Maharashtra Congress alleges irregularities in MHT-CET State exams, writes to CM to seek a probe

The Hindu28-04-2025

The Maharashtra Congress Committee on Monday, wrote to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding a probe in the Maharashtra Health and Technical Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET), a State-level common entrance examination, alleging irregularities.
Maharashtra's State Common Entrance Test Cell conducted the test on April 27, 2025, for admissions in engineering colleges for the academic year 2025-26. After the test, there were reports of students claiming that over a dozen questions had incorrect options.
A day later, Harshvardhan Sapkal, President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, on April 28, alleged that irregularities during the examination have caused concern among students and parents.
Writing to the CM, the letter claimed, 'Students have complained that at the exam center in Ahilyanagar district, 20 to 25 questions in the 50-mark mathematics paper had incorrect answer options. This is a very serious matter, and the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee has demanded that students be awarded marks for these erroneous questions.'
The Congress State President further stated that in the mathematics paper, among the 50 questions, 20 to 25 had incorrect answer options. In some cases, all four options given were wrong. However, since students were required to attempt all questions, they were compelled to choose incorrect options, the letter alleged.
Mr. Sapkal claimed that when students complained about this at the exam center, their grievances were ignored. 'Similar complaints have been reported from other examination centers across the State. Some centers also faced server outages, but satisfactory responses were not provided by the examination authorities. This examination is crucial for engineering admissions. If as many as 20 to 25 questions had incorrect options, it could cause significant harm to students. Who is responsible for this? Why should students suffer due to the negligence of the institutions or companies responsible for preparing the papers and conducting the examination? This is not merely a matter of a few questions; it concerns the future of thousands of students,' he said.
The opposition party has demanded that the State government's intervention into the matter, urging the government to take the issue seriously and also take strict action against those responsible. 'Institutions that cannot properly prepare papers or organise examinations should never be entrusted with such tasks again and should be blacklisted. The State government is fully responsible for ensuring that students are not harmed under any circumstances,' Mr. Sapkal.

Mahayuti will unitedly contest local body polls, but open to friendly fights: Fadnavis

Nagpur/Akola: The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance will contest the upcoming local body elections together, barring friendly fights where tie-ups do not materialise, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday. Fadnavis told reporters in Akola "we have decided to contest the polls as an alliance. There will be friendly fights wherever a tie-up does not work." He added the final decision will rest with state party president Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Talking to TOI in Nagpur, Bawankule said, "We will fight all elections in the state together as a grand alliance. We have given instructions to the party leaders and workers. Our local-rung workers are discussing this with each other. However, if a dispute arises in any place over a seat, there will be a friendly fight there. However, in other places, elections will be fought in alliance, so there is no need to be confused. " In Fadnavis' hometown Nagpur, BJP won 108 seats during the 2017 civic polls. Daya Shankar Tiwari, city president of BJP said "We have set a target to cross the 120 mark in upcoming polls. We have done development work in the city and are confident that citizens will give us the mandate." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트, 지금 시작하세요 [자세히 보기] 임플란트 더 알아보기 Undo Regarding CM's remark on a united fight, Tiwari said, "We are definitely open to an alliance. Whoever is strong in a particular seat should fight. But then again, if there is a difference of opinion then we will go for a friendly fight." Tiwari said BJP's biggest achievement is handing over land ownership to leaseholders. "Those living in leasehold nazul lands were given ownership. Even in slums we have regularized the plots benefitting many poor people," said Tiwari. City MLA Krishna Khopde, whose East Nagpur constituency elects the maximum number of corporators for BJP said, "Our party will win big as people know about the development work undertaken by us. Everywhere in the country Nagpur is recognized as a major city where development is taking place at a rapid pace." He added that BJP has also fulfilled its promise on water supply. "In my constituency we have got rid of water tankers completely. All the time we are working on initiatives to alleviate water woes of people and have succeeded. You look at the civic infrastructure which has come up and the amount of development this city has witnessed in 11 years after PM Narendra Modi took charge at the Centre. It's all about the vision at the top, which then percolates down. Nitin Gadkari has become internationally renowned for his development work and Nagpur has benefited because of that."

Mahayuti to contest civic polls together, says Fadnavis

Akola: The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance will contest the coming local body elections in the state together, but there will be friendly fights where a tie-up does not materialise, CM Devendra Fadnavis said. Fadnavis was speaking to reporters here after launching irrigation and power generation projects. Elections to several municipal corporations and other local bodies including the BMC have been pending for the past three years. The state BJP president, working president and election committee of the party are authorized to take decisions related to the local bodies' elections, Fadnavis said. "We have decided to contest the polls as an alliance. There will be friendly fights wherever a tie-up does not work out," he said. The Ajit Pawar-led NCP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena are the two other members of the alliance. When asked about Prahar Janshakti Party leader Bachhu Kadu's hunger strike, Fadnavis said district guardian minister Chandrashekar Bawankule will speak to him. Kadu has been on a hunger strike for four days over demands related to farmers' issues. To a question on PM Narendra Modi inquiring about Sharad Pawar's health when he met MP and Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule during a meeting with all-party delegations which visited foreign countries to put forth India's stand after Operation Sindoor, Fadnavis said, "Humanity, sensitivity exist in politics. We are ideological adversaries, not enemies." State govt is stable and Mahayuti allies will stay together, he added.

2024 Maharashtra Assembly polls data: Congress to hold ‘torch march', demand probe into LoP Rahul's allegations on EC

The Maharashtra Congress on Thursday is set to hold a 'Mashal Morcha' (Torch March) across the state against the alleged 'theft of votes' in the recently conducted assembly elections. This development comes a week after Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, in his article in The Indian Express alleged electoral malpractices in the state assembly elections. Replying to Gandhi, the Election Commission of India denied any wrongdoing or malpractice in the conduct of the election. Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal will participate in the protest in Gadchiroli. All Congress leaders, MPs and legislators have been asked to participate in protests across the state. 'The BJP coalition government has come to power in the state by stealing votes in the assembly elections. Votes have been stolen with the help of the Election Commission and this vote theft is not being investigated. The credibility of the Election Commission is at stake and the democratic system is being attacked,' said Sapkal. He said that the state Congress will take out torch marches across the state on Thursday, to create awareness and demand an investigation into the scam in the assembly elections. Sapkal alleged that there is doubt about the voting percentage announced by the Election Commission. 'After the voting ended, the voters who declared 58 percent showed 66.5 percent the next day, an increase of 7.83 percent. This is a big scam. It is the duty of the Election Commission to conduct fair and transparent elections, but if there are clouds of suspicion on them, it is dangerous for democracy,' he said.
