Capitec employee wins legal battle against debarment after accepting R100 stolen by colleague
A Capitec Bank employee has successfully challenged his debarment, which occurred after the bank accused him of colluding with a colleague by accepting stolen money.
Mhleli Glwala, who had been diligently working at the Gugulethu branch of Capitec since June 2015, experienced a career upheaval when his colleague, referred to as DM, manipulated a client through a phone banking app.
In June 2024, DM performed an authorised transaction on the client's account and stole R1000 using a cash send.
DM subsequently contacted Glwala via WhatsApp, instructing him to withdraw the illicit funds and deposit R900 into his son's account and keep R100 for himself.
Following this request, the situation escalated when DM later demanded Glwala delete the WhatsApp message, a request he refused. An investigation ensued and Gwala provided the forensic team with the WhatsApp text.
When the investigation was concluded, Gwala was charged with misconduct and accused of dishonesty for assisting DM to withdraw money he had fraudulently taken from a client's account.
In his defence, Gwala denied any wrongdoing and maintained that he was unaware that the transaction was fraudulent.
In July 2024, he was subjected to a polygraph test to verify the truthfulness of his claims and the test results indicated that he was not honest regarding his knowledge about the unauthorised nature of the transaction.
During the disciplinary hearing, the bank focused on the polygraph results, however, Gwala presented evidence from DM who testified that he acted alone when defrauding the client and confirmed that Gwala was not aware of the nature of the transaction.
However, the chairperson found him guilty of misconduct and noted that Gwala blindly followed through with instructions without verifying the source of the funds and reasons for DM's request.
He was issued with a final written warning and a two day suspension. Despite the sanction, the bank initiated debarment proceedings against Gwala, and the panel decided to debar him in December 2024.

A tragic accident off the West Coast has claimed the lives of three local fishermen after their vessel capsized near Shelly Point on Friday afternoon. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) confirmed the incident, saying their Mykonos and St Helena Bay stations were activated at 16:11 following eyewitness reports of a man clinging to a capsized fishing boat, with more people feared in the water. A Good Samaritan, wearing a wetsuit, was found in the surf searching among the rocks for the third missing fisherman. An NSRI rescue swimmer joined the search, and together they located and recovered the man's body from the rocky shoreline. All three men were declared deceased and their bodies were handed over to police and the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. The victims are all believed to be local adult fishermen. Their identities have not yet been released. 'The circumstances that led to the fishing boat capsizing and the time of the incident is not clear,' said Cedric Brown, NSRI Mykonos duty coxswain. 15-year-old learner arrested after stabbing schoolmate in KZN
A 15-year-old learner was arrested after stabbing his schoolmate in KwaMhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), on Thursday, 14 August 2025. Police received a call about a student who was stabbed and needed an ambulance. They immediately rushed to the school and found the victim lying face up with a stab wound on his left chest. The fight commenced after school between the two learners and proceeded to the street next to the school, where the suspect took out a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest. The suspect fled the scene and was traced to his residence, where he was arrested. The knife used to carry out the murder was found in the possession of the suspect's friend, who was taken in for further questioning. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) confirmed the death of the student. Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed to The South African that the cause of the fight is unknown yet. Investigations led the police to a house in Phuthaditjhaba, where they found the vehicle parked in the yard. The police then instructed the suspect to open the boot, where they discovered the victim. 'Police discovered the alleged victim with visible injuries, including an open wound to his right cheek and lower lip,' read the police statement. The Garsfontein CPF is urging residents to take a proactive stance against crime by reporting every incident, no matter how small, directly to the police. CPF chairperson Aris Ruyter said there is a rise in petty but persistent theft, with suspects targeting outdoor lights, taps, cables, and tools. 'While these crimes may seem small, failing to report them could allow offenders to escalate their activities. 'If it's not reported to SAPS, it's as if it never happened, there's no case, no consequence, and repeat offenders simply move on to bigger crimes,' explained Ruyter. He stressed that crime reports create formal dockets that enable investigations and possible arrests. 'Without this paper trail, crimes remain unrecorded and offenders are free to reoffend.' Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said that no office has the right to refuse to open a case for victims or residents. Van Dyk said that should a victim be turned away when trying to open a case, they should look out for a 'Rate Our Service' poster on display at the Community Service Centre (CSC) at the police station. 'If it is not available, you have the right to speak directly to the station commander about your complaint. The commander's official cellphone number should be displayed in the CSC,' Van Dyk explained. He said if you are still not satisfied, you can escalate the matter by contacting the District Office or the Provincial Office to lodge an official complaint. Following up after reporting a crime – The completed case docket is allocated to a police detective who will carry out the investigation. – All enquiries can be directed to the detective. – The detective in charge of the particular case will complete the investigation and present the docket to the relevant court for prosecution. – The detective will keep you informed of any progress, including when to attend the court hearings.
