No one will be spared if bullying or criminal conduct found in UTM Palapes cadet's death, says higher education minister
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the special committee investigating the 22-year-old Reserve Officer Training Unit (Palapes) cadet's death is expected to complete its report soon.
'I have directed UTM to take all necessary measures and fully cooperate with the investigation. There will be no attempt to shield anyone if wrongdoing is found,' he told reporters after visiting Syamsul Haris' mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, at her home here today.
Also present was UTM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim.
Zambry also noted that priority should be given to expediting the committee's report while ensuring that the family's concerns are addressed.
Syamsul Haris, a second-semester Bachelor of Cyber Security student and the eldest of three siblings, died under unclear and suspicious circumstances while undergoing Palapes training at the Army Combat Training Centre (Pulada) in Ulu Tiram, Johor. He began training on July 26, which was scheduled to end on August 3.
Earlier, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced the formation of a joint investigation committee comprising the Ministries of Defence, Higher Education and Home Affairs.
The family has called for a transparent and fair investigation, including a second autopsy, following allegations by Ummu Haiman Bee that her son's body showed bruises and injuries consistent with physical assault rather than a seizure.
'I want a transparent investigation. There were wounds on his chest, as if he was stabbed or struck with an object. His eyes were bruised. I strongly believe there was foul play, that he was beaten, tortured and assaulted until he died,' she said.
She also urged that the family's lawyer, Datuk Naran Singh, be included in the ministry's investigation committee. — Bernama

Lorry driver pleads not guilty to trying to kill cop by running him over in KL
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — A lorry driver pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to attempting to kill a policeman by running him over with a four-wheel drive vehicle, causing injuries. Muhammad Farhan Baharudin, 34, was charged with committing the offence against Corporal Mohamad Sallehin Ab Rahman, 35, resulting in the victim suffering an abrasion wound on his right knee, bruising on his right elbow and bruising on the right lower chest wall — injuries which could have been fatal. The offence was allegedly committed at the Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Expressway (AKLEH) exit to Jalan Tun Razak at 9.05am on August 8 this year. The charge, under Section 307 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine, or up to 20 years' imprisonment if injury is caused, upon conviction. Judge Izralizam Sanusi allowed bail at RM8,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to report to a nearby police station once a month. The court set October 6 for mention. Deputy public prosecutor Faizah Khalilah Zaberi appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Mohd Fikah Sanusi represented the accused. — Bernama

Sept hearing in High Court for Tuan Ibrahim's RM2.3b defamation suit against Rafizi over flood mitigation project
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — The High Court here will hear the defamation suit filed by former environment and water minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man against former economy minister Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli over six days in September, beginning Sept 8. The suit, filed on Nov 17, 2022, relates to statements allegedly defamatory concerning the approval of several projects, including a flood mitigation project, awarded to a company. Lawyer Yusfarizal Yussoff, representing Tuan Ibrahim, said Judge Datuk Aliza Sulaiman has set Sept 8, 9, 10, 11, 29, and 30 for the trial. This was also confirmed by lawyer Nik Zarith Nik Moustpha, representing Mohd Rafizi. Neither of the two former ministers was present at today's proceedings, which were conducted in chambers. In his statement of claim, Tuan Ibrahim alleged that Rafizi made defamatory statements against him at two press conferences at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya, which were streamed live on the defendant's YouTube account, on Jan 7 and 9, 2022. The statements allegedly implied that he was involved in approving a project worth RM2 billion for the Sungai Langat flood mitigation project, as well as a sewage treatment plant and sewerage pipe network projects in Kinta and Petaling Jaya, bringing the total value to more than RM2.3 billion. — Bernama
