Sabah Day 2025 to spotlight historical education, patriotism
KOTA KINABALU (Aug 15): The 2025 Sabah Day celebration will serve as a vital platform to strengthen understanding of Sabah's history.
Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan stated that this year's celebration will feature historical exhibitions, seminars and special reading materials to provide the public with opportunities to understand Sabah's journey to independence.
'This year, the event will take place on August 30 and 31 at Padang Merdeka, Kota Kinabalu.
'This year's exhibition is more comprehensive than previous ones, featuring books, documents and historical visual materials to help the community, especially the youth, better appreciate the state's history.
'Besides exhibitions, special seminars will discuss key events, state figures and Sabah's development in political, economic and social aspects.
'The celebration will also be enlivened by the Sabah Day Run, bringing together participants from all districts. All runners will gather at Padang Merdeka carrying the Sabah flag as a symbol of unity and pride on the culmination day.
'The run alone is expected to attract over 4,000 participants from various districts, while the total number of visitors throughout the celebration is projected to exceed 10,000,' he said after recording the Sabah Day Documentary and the Kami Bah Ini (KBI) programme at the Integrated Complex of the Ministry of Communications here today.
According to Jeffrey, other activities include district-level sports competitions, traditional food stalls and concerts featuring local artists and patriotic songs.
As chairman of the 2025 Sabah Day Celebration Main Committee, he noted that this year's celebration uniquely emphasizes historical and educational aspects.
'Sabah Day should not only be celebrated but also integrated into the school curriculum so our children can learn about the state's identity from their school days.
'I also call on the youth, if possible, to create songs themed around Sabah Day and Sabah Independence Day,' he added.
Jeffrey hopes the celebration will not only become a vibrant annual event but also a platform to reinforce historical heritage and build the spirit of patriotism among Sabahans.

Rigid rules: A repressive Merdeka celebration
COMMENT | The numerous and overly complex restrictions set by the Information Department under the Respecting National Symbols guidelines have turned what should be a direct and sincere expression of Malaysian patriotism into a heavy burden. Instead of inspiring unity, these extensive rules have created hesitation and fear among the rakyat, raising the question of whether such an atmosphere is truly the intended outcome for national unity. Merdeka celebrations should be a time for unity and the free expression of patriotic spirit. Yet rigid and conservative regulations have allowed certain groups to exploit the occasion for divisive campaigns to advance political agendas. This year's National Day risks becoming one of the most repressive in Malaysia's history, marked by disputes and restrictions, and stripped of the joy and sense of unity it should embody. Under the current guidelines, Malaysians are prohibited from...

Sabah launches eKahwin system to streamline Muslim marriage applications
Demonstration of the e-Perkahwinan portal. – Information Department photo KOTA KINABALU (Aug 15): The state government, through the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS), has launched the eKahwin system to simplify the marriage application process for Muslim couples in Sabah. Sabah Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Datuk Mohd Arifin Arif, stated that since the implementation of the eKahwin system on August 1, 1,782 prospective couples have registered as users within one week. 'The eKahwin system demonstrates how JHEAINS leverages technology to serve the community without compromising Shariah law, administrative integrity, or human values,' he said. 'Applicants no longer need to queue or take time off work just to submit documents. Everything can be done at their fingertips, except for special cases requiring further scrutiny such as determining the wali (marriage guardian), verifying lineage status, or validating identification documents,' he announced at the launch ceremony of the eKahwin System and FPX Payment Platform today. He added that integrating the FPX platform enables fast, secure and transparent online payment of service fees while reducing cash transaction risks and delays. 'This system ensures marriage procedures are more organized, systematic and accountable. After the marriage solemnization is registered, couples will receive a valid digital marriage certificate before the physical copy is issued. Its authenticity can be verified via the e-Validator app,' he explained. 'The launch of eKahwin and FPX is just the beginning of digitizing Islamic services in Sabah. We must continue innovating, strengthening data security, addressing shortcomings and listening to public feedback. Our vision is clear: to position Sabah as a leading state in digital transformation for Islamic marriage management.' Meanwhile, JHEAINS director Datuk Jumain Abdul Ghani shared that Thalassemia screening — a mandatory requirement for marriage applications — is still under the department's review and planning. Also present were Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin and Sabah Baitulmal Corporation chairman Datuk Dr Omar Raisul Assalam Syah Sulaiman Omar.
