Dockers reveal long-term Narkle blow after WAFL injury

Perth Now12-05-2025

Walyalup (Fremantle) recruit Quinton Narkle is set to miss at least two months of football after suffering a knee injury playing for Peel Thunder.
Narkle went down painfully during the first half of the WAFL clash against West Perth at Lane Group Stadium on Saturday and limped off in the hands of trainers.
Executive General Manager of Football Joe Brierty revealed the news was as bad as it looked, saying the former Geelong and Port Adelaide forward would miss at least six weeks of football.
'Following scans, we can confirm that Quinton has suffered an undisplaced fracture to the bone,' Brierty said.
'This will see Narks miss the next 6 - 8 weeks of football, but positively, he will avoid surgery, with confirmation that he has avoided damage to his ACL graft, which is great news.
'Since joining the Club in the SSP period at the end of last year, he has worked really hard to integrate into our program and get back to playing AFL footy. It's a disappointing setback for him.
'Our performance health team will support him through his rehab, and we look forward to seeing Narks' playing again later in the season.'
The 27-year-old made his Dockers debut in round seven as the substitute and booted his first goal for the Club in the Friday night loss to St Kilda in round eight.
However, after two appearances off the sub bench, he was dropped back to the WAFL.
It adds to the Club's injury woes as star big man Sean Darcy was subbed out of Walyalup's tight defeat to Collingwood at Optus Stadium on Thursday night with ice on his knee.
Darcy missed the start of the season with soft tissue injuries and has missed so many games in the last three seasons the Dockers sent the ruckman to Qatar to help get his body right for the vigours of AFL.
Veterans Nat Fyfe and Michael Walters are also yet to play a game in 2025 due to injuries, with neither appearing likely to return before the bye.
Fremantle will be known as Walyalup for Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

Former NBA star Cousins booted from Puerto Rico league

Former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins was suspended by a Puerto Rico basketball league and had his contract rescinded after igniting a brawl. The Baloncesto Superior Nacional League also fined Cousins $US4250 ($A6530), and he could be subject to another fine of $5570 ($A8560), according to the league. The incident occurred on Monday when Cousins was playing on the road for the Guaynabo Mets. "As an organisation, we strongly condemn any form of violence or provocation, whether on or off the field. Safety, respect and sportsmanship are non-negotiable values for this franchise," the Mets said in a news release. The situation began with Cousins exchanging words with a fan, before he grabbed his crotch while walking towards the courtside seats. Cousins then grabbed the fan's arm as things quickly escalated. Teammates tried to pull Cousins away and other fans began to hurl insults at the American. After being ejected, Cousins was doused by liquids as he left the floor. Security tackled him at one point to hold him back from trying to get into the stands. Cousins, 34, was averaging 18.2 points and 9.0 rebounds while playing in the top pro basketball league in Puerto Rico for the second time. He also played in the league in 2023. He hasn't played in the NBA since the 2021-22 season. Cousins was a four-time All-Star in 11 seasons, but his career was derailed by two major injuries. In January 2018, he sustained an achilles tendon injury while playing with the New Orleans Pelicans. After returning to play 30 games for the Golden State Warriors the following season, he tore the ACL in his left knee in August 2019 as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and missed the entire season. Cousins played for seven NBA teams, his longest tenure with the Sacramento Kings from 2010-17. He finished third in Rookie of the Year balloting in 2011 after being the fifth overall pick out of Kentucky. Overall, Cousins averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds in 654 NBA games (561 starts).

Kiraz called in as Blues star sidelined from training

NSW have called Jacob Kiraz into camp as cover for Brian To'o, with the Penrith winger battling hamstring soreness seven days out from State of Origin II. Blues officials insisted on Wednesday that Kiraz's call up was only precautionary, with NSW medical staff keen to keep To'o off his feet on Thursday. To'o is believed to have pulled up sore from Penrith's win over Wests Tigers on Sunday, and has already battled two hamstring injuries earlier this year. NSW are confident the Samoan winger will be fine to train on Saturday, before the team flies to Perth on Sunday and attempts to wrap up the series next Wednesday. The Blues have an opposed session against The Entrance's team from Newcastle's rugby league competition on Thursday, and want a natural winger to feature in the game. Kiraz has not previously featured in a NSW squad, but the Canterbury flyer was favoured to win a spot on the wing for game one before a calf injury ruled him out. NSW do have other outside backs in camp with Brisbane centre Kotoni Staggs and Penrith winger Tom Jenkins brought in as extra training bodies earlier in the week. Matt Burton is also in the team as 18th man having previously played as a centre, but Kiraz is clearly the top option if To'o has further setbacks. To'o's fitness will be key to the Blues' hopes of winning in Perth, given he has been the best winger in the NRL for the past five years and a leader for early-set yardage. NSW have already suffered one blow ahead of Origin II, with Warriors prop Mitchell Barnett ruled out a fortnight ago when he suffered a season-ending ACL rupture. Fired-up Fremantle chief unhappy with Demons' actions

Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick has taken a swipe at Melbourne's leaders over public comments that fuelled AFL trade speculation around star ruckman Luke Jackson. Demons coach Simon Goodwin last month signalled his strong interest in luring 2021 premiership player Jackson back to the club. Goodwin said "we'd certainly be interested" if Jackson, who is contracted to the Dockers until the end of 2029, became available. Dees captain Max Gawn also hinted at Jackson's possible return in a radio interview, but later apologised for his comments, which he said were intended as a joke. The speculation around Jackson - whose partner, former Australian netball star Kelsey Brown, is from Victoria - has come amid rumours around Melbourne star Kysaiah Pickett's possible interest in joining Fremantle. But Pickett is now reportedly set to stay put, with the Demons said to have tabled a monster nine-year contract extension. Garlick on Wednesday dismissed the suggestion of a Pickett-Jackson trade and hit back at Melbourne. "To borrow an infamous line from Will Smith, I think Melbourne should take our players' names out of their mouths," Garlick said on SEN radio. "It's interesting. Hearing the captain and coach speak specifically on Luke was really disappointing. "It's not a practice that we engage in, but that's their prerogative." Jackson has starred for Fremantle this season, splitting his time in the ruck, midfield and forward-line. "He's in phenomenal form," Garlick said. "He's an unbelievable character around the footy club in terms of his enthusiasm, his infectious nature, he's a great teammate and we just love having him being a part of the club. "He's clearly signed for a long period of time, he loves the footy club, and you can see that in both his actions and his words. "It (letting Jackson go) is not even a consideration for us ... he's a cornerstone of our club for a long time to come." In March, Jackson said he "definitely will" be a Fremantle player long-term and ruled out a move back to Victoria when asked directly about the prospect by reporters. Garlick also brushed off trade rumours around 21-year-old midfielder Neil Erasmus, who is out of contract. "We see him again as a really important part of the midfield," Garlick said. Meanwhile, Fremantle youngsters Isaiah Dudley and Aiden Riddle have both signed one-year contract extensions to remain on the club's rookie list until the end of next season. Exciting small forward Dudley has kicked eight goals in nine games this season, including two as the starting substitute, while ruck-forward Riddle is yet to debut.
