WASHINGTON, Aug 13 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will visit the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday to unveil its 2025 honorees for artistic excellence and tout a major renovation as lawmakers push to rename the venue for the Republican president.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, Trump teased the announcement, saying, "GREAT Nominees for the TRUMP/KENNEDY CENTER, whoops, I mean, KENNEDY CENTER, AWARDS."
Trump also teased a physical overhaul of the center in Washington, D.C., saying he planned to restore it to the "absolutely top level of luxury, glamour, and entertainment." No details were immediately available.
Since returning to power in January, Trump has sought to put his stamp on American culture and institutions to align them closer with his political and personal preferences. His administration has ordered a review of some Smithsonian museums and exhibitions to "remove divisive or partisan narratives." At the White House, Trump has added gold leaf to the Oval Office, paved over the Rose Garden, and embarked on plans for a $200-million ballroom.
Trump did not attend events at the Kennedy Center during his first term but has taken a keen interest in it during his second, vowing to overhaul an institution he and his "Make America Great Again" supporters view as too liberal.
He pushed out its chairman in February and took on the role himself, fired its longtime president, and installed his former ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, as interim president.
In a post on X, the Kennedy Center said its building - which opened in September 1971 - would undergo renovations thanks to Trump's advocacy aimed at restoring its "prestige and grandeur."
The arts facility also hinted at the 2025 winners: "A country music icon, an Englishman, a New York City Rock band, a dance Queen and a multi-billion dollar Actor walk into the Kennedy Center Opera House…."
Republicans recently voted as part of a sweeping tax cut and spending bill to earmark $257 million for the building's renovation, conditional on the opera house being named after first lady Melania Trump.
Republican Representative Bob Onder in July introduced a bill that would rename the modernist building the Donald J. Trump Center for the Performing Arts. Trump last visited the Kennedy Center in June for a performance of "Les Miserables," where he and his wife were met with a loud mix of boos and cheers.
Ticket and subscription sales have fallen since Trump's conservative takeover of the venue, and some shows, including the hit "Hamilton," have canceled their engagements.

Which European leaders are set to meet Trump alongside Zelenskyy in Washington?
European leaders will travel with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Washington on Monday for talks with US President Donald Trump, Reuters reported. The meeting comes two days after Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where proposals for a possible peace deal were discussed. Those attending the White House talks include German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Finnish President Alexander Stubb will also take part. The leaders aim to support Ukraine as Trump presses for an agreement with Russia. According to the German government, the talks will focus on 'security guarantees, territorial issues, and continued support for Ukraine in its defence against Russian aggression. This includes maintaining pressure on sanctions.' European powers are also pushing for a trilateral meeting between Trump, Putin and Zelenskyy to ensure Ukraine has a direct role in shaping its future. Trump and Putin spoke in Alaska about Russia giving up smaller areas of occupied land in exchange for keeping larger parts of eastern Ukraine, as reported by Reuters. A source familiar with the talks said Trump later told Zelenskyy by phone that Putin had offered to 'freeze most front lines if Kyiv ceded all of Donetsk.' The source added that Zelenskyy rejected the proposal. Russia currently controls about one-fifth of Ukraine, including most of Donetsk province. After his Alaska meeting with Putin, Trump said: 'Ukraine should make a deal to end the war with Russia because Russia is a very big power, and they're not.' He also suggested that talks could proceed without a ceasefire, shifting from his earlier stance that fighting should stop first. European leaders want to avoid a repeat of Zelenskyy's last visit to the White House in February, when Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly urged him to strike a quick settlement. Ahead of Monday's meeting, Merz, Macron and Starmer hosted a virtual session of the 'coalition of the willing', a grouping of more than 30 countries backing Kyiv. Bill to decriminalise minor offences to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday
The Jan Vishwas (Amendment) Bill, 2025, to decriminalise certain minor offences to promote ease of living and business, will be introduced by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in the Lok Sabha on Monday (August 17, 2025). According to the list of business posted on the Lok Sabha website, the Minister will introduce the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025, "to amend certain enactments for decriminalising and rationalising offences to further enhance trust-based governance for ease of living and doing business". Over 350 provisions are proposed to be amended through the Bill. The move will help create a more conducive business and a citizen-centric environment in the country, according to an official. The legislation is part of the government's effort to improve the country's business climate. Earlier, in 2023, the Jan Vishwas (Amendment to Provisions) Act was enacted, which decriminalised 183 provisions in 42 Central Acts administered by 19 Ministries and Departments. Through the Act, the government removed imprisonment and/or fines in some provisions. Imprisonment was removed and fine was retained in a few rules, while in some cases imprisonment and fine were converted to a penalty. "There are laws in our country, astonishing as it may sound, that provide for imprisonment over trivial matters, and no one ever paid attention to them," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his Independence Day speech on August 15. "I have taken it upon myself to ensure that such unnecessary laws, which place Indian citizens behind bars, are abolished. We had introduced a Bill in Parliament earlier; we have brought it again this time," he noted. The government earlier abolished more than 40,000 compliances deemed unnecessary. It has also scrapped over 1,500 obsolete laws. "We have gone to Parliament to amend dozens of laws to simplify them, always placing the interests of the public first," Mr. Modi said.
