Bobbili Veena selected under ODOP scheme
District collector Dr B R Ambedkar travelled to New Delhi to receive the award on behalf of the district. The ODOP award ceremony is scheduled to take place on Monday, July 14, at the Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
The Bobbili Veena, traditionally known as the Saraswati Veena, is famed for its distinctive tonal quality and craftsmanship. Often gifted as a souvenir, a miniature version of the veena has been a customary presentation in various events.
It has been showcased and gifted not only in India but also in international forums. Notably, Bobbili Veena-themed postage stamps and coins have also been released, further highlighting its cultural significance.
These veenas are also being exported to other states and countries. They have been displayed at major events like the G-20 summit held in Delhi and the Global Summit in Visakhapatnam. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was reportedly impressed upon viewing a Bobbili Veena. The instrument has already received Geographical Indication (GI) status from the Government of India.
Gollapalli village, near Bobbili town, is renowned for the craftsmanship of veena-making. Recognized as a rare handicraft, this art has sustained over 300 families in the village for more than a century. Although veena production also takes place in Vadada, Badangi Mandal, the instruments are still identified as Bobbili Veenas.
These veenas are primarily made using jackfruit and sampangi wood. In light of the increasing demand and scarcity of suitable wood, the Andhra Pradesh government has recently taken the initiative to promote large-scale cultivation of jackfruit trees in the Uttarandhra region.
With its inclusion under the ODOP scheme, the prominence and popularity of the Bobbili Veena are expected to grow even further, bringing more recognition to the artisans and their exceptional craft.

In a post on X, Patil said the 'milestone" reflects the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission and the transformative power of grassroots governance in building clean villages. 'Under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister @narendramodi Sir, India has achieved a historic milestone, 80% of our villages are now ODF Plus Model villages," he said. 'This is not just a statistic; it reflects the strength of janbhagidari, the success of Swachh Bharat Mission and the transformative power of grassroots governance in building clean, healthy, and sustainable villages," he added. The minister called on the people to continue on the path of 'Swachhata (cleanliness) to Sampannata (prosperity)." The Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), also celebrating the achievement on social media, said the ODF plus model villages go beyond eliminating open defecation. These villages are also managing solid and liquid waste effectively and displaying visible cleanliness along with Swachhata-themed messaging, it said on X. An ODF plus model village is one that sustains its open defecation-free (ODF) status while ensuring effective waste management systems are in place, marking a deeper and more sustainable level of sanitation progress. This milestone is a part of Phase II of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), which was launched in 2020 to focus on sustaining ODF status and improving sanitation and waste management in rural India. Guntur secures top honours in Swachh Survekshan rankings
Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has made history by securing top national honours in the Swachh Survekshan rankings, District Collector S. Nagalakshmi announced on Friday. She congratulated the civic body for its exceptional performance, which placed Guntur among the 23 cities in India recognised as 'Super Swachh League Cities 2024–25.' Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu and Additional Commissioner Challa Obulesu presented the award and memento to the Collector at her camp office. The Collector credited the achievement to the collective efforts of officials, public representatives, and sanitation workers. She expressed confidence that the recognition would further motivate the city to enhance sanitation and build a healthier urban environment. Meanwhile, GMC Commissioner and Additional Commissioner appreciated the District Collector's role in helping Guntur secure national-level recognition under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative for Guntur Sannam Mirchi.

Gita Shlokas To Be Recited Daily In Haryana Schools' Morning Assemblies: Education Board Directive
In a significant move to promote spiritual and moral education among students, the Haryana School Education Board has directed all schools across the state to begin their daily morning prayer assemblies with the recitation of Bhagavad Gita shlokas. The initiative was formally launched today at the Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Lab School, located on the Board's campus in Bhiwani. Board Chairman Dr. Pawan Kumar, who led the event, emphasised the spiritual and cultural relevance of the initiative, stating: "The recitation of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita shlokas in morning prayers has now been implemented across all schools in Haryana. The objective is to help our coming generations-upon whom the future of the nation rests-understand the deep spiritual and philosophical wisdom hidden in the Gita, and imbibe it in their conduct. We wish to see a cultured generation that embodies ideal values and contributes towards fulfilling our Hon'ble Prime Minister's dream of making India a Vishwaguru (world leader)." He further added: "As I have mentioned earlier, the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita is essentially the manual of life. It teaches us how our character should be, how we should behave in society, and what our responsibilities are." Students recited Gita verses in the presence of a Gita scholar, Swami Gyananand, who joined the ceremony virtually and extended his blessings to the students. Dr. Vinod Anchal, District President of the Health Project under Shri Krishna Kripa Samiti, said that the recitation of the Gita will help instil values in children, connect them with spirituality, and keep them away from substance abuse. He said the teachings of the Gita would shape children's behaviour and way of life in a positive and meaningful direction. He added: "We all want the children of our society to become nation-builders-free from addiction and crime. The knowledge of the Gita will inspire not just the students, but society and the nation as a whole. It will guide us toward building a proud and glorious India-one that can once again be known as the golden bird." The Board's decision has sparked statewide interest and is expected to initiate wider discussions on the role of spiritual teachings in modern education.
