Former rugby player to take on world-record swim with Scottish Canals

FORMER flanker for Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby Iain Sinclair has allied with Scottish Canals in hopes of becoming the first person to swim the full length of the Caledonian Canal.
The 48-year-old aims to tackle and overcome the full 60 miles of the Canal, including 29 locks, starting on September 15 and completing the challenge within 10 days.
He is raising awareness for three charities that hold a personal significance to him: Crohn's & Colitis UK, British Heart Foundation, and mental health charity Mikeysline.
Sinclair said: 'After some research, I discovered no-one had ever swum the full length of the Caledonian Canal, from sea to sea across the Highlands of Scotland.
'It's long, cold water, and logistically quite tricky.
'Swimming was always the hardest part of the triathlon for me, heavy rugby player legs and the nickname 'Sinky' says it all, so anything that involved swimming would by default, be a challenge.
'I thought it might be fun to build a small team and create our own wee bit of history, perhaps inspire others and raise money for great causes close to us in the process.'
He has faced significant health challenges. Diagnosed with indeterminate colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, he underwent major life-changing surgery in 2013 to remove his colon and another operation to reverse the stoma and form an internal pouch using his remaining small intestine.
Two years later, determined not to be defined by illness, he completed an Ironman triathlon alongside his friend Colin Maguire, raising funds for Crohn's & Colitis UK in the process.
In 2024, Maguire died of a sudden heart attack – and Sinclair also lost Jenny Hastings, the wife of his friend and former Watsonians and Edinburgh Rugby teammate Scott Hastings.
He is raising money for the British Heart Foundation and Mikeysline in their memory.
Claire Maguire, wife to Colin, in support of Sinclair, said: 'It means the world to me and my boys that Iain is taking on this open water challenge in memory of Colin and other special friends.
'Iain's challenge will raise vital funds for the British Heart Foundation, a cause very close to my heart.'
Also backing Sinclair is former teammate Scott Hastings, who said: 'It's with huge admiration that Iain is embarking on this amazing challenge in memory of my wife Jenny.
'I am delighted that Iain has chosen the mental health charity, Mikeysline, one of the three benefitting charities of this groundbreaking challenge.
'I look forward to being part of Iain's support team as he takes on this amazing feat.'
Sinclair went on: 'I'm genuinely humbled to have the support and input of a hugely experienced and capable core group of people, along with the amazing support from our partners at Scottish Canals.
'From fitness and safety experts to friends, mentors, and family, it's been a shared effort from the start.
'I'm especially grateful for the support of my wife and our three children, the ones I hope to make proud above all.
'We're going to give this everything we've got.'

Thousands bike, swim and run through Ottawa for Ironman triathlon

Thousands of triathletes ran, cycled and swam across Ottawa Sunday as the city played host to the Ironman Canada-Ottawa competition for the first time. Toronto's Luke Evans was the first to cross the finish line, completing his triathlon in eight hours, 40 minutes and 22 seconds. "Honestly, it's a dream come true," Evans said afterward. "I knew I was going to be in the running for this — maybe top 15, top 20 — but to finish first? It's just surreal. I just never believed this was going to happen. It's incredible." Aliisa Heiskanen of Gatineau, Que., was the fastest woman, finishing the course with a final time of 9:32:46. About 3,000 athletes registered for the race, which began with a 3.8-kilometre swim in the Ottawa River near Britannia Beach, followed by a 180-kilometre bike ride along the city's parkways and a 42.2-kilometre run through the downtown core. Athletes had to battle not just the race course and their own bodies but also the conditions, as Ottawa was under an air quality advisory due to widespread smoke from wildfires. The event is set to be back in Ottawa again in 2026.

Ben is a Hall star at England Athletic champs

It has been another busy week for Horwich RMI Harriers. Starting with track, England Athletics' U20 championships took place at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham 25-27 July. Club runner Benjamin Hall took an excellent bronze medal in the 3000m steeple chase in a time of 9mins 17secs. On the same weekend in Leeds the city hosted what became only the fourth city in the UK to host the full Ironman in its classic format of 3.8km swim, 180km bike and full marathon distance of 42.2kms. The course is a two-lap swim of waterloo lake in Rounday Park, followed by a bike ride. To finish off there are four loops of Rounday park and community streets. Two red vests took on this mighty endeavour with James Scott-Farrington having a superb race to finish 10th and Ryan Snee despite experiencing mechanical troubles 27th overall. Showing the club's versatility across multi-disciplines we move onto fell running with the Lee Mill Fell Race. A classic summer evening fell-running event set within the Rossendale Valley in Lancashire that is held annually by Rossendale Harriers. A BM category event (medium ascent and medium distance) the 10.7km with roughly 1,115ft of climbing the race starts at Stubbylee Park, Bacup and the route winds through decommissioned quarries and tussocky moorland. Club fell runner captain Dan Gilbert had a great race finishing just off the podium places with a 4th (1st vet 50) in a time of 51:16. Staying with the off-road theme, two club ultra runners Nick Leigh and Jonathon Bruton competed in the Lakeland 50. Part of the Ultra Tour of the Lake District, the Lakeland 50 covers the second half of the Lakeland 100 route, offering a long distance 50-mile challenge across Lake District terrain. Though shorter than the 100-mile event, it's no pushover with a reputation as one of Europe's toughest ultra-trail races: demanding nearly 3,000 m of ascent and run over unmarked trails requiring robust navigation skills. Leigh finished a superb 12th in 8:42:29 and Bruton in 38th (9:37:34). In the round-up of park-runs Red Vests were all over the country and world this week. A staggering 725 park-runners took part at the hilly Heaton Park, making his way to the front was club stalwart, Marcus Taylor settling for a top 10 finish in a time of 18:42, followed by Nick Kelly 21st (19:55), Sandra Kelly 113th (24:08) and Tony Hesketh 301st (28:58). Continuing his travails across the border was Brendan Bolland at Aberdeen 205th (27:57). Richard O'Reilly was 1st Vet55 at Bolton placing 7th in a course PB time of 21:30. Mark Seddon and Andrew Storey were 41st (25:39) and 96th (29:38) respectively. In another large crowd of 671 park runners at Eden Project Mark Kmiec was 65th (22:35) and Angela Greene 342nd (32:23). Joe Mercer had a stellar run at Marple claiming victory in 17:16. The Taylors, Abigail and Florence, ran together and finished 245th (34:16) and 246th (34:20) at Seaton. Perennial favourite Witton Park saw Paul Murray take 91st (43:04). With summer holidays in full flow the ever popular and challenging Haigh Hall could only field two Harriers in the ranks - Jason Middleton finishing 52nd (25:54) and Gillian Smith 214th (36:16). He must have entered the course as Rob Jackson repeated a run at Sale Water Park finishing in the podium positions (3rd) with a sub 19 time of 18:48. At the Ford Parkrun, Chris Charnley took 18th place (22:07). A 'smaller' crowd of 482 runners were at Peel where Louis Yates was 84th (22:56) and Steve Jackson 412th (34:08). The increasingly popular Worden parkrun saw nearly 300 runners with Gordon Stone tantalisingly close to a sub-30, finishing 185th in 30:36. Whilst husband Jason was enjoying the delights of Wigan, is wife and son opted for something more exotic. Toby was first finisher at Presint 18 in Kuala Lumpur. Gracious in victory Middleton turned down the winner's prize of the oft banned in public spaces and extremely pungent Durian fruit basket. Victory running in the family with Janet victorious in the women's vet 55 category.
