team's equalizer. Son came off the bench in the 61st minute to replace David Martinez for his first Major League Soccer (MLS) match against Chicago Fire FC at SeatGeek Stadium Bridgeview, Illinois, on Saturday (local time), as LAFC fought back for a 2-2 draw. Some 10 minutes after firing a weak left-footed shot from outside the box in the 67th minute, Son made his presence felt, with LAFC trailing 2-1. He was sent on a counterbreak after Brian Gutierrez hit the left goal post at the other end, and was brought down by a hard challenge from Carlos Teran. Referee Ricardo Montero let the play continue first, but after a call down from the video assistant referee, Montero reviewed the play and awarded LAFC a penalty. Denis Bouanga converted the ensuing spot kick to level the score. Son had a right-footed shot blocked by Chicago's Jonathan Dean during stoppage time as the teams ended in a stalemate. Son said afterward he was "a bit disappointed" with not coming away with a victory but he felt everyone "put in a lot of effort." "Happy I made my debut and I hope the goals come soon," he said. "It was a decent 30 minutes in my legs, so getting ready for next week. We'll see how I progress with the training sessions and with the players and we'll see if next week I can start the game and make a big impact." LAFC will next play New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (local time), or 8:30 a.m. Sunday in South Korea. Son was unveiled as the newest member of LAFC on Wednesday, after ending his 10-year tenure with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. California dreaming: Son Heung-min wants to go down as legend for LAFC
Having just completed a decadelong career in England as a veritable legend for his former club, South Korean football star Son Heung-min says he now wants to go down as a legend for his new club too. Son was unveiled as the newest member of Los Angeles Football Club in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The Major League Soccer club said they had acquired Sonny, as he is widely known, on a permanent transfer from Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League through 2027 with an option for 2028 and an additional option through June 2029. Son ended his 10-year Spurs tenure as the fifth-best scorer in club history with 173 goals in 454 matches in all competitions. He won the Premier League Golden Boot as its top goal scorer for the 2021-2022 season, and only three months ago, he captained Tottenham to the UEFA Europa League title and ended the North London club's 17-year trophy drought. Now 33, Son said he will embrace new challenges that lie ahead. "There is no guarantee that I will play well here, just because I had success in Europe. I am getting a fresh start, and my dream is to finish my time here as a legend," Son said at his introductory press conference at BMO Stadium. "Many people in the ownership group put in so much work to bring me here. I always want to give back what I receive, and that's just the way I've lived my life. When the time comes to leave the club, I want to be called a legend on my way out." Son revealed that LAFC "was not my first choice" as his next destination after his 2024-2025 Premier League season ended, with his status for the next season -- the final one of his contract -- in doubt. But a conversation with John Thorrington, LAFC's co-president and general manager, "changed my heart and my brain." One of those teammates is former Tottenham goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris, who played with Son for nine seasons before joining LAFC in 2024. Son said conversations with the French keeper did play a role in his decision to come to Los Angeles but also cracked, "He's back to being my captain, so I have to say something good about him." The playing calendars in Europe and MLS are different. Tottenham just played a preseason match in Seoul on Sunday for Son's final match and will kick off their new season next week. The MLS regular season, though, kicked off in February. Son will have to jump onto a moving train, but he dispelled any concerns about his fitness. "I just had a good preseason, and I don't think people should worry about my physical condition," he said. "We have some paperwork to take care of.
