Turkey's Celebi Case: From India revoking clearance to IndoThai replacing it at Mumbai airport — All we know so far

Mint18-05-2025
Turkey's Celebi Case: The Turkish firm, Çelebi Aviation, which used to operate the airport ground operations in nine airports across India, has now been removed from ground handling and cargo operations amid the rising calls to boycott Turkish goods and tourism.
In the last few days, Indians have been calling each other to boycott Turkish goods and tourism after the nation supported Pakistan over India after the Pahalgam terror attack and the Operation Sindoor, which gave rise to the India-Pakistan conflict.
Mumbai's airport operator, the Mumbai International Airport (MIAL), said that it has appointed IndoThai as its new ground handling operator to replace the Turkish firm on Saturday, reported multiple news portals.
IndoThai 'has been appointed as the interim ground handling provider at CSMIA for the next three months, effective immediately,' said MIAL, according to an Economic Times report. IndoThai currently operates nine airports across India.
This comes after the Union government, on 15 May 2025, revoked the security clearance of Çelebi Aviation.
'In the exercise of power conferred upon DG, BCAS, the security clearance in r/o Çelebi Airport Services India Pvt Limited is hereby revoked with immediate effect in the interest of national security,' according to the official notice.
The Delhi High Court on Monday, 19 May, will hear two pleas by the Turkish firm Celebi Airport Services India Pvt Ltd and another firm against the decision of the aviation regulator, reported the news agency PTI.
The aviation regulator cited the reason of in the 'interest of national security' for barring the company by revoking its security clearance.
Justice Sachin Datta of the Delhi High Court will hear the plea, which was filed on Friday, 16 May 2025. According to the official Civil Aviation data, the Turkish company was given permission and security clearance on 21 November 2022 to operate at Indian airports.
The Turkish firm Celebi Aviation on Saturday, 17 May 2025, said that it's 'fully cooperating' with the Indian authorities and adhering to the regulations after its ground handling and cargo warehouse operations were suspended over national security reasons.
'We are closely monitoring the situation and cooperating fully with the relevant authorities,' said the Turkish firm in an official statement cited in a Bloomberg report. 'We are following the process diligently and within the legal framework, in close cooperation with the relevant local authorities. To date, all our operations have been carried out in full compliance with regulations,' said Celebi.
Delhi airport on Thursday formally ended ties with the Turkish firm for its ground handling and cargo operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on the grounds of national security.
According to Mint's earlier report, Celebi Airport Services used to offer its services at nine Indian airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Kannur, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai.
Delhi airport is currently working with its other service providers, namely AISATS and the Bird Group, for all of its ground handling services after it severed its ties with Celebi.
Apart from Delhi, the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru also announced that it has terminated its ground handling concession agreement with Çelebi.
'We are coordinating the transition in collaboration with all existing aviation stakeholders and government authorities,' they said, according to Mint's earlier report.

Sonia Gandhi on poll roll before attaining citizenship: BJP

Sonia Gandhi (File photo) NEW DELHI: BJP on Wednesday sought to turn the tables on Congress over the latter's campaign against alleged "vote theft" by making the serious charge that Sonia Gandhi got herself enrolled twice as a voter without renouncing her Italian citizenship. "Sonia Gandhi's name entered the electoral rolls twice without meeting the basic citizenship requirement - first as an Italian citizen in 1980, and then again in 1983, months before she legally became a citizen of India. We are not even asking why it took her 15 years after marrying Rajiv Gandhi to accept Indian citizenship. If this isn't blatant electoral malpractice, what is?" said BJP IT department head Amit Malviya to counter Congress's claim that EC had facilitated BJP's victories by enrolling fake voters. On X, Malviya posted a copy of the electoral roll form of the official residence of then PM Indira Gandhi, claiming Sonia's name was added during the revision of rolls with Jan 1, 1980, as the qualifying date. . "Following an outcry in 1982, her name was deleted from the list only to reappear in 1983," he said. "In the fresh revision of the electoral rolls that year, Sonia Gandhi was listed at serial number 236 in polling station 140. The qualifying date for registration was Jan 1, 1983, but she was granted Indian citizenship only on April 30, 1983," Malviya added.

HC Full Bench disposes of plea against removal of flagpoles

1 2 Madurai: Taking into account that Supreme Court upheld the order of the single judge of Madras high court directing the removal of all flagpoles erected by political parties and organisations in public places across the state, a Full Bench of the court on Wednesday disposed of an appeal preferred by CPM state secretary P. Shanmugam. Earlier, the Full Bench directed the state to maintain status quo prevailing as of the date until further orders regarding removal of the flagpoles. It also directed the chief secretary to issue a public notification enabling parties and organisations willing to get impleaded in the appeal. On Wednesday, the Full Bench of Justices S M Subramaniam, R. Vijayakumar, and S. Sounthar took note of the fact that a person preferred a special leave petition before Supreme Court challenging the order passed by a single bench of HC, which ordered removal of all flagpoles from public places. Supreme Court dismissed the special leave petition. In view of the fact that the court confirmed the orders of a single bench, which was confirmed by a division bench of Madras HC, no further adjudication needs to be undertaken in respect of the grounds raised in the appeal filed before the Full Bench. The judges said it is for the parties to work out their remedy in the manner known to law, and disposed of the appeal. It was in January that Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan directed parties and organisations such as community, religion, and association to remove their flagpoles erected permanently at public places and land belonging to govt departments and civic bodies across the state. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Portugal Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. The govt shall frame rules for erection of flagpoles on private lands, he said. In March, a division bench of Justices J Nisha Banu and S Srimathy upheld the order. Subsequently, CPM state secretary Shanmugam filed a petition seeking to forbear the authorities from removing the party's flagpoles across the state. In June, Justice C Saravanan dismissed the petition citing the earlier order passed by a single bench in Jan, which was also upheld by a division bench. Challenging the same, Shanmugam preferred an appeal. Hearing the appeal, a division bench observed that since the single bench order passed in January was already confirmed by a coordinate division bench, it would not be proper on its part to pass any contra order. The judges directed the registry to place the papers before the chief justice of Madras HC to consider constituting a larger bench to decide this appeal. Subsequently, a Full Bench was constituted to hear the appeal. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
