2 MACC officers, ex-officer freed of robbing Chinese businessman
KUALA LUMPUR : The sessions court here freed two Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers and a former officer on charges of robbing a Chinese businessman four years ago.
Judge Izralizam Sanusi held that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against officers Haffiz Radzi and Fahmee Nor as well as former officer Azwan Asli.
The three were accused of committing a gang robbery on Kun Gao on Dec 10, 2021 of RM952,690 and 1,225 yuan in cash, as well as a luggage bag and a Louis Vuitton bag at the businessman's home in Jalan Ampang.
The court said that the trio did not intimidate the victim as they were there to investigate the Chinese national for money laundering.
'The victim told the court he was not afraid (of the three men) as he had not committed any wrongdoing.
'There was also no evidence that the victim was threatened with any guns by the three men, although he claimed that one of them carried a gun in his backpack,' Izralizam said, adding that the existence of the alleged gun was not proven.
Deputy public prosecutor Nor Aisyah Zanyuin appeared for the prosecution while lawyer Dzulkifli Ahmad represented the three men. Lawyer Phyllia Lim held a watching brief for the Chinese man.
Dzulkifli later told reporters that they were grateful for the court's decision.

Bukit Aman task force takes over probe into Zara Qairina's death
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — A special nine-member task force from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been deployed to Sabah to take over the investigation into Zara Qairina Mahathir's case. The AGC stated that there is a need for further investigation to be carried out by PDRM to ensure that all aspects of the case can be thoroughly examined. The exhumation of the 13-year-old's body at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery, Kampung Mesapol was done on Saturday, and subsequently transported to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. The remains were reburied at the same cemetery early this morning. Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17. The student had been taken to the hospital after being found severely injured and unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar at 4am on July 16. — Bernama

Body of Myanmar ship crewman who fell into Saratok river found, partially eaten by aquatic animals
SARATOK, Aug 11 — The body of a Myanmar crew member who fell into Sungai Krian last Friday has been found at Lubuk Petan, Kampung Kupang, here. The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre said in a statement that the body of the victim, Thu Htoo Aung, 20, was found in an incomplete state. 'At 12.23pm today, the operation team led by Nasir Drahman received information from villagers who had found a floating body in the Lubuk Petan river,' the statement said. It added that firemen and police personnel brought the body to a nearby jetty for identification. 'Police confirmed that the body was that of the missing crew member. When found, only the lower half of the body, from the waist to the feet, remained, believed to be due to bites from aquatic animals,' it said. The search and rescue operation for the victim was called off at 1.40pm. The victim, who was wearing brown trousers and short rubber boots, was reported to have fallen into the river from the vessel Moi Soon 2, which was moored at Wharf Batu Pekan, Saratok, on August 8, at about 9.30am. — Bernama pic

No one will be spared if bullying or criminal conduct found in UTM Palapes cadet's death, says higher education minister
SEMENYIH, Aug 11 — The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has assured that no individual will be protected if investigations into the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin uncover elements of bullying or criminal conduct. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the special committee investigating the 22-year-old Reserve Officer Training Unit (Palapes) cadet's death is expected to complete its report soon. 'I have directed UTM to take all necessary measures and fully cooperate with the investigation. There will be no attempt to shield anyone if wrongdoing is found,' he told reporters after visiting Syamsul Haris' mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, at her home here today. Also present was UTM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim. Zambry also noted that priority should be given to expediting the committee's report while ensuring that the family's concerns are addressed. Syamsul Haris, a second-semester Bachelor of Cyber Security student and the eldest of three siblings, died under unclear and suspicious circumstances while undergoing Palapes training at the Army Combat Training Centre (Pulada) in Ulu Tiram, Johor. He began training on July 26, which was scheduled to end on August 3. Earlier, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced the formation of a joint investigation committee comprising the Ministries of Defence, Higher Education and Home Affairs. The family has called for a transparent and fair investigation, including a second autopsy, following allegations by Ummu Haiman Bee that her son's body showed bruises and injuries consistent with physical assault rather than a seizure. 'I want a transparent investigation. There were wounds on his chest, as if he was stabbed or struck with an object. His eyes were bruised. I strongly believe there was foul play, that he was beaten, tortured and assaulted until he died,' she said.
