Brave 300 rebuilt Bhuj runway in just 72 hours in 1971

Vadodara/Bhuj: On the night of Dec 8 during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, a squadron of jets from the Pakistan Air Force dropped 64 bombs on the Indian Air Force (IAF) airstrip in Bhuj, Gujarat.
Damaged in eight places, the runway was rendered useless, leaving Indian warplanes no way to take off as the fighting peaked. That was when 300 courageous women from Madhapar, a village 5km from Bhuj, decided to step out. In just 72 hours, the women rebuilt the airfield which had been raided 35 times in 14 days, being struck by 92 bombs and 22 rockets. "In just three days, they rebuilt the Bhuj airstrip and made it operational again. Making Bhuj operational was vital as it was an important airbase. The story of these 300 women, the 'Jhansi Ki Ranis of Madhapar', who worked fearlessly amid continual bombardment must be included in our history books," said retired Wing Commander Vijay Karnik, the real-life hero of the film 'Bhuj'. As markets in Bhuj were closed on Saturday amid the rising tensions between India and Pakistan, Karnik, who was the base commander in 1971, said Pakistan had planned to destroy Bhuj airfield to isolate and capture Kutch. "From the Bhuj sector, we were striking at Karachi. The war was at its peak. Sawai Bhawani Singh, the Maharaja of Jaipur, who was commanding the 10 Para Brigade (special forces), also came to Bhuj after capturing half of Sindh province," he said. "They (Pakistan) started bombing from the very beginning... from Dec 3 onwards. On Dec 6, we shot down their aircraft over Bhuj, which further rattled them. On the night of Dec 8, they planned a concentrated attack. The PAF's B57 aircraft dropped 64 bombs. Each plane carried eight 1,000-pounder bombs," he said. "Our runway was severely damaged. The bombing was such that everybody in Bhuj town started evacuating the town," he said. "Even the contractor and labourers, who would repair smaller damage earlier, had fled. We put the repair machinery and material 200 feet to the side of the runway, but no one dared go near the strip," he said. "It was then that these 300 women from Madhapar, armed with nothing but patriotism, took up the practically impossible task of repairing the airstrip," he said, adding that the women were briefed on how to take shelter during bomb raids and hide under bushes. "They were daring to adhere to the instructions. They remade the runway very quickly, making our base operational again," he said. Seventy-three-year-old Harji Madhaparia, who was 19 then, says he was at a college function when he heard the sounds of low-flying jets. "We thought they were IAF jets. It was only after a few hours that we realized the airport had been bombed," said Madhaparia, who had enrolled in the Home Guard and was assigned patrol duty in Madhapar.

Leopard may have left Pune airport premises, say forest officials

Pune: Senior officials of the state forest department have said the leopard first sighted on the premises of the Pune airport on April 28 has not been seen after May 15 and may have left the area. The leopard confirmed as a fully grown male by the forest department was sighted multiple times at the airside, but could not be captured, chief conservator of forests, Pune, Praveen NR told TOI. "There is a chance it is not present in the area. Our teams are vigilant nevertheless and we will resume our search operations immediately if it is seen again." On April 28, the leopard was seen first at 7am and then at 8pm near the runway. Many flyers seated in their flights had made videos of the animal sitting calmly near the runway. The sighting had triggered a massive search and capture operation. The animal was clever enough to elude the authorities for more than a month since then. "We stopped the search after launch of Operation Sindoor in early May. We resumed after the op was over, but the animal couldn't be sighted. We are in touch with authorities of IAF and Pune airport. We have requested that they let us know if the leopard is seen again so that we can take action," the official added. In the week leading to May 17, the forest department had intensified its efforts to rescue the leopard. The animal couldn't be captured in any of the camera traps, but some IAF officials told forest department officials that they had spotted it on May 15. "The animal has not been seen since then. We removed the many trap cameras and cages during Operation Sindoor. It is difficult to say where the animal has gone," another forest official said. Authorities have said the leopard was surviving on rodents and stray dogs while it roamed the premises spread over 3,500 acres. When the leopard was spotted first, the IAF spokesperson had said, "There was only one report of the leopard sighting before April 28 and it was not corroborated. We had informed forest officials, who visited the location but couldn't find any trail leading to the leopard." Pune airport officials said they are on alert. "Safety instructions on the leopard stand even now and a watch is kept. Any sighting will be communicated to the forest department. We cannot comment further since the airside is under IAF," a senior airport official told TOI. Meanwhile, Vatsala Khurana, a resident of Marvel Piazza located close to the airport, told TOI, "We were scared when the leopard was spotted in April and a lot of precautions were taken. All that is behind us now and there is no fear. Life is back to normal." A resident of another housing society located at close proximity to the airport boundary wall agreed. "We do discuss the leopard at times and wonder where it went. We have no updates from any official. We stay alert even though there is no fear any more," he said, requesting anonymity.

9 beach stretches need anti-erosion measures, overall status of Goa not alarming: Govt panel

Panaji: A panel formed to discuss sand erosion in Goa has highlighted that nine beach stretches require urgent intervention. State govt will take one beach stretch as a pilot project, using sand motor technology to protect the coastline from sand erosion. Information was provided by Chennai's National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management, National Institute of Ocean Technology, and National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), as well as Isro. Discussions and presentations focused on the evolution trends of erosion provided by the respective institutes. According to NCCR, Morjim beach is accreting (growing by accumulation). NCCR suggested sharing the geolocation details of potential areas of interest (the nine locations) for their verification. The Netherlands-based company Deltares, which is engaged by state govt to evaluate the causes of erosion, emphasised defining goals, scope, and role of the organisation with the stakeholders to finalise the study area. The satellite imagery for the 1985-2020 period shows that erosion was noticed at Querim, Mandrem, and Morjim, although Morjim seems stable now. Further, in South Goa, the area between Velsao and Benaulim seems to have undergone accretion as well as erosion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? Palolem also seems to have natural erosion. During the meeting, it was suggested that the potential areas of interest include Morjim, Anjuna, and the larger erosion areas from Colva to Cavelossim. It was also determined that erosion was not alarming along the Goa coastline, which is a positive sign. The experts said the problem will not require major interventions and can be tackled with natural solutions, which are more feasible for Goa than for other stretches of the Indian coast. To select an area for action, its physical situation, erosion, flooding risk, as well as the site's economic value have to be considered. The committee discussed soft and hard measures to mitigate erosion. The soft measures include beach nourishment, shoreface nourishment, and sand motor (mega nourishment). The hard measures include seawalls, revetments (protective shields for beach-saving structures) and groynes (low, sturdy walls). Gipson Miranda from the WRD suggested that South Goa beaches like Velsao, Varca, Colva, and Mobor combat erosion. Some anti-erosion measures were put in place at Betalbatim beach a few years ago. Experts said the beach requires immediate restoration measures.
