Recovering 1MDB assets still a tough process, says Azam
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the complex nature of the 1MDB case makes international cooperation crucial.
KUALA LUMPUR : Repatriating assets linked to the 1MDB scandal remains a difficult process as many of these stolen assets are located overseas, says Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki.
'This is not something easy. Many of the stolen assets are abroad. Without help from certain experts, it will take us even longer to recover the money.
'There's still a lot of repatriation we need to do,' Azam said at a press conference here today.
The MACC chief commissioner said the complex nature of the case made international cooperation crucial, especially when it came to tracing and retrieving funds that were siphoned into multiple countries.
'It's very messy. There's a lot of tracing, analysis, and cooperation with foreign authorities involved. And we don't have connections in every country.'
Azam admitted that the commission used to work in silos but said it was moving towards stronger collaboration with other agencies and experts.
He said the formation of an accounting fraud working group was a key step towards establishing inter-agency collaboration.
Asked whether this framework would support efforts to recover 1MDB assets, Azam replied: 'Yes, it's heading in that direction.'
Separately, Azam described his reappointment as MACC chief commissioner as a 'great responsibility' and an opportunity to push forward reforms and the anti-graft agenda.
'I'm also committed to improving Malaysia's position in the corruption perceptions index. The launch of the working group is one of the concrete steps towards that goal.'
Azam said that methods of corruption had evolved over time, with perpetrators now using more sophisticated techniques to hide their actions.
This includes falsifying business documents, using proxy companies, and disguising bribes as corporate operating costs
'What's more concerning is that almost all of these fraudulent tactics pass through accounting and auditing systems. If these systems lack transparency or are run by individuals with weak integrity, they not only fail to function as gatekeepers, but can become platforms to conceal wrongdoing and act as enablers.'
Azam said Malaysia lost an estimated RM277 billion to corruption between 2018 and 2023 – an average of RM55 billion a year – describing the amount as 'very alarming'.
'A 2023 study by think tank Emir Research, which also looked at data from various public reports, estimated that total losses reached RM4.5 trillion over a 26-year period from 1997 to 2022.'

‘Water rushed in within seconds': Survivor describes deadly Tanjung Harapan boat accident
KLANG, June 7 — 'The incident happened very fast; the boat we were on capsized and filled with water before sinking,' recounted Chang Yan Qin Alvin, 17, who survived the overturned boat incident that claimed three lives in the waters of Tanjung Harapan yesterday. Chang is one of six individuals aboard the boat who survived, while two other victims are still missing. According to Chang, the tragedy occurred when the boat they were in, which was undergoing a test run, made an U-turn about 30 minutes after departing from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC). 'The incident happened very quickly when the relatively fast-moving boat suddenly overturned, and in less than 10 seconds, water had entered all compartments of the boat. 'The situation inside the boat became chaotic, but I saved myself by trying to swim out before managing to sit on top of the overturned boat,' he said when met by reporters at the search and rescue location, Selangor Maritime Headquarters, in Tanjung Harapan today. Chang said he could only scream for help after realising other passengers were not visible and after about five minutes of holding on to the boat, another boat approached and rescued him. He said the fishermen in the boat then helped contact the authorities for assistance. 'I understand that this was the second test run for the boat, and before this, the boat was found to be in overall good condition,' he said, expressing sadness over the heartbreaking tragedy. In the incident around 5pm, three individuals, including a child, died, while a married couple is still missing. The victims are three-year-old Darren Gan, Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while the missing victims have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. — Bernama

Project engineer killed in four-vehicle crash on Jalan Lipis-Merapoh in Pahang
KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 — A 34-year-old project engineer died in a four-vehicle collision involving a trailer and three cars at Km30 of Jalan Lipis-Merapoh near Padang Tengku, Lipis early this morning. The New Straits Times reported that the victim, Mohd Hafiz Mohd Ghazali, died at the scene of the 3am crash. 'Initial investigations revealed that Hafiz had lost control of his Volkswagen Jetta before crashing into the oncoming trailer,' said Lipis police chief Superintendent Ismail Man. 'The impact of the crash caused the trailer to graze two other vehicles. Hafiz died at the scene and his remains were taken to Lipis Hospital,' he said in a statement today. Police said the trailer, driven by a 41-year-old man, was travelling from Kelantan to Selangor. The three cars were heading in the opposite direction from Kuala Lumpur to Kelantan. None of the other drivers were injured in the crash. Police are investigating the case under reckless or dangerous driving provisions. Ismail urged witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to come forward to assist in the investigation. Several hours earlier, five people — including four siblings — were killed in a separate accident at Km7 of Jalan Jerantut-Maran in Jerantut.
