MILWAUKEE – Giannis Antetokounmpo is favoured to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks amid increasing speculation that the two-time NBA MVP is open to being traded this off-season.
The Bucks are the odds-on favorite at -140 by DraftKings to be the team Antetokounmpo is playing for in his first minute of the 2025-26 regular season. That is well ahead of the San Antonio Spurs (+380) and Houston Rockets (+450).
The Rockets crashed out of the play-offs after posting the second-best record in the Western Conference, but have a young and talented roster poised to compete for several years.
That roster could use an experienced star in the mold of Antetokounmpo to make a deeper play-off run next season alongside the likes of Amen Thompson, Antetokounmpo, Tari Eason, and Dillon Brooks.
The Spurs also make for an intriguing destination to pair with young star Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox, who was acquired from Sacramento last season. San Antonio are still armed with a slew of draft picks to help facilitate a deal.
The next shortest odds belong to the Toronto Raptors, who have moved to +1000 with a report by the Toronto Star that there is 'mutual interest' should Antetokounmpo be traded. Separately, ESPN reported that the Raptors are 'looking for a big fish' in the off-season trade market.
It was originally reported in April that Antetokounmpo would be open to playing elsewhere in 2025-26.
According to the Star's report on June 1, the Raptors are deep enough at the wing position to combine with first-round picks to make a run at Antetokounmpo, who has spent his first 12 seasons with Milwaukee.
Antetokounmpo, 30, averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds and 6.5 assists in 2024-25 before Milwaukee were handed their third straight first-round playoff exit.
With highly paid All-Star guard Damian Lillard facing a lengthy rehabilitation after tearing his left Achilles tendon in the play-offs on April 27, the Bucks are not well-positioned to contend for a championship next season – which speaks to the off-season decisions that the Bucks and Antetokounmpo face.
He is under contract through the 2026-27 season and has a US$62.8 million (S$80.9 million) player option for 2027-28. He carries cap hits of US$54.1 million in 2025-26 and US$58.5 million in 2026-27.
Meanwhile in other NBA news, the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers are set to clash in October.
There was a lot of criticism circling the Mavericks after they traded franchise star Luka Doncic to the Lakers in February. Expect another round of opinions about the big swap during the pre-season when the Mavericks and Lakers meet at Las Vegas on Oct 15.
The Lakers announced four pre-season games on June 2 in which they are designated as the home team, and the attention-getter is the matchup against Dallas.
The Mavericks landed Anthony Davis in the controversial deal, but Dallas fans were irate over the loss of Doncic.
The Lakers won both meetings between the teams after the trade.
Doncic had a triple-double (19 points, 15 rebounds, 12 assists) as Los Angeles beat visiting Dallas 107-99 on Feb 25. He then poured in 45 points in his first visit to Dallas as a visiting player on April 9, helping the Lakers prevail 112-97.
Davis missed the Feb 25 game before producing 13 points and 11 rebounds on April 9.
The Mavericks won the NBA draft lottery despite being big longshots, so they could have Cooper Flagg, the projected No. 1 overall pick, in action when they get to Las Vegas. The Lakers, of course, will have a roster led by veteran LeBron James.
The Lakers also announced pre-season games against the Phoenix Suns on Oct 3 in Palm Desert, California, and home contests against the Golden State Warriors on Oct 12 and the Sacramento Kings on Oct 17. REUTERS

India police arrest two after deadly cricket stampede: Reports
People walk past scattered shoes left behind following a stampede outside a cricket stadium in Bengaluru, India, on June 4. PHOTO: REUTERS BENGALURU - Indian police arrested two people including a senior executive at IPL-winning cricket team Royal Challengers Bengaluru after 11 fans were crushed to death during victory celebrations, local media reported on June 6 . Hundreds of thousands had packed the streets in the southern tech city Bengaluru on June 4 to welcome home their hero Virat Kohli and his RCB team-mates after they beat Punjab Kings in a thrilling final of the Indian Premier League. But the euphoria of the vast crowds ended in disaster when 11 mainly young fans died in a stampede near the city's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the players were parading the trophy. Media outlet India Today said June 6 that Nikhil Sosale, RCB's head of marketing, was arrested at the Bengaluru airport. The Indian Express newspaper reported Mr Sosale was arrested, along with an executive from the event management company DNA. The reported arrests come hours after Karnataka state's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that 'legal action has been taken against the representatives of RCB', as well as the event organisers, and the state's cricket association. Mr Siddaramaiah said a first information report, which marks the start of a police investigation, had been 'registered against them'. Local media reported that the charges include culpable homicide, not amounting to murder, among others. Mr Siddaramaiah, who only uses one name, said top police officers in Bengaluru, including the city's police commissioner, have been suspended. 'These officers appear to be irresponsible and negligent, and it has been decided to suspend them,' Mr Siddaramaiah said. The dead were mostly young fans, aged between 14 and 29, who were among a sea of people who had poured onto the streets to catch a glimpse of their heroes. RCB offered financial aid of US$11,655 (S$14,975) to each family of those killed, calling the deaths 'unfortunate'. Indian media have widely reported the team earned US$2.3 million in prize money alone for taking the title on June 4 . Kohli, who top-scored in the final, said he was 'at a loss for words' after celebrations of a dream IPL crown turned to tragedy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the accident 'absolutely heartrending'. Mr Siddaramaiah said earlier that the stadium had a capacity of 'only 35,000 people, but 200,000-300,000 people came'. Adam Silver: NBA ‘should be exploring' expansion
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver speaks to the media prior to Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Getty Images via AFP OKLAHOMA CITY – Commissioner Adam Silver has offered hope to cities looking to land an NBA franchise, saying on June 5 that the league 'should be exploring' expansion. He addressed the media in his annual state-of-the-league talk ahead of Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and the host Oklahoma City Thunder. Regarding the addition of teams, Silver said: 'I don't think it's automatic, because it depends on your perspective on the future of the league. 'As I've said before, expansion in a way is selling equity in the league. If you believe in the league, you don't necessarily want to add partners. 'On the other hand, we recognise there are underserved markets in the United States and elsewhere – I think markets that deserve to have NBA teams. Probably even if we were to expand, more than we can serve.' In terms of potential expansion locations, he added: 'There's been no lack of interest. I essentially have said to people from several different cities, 'We're just not engaging in that process right now'. 'I want to be fair to everyone. So I don't want to have meetings with some and not others. So if we were to say yes, we're now going to move into a more formal exploratory phase... We would take those meetings, and in addition likely we would engage with outside advisers who would look at markets, look at economic opportunities and media opportunities, etc.' The NBA has not expanded since the then-Charlotte Bobcats joined ahead of the 2004-05 season. Las Vegas and Seattle are widely viewed as the top targets for future teams, with Mexico City potentially in the mix, too. Silver also addressed several other topics. 1. While a spate of regular-season injuries prompted speculation about the NBA cutting down the 82-game regular season, he dismissed the notion of a lighter schedule. 'Money's part of it, there's no question about it,' Silver said. 'We're a business. Having said that, I don't really see the benefit to reducing the number of games. People used to say you should reduce the number of games because it will lead to a reduction in a number of injuries. We have absolutely no data to suggest that. 'Injuries are considered down this play-offs from what has been historically our second-lowest in 10 years. So we have pretty healthy teams coming into the Finals now.' 2. After the success of the NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off, the NBA is likely to switch to nationality-based format for the 2026 All-Star Game in Inglewood, California. 'I don't think a straight-up USA versus World makes sense,' Silver said. 'That's not what they did in the NHL, either. There probably will be some different teams we form.' Noting that the 2026 game will be played amid the Winter Olympics in Italy, he said: 'I think we can play off that nationalism. I think there's a real opportunity to create enhanced interest and enhanced competition from the players.' 3. Silver lauded the fact that the NBA is about to crown its seventh different champion in seven years. 'We set out to create a system that allowed for more competition around the league, the goal being to have 30 teams all in a position, if well-managed, to be competing for championships,' he said. 'And that's what we're seeing here. The goal isn't necessarily to have a different champion every year. It's to have, as we said before, parity of opportunity.'
