Regent of Johor to attend Singapore's 60th National Day celebration
Singapore's Foreign Ministry (MFA) said that Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will also attend, representing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Other regional leaders scheduled to be present include the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
'Singapore is honoured by the presence of dignitaries from our closest neighbours at our milestone celebration.
'Their attendance underscores our shared geographic and historical ties and reflects the enduring strength of our friendships,' the MFA said in a statement on Friday.
NDP 2025, themed Majulah Singapura, will feature the largest number of contingents during the parade and ceremony segment, in celebration of Singapore's diamond jubilee of independence. — Bernama

A social media account posted a photo of a three-storey shop building in Pontian, Johor, where the national flag was hung upside down on the second floor next to the state flag, which was correctly displayed. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan has called for calm after another business premises, this time in his constituency in Johor, was seen hanging the Jalur Gemilang upside down. Ahmad, who is also the deputy works minister, said the upside down flag displayed at a dental clinic had been corrected. 'I urge everyone to remain calm. This matter is being addressed, and the authorities are already taking the necessary action,' he said in a Facebook post. He said the business owner and a staff member had given their statements to the police, after several police reports were lodged. He also explained that the staff member had hung the flag upside down by mistake. Ahmad said he has spoken to the president and secretary of the Pontian Municipal Council and the district officer in charge, and that he will be meeting with the district deputy police chief tomorrow to discuss the matter. 'Let us remember that this is not an issue of race. It is a matter of awareness, attentiveness, and patriotism. All communities and all parties must be careful when dealing with sensitive matters, while the authorities must ensure that the law is upheld at all times,' he said. Earlier today, Harian Metro reported that a 33-second video, which had gone viral, had shown the national flag being flown upside down on the second floor of a three-storey shop building, next to the Johor flag, which was correctly displayed. Several members of the public and policemen were also seen in front of the building. Pontian deputy police chief Abd Hamid Abdul Rahaman confirmed in a statement that an investigation had been launched. Last week, the Attorney-General's Chambers reminded the public not to take matters into their own hands in instances of protocol breaches regarding the Jalur Gemilang. The AGC's statement was issued after more than 200 people led by Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh gathered near a hardware shop in Kepala Batas, Penang, after its owner was investigated for hanging the Jalur Gemilang upside down outside his premises. Several other cases involving the incorrect display of the Jalur Gemilang also made the headlines, including one involving a school in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, and another where Terengganu Umno Youth had posted on its social media account a graphic of the flag with a mistake.

Malaysia waits for Trump's official word on semiconductor tariffs
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Malaysia is waiting for official confirmation from United States (US) President Donald Trump after reports suggested he may impose import tariffs of up to 300 per cent on semiconductors entering the US. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. said no formal notification has been received. "So far, there has been no decision from the US. We will wait. Once there is an official statement from President Trump himself, we will respond accordingly," he said. On Aug 15, Trump announced that semiconductor import duties could be introduced within two weeks, possibly ranging from 200 to 300 per cent. The US imports most of its semiconductors from Taiwan, Malaysia, Israel, South Korea and Ireland. Last year, Malaysia exported RM119.86 billion worth of electrical and electronic products to the US, about 20 per cent of total exports in the sector. Semiconductor exports to the US alone were RM60.6 billion, also 20 per cent of Malaysia's total. The industry employs more than 72,000 skilled workers and is supported by over 7,200 local suppliers, mostly small and medium enterprises. An estimated 65 per cent of Malaysia's semiconductor exports to the US come from American firms operating locally. Earlier, Tengku Zafrul launched the MBW Innexus Industrial City Project and witnessed a memorandum of understanding signing at the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre-Johor in Forest City. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi attended. Tengku Zafrul said the state with Malaysia's highest investment performance for the second quarter of 2025 will be announced this Friday. "The state with the strongest investment performance in the second quarter, and which is set to lead the country in attracting investments, will be named then. Johor is among the states with a complete investment and business ecosystem to support investor growth. Its prospects remain strong," he said. In June, Johor recorded the country's highest approved investments in the first quarter of 2025 at RM30.1 billion.

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor has enough water for industry usage to last beyond 2050, says Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi (pic). The Johor Mentri Besar has hit out against certain people attempting to scare off investors by alleging that the state could not sufficiently supply water and electricity supply to industries. 'Such claims are slanderous and malicious towards the state government's efforts to attract international investments, particularly under the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone. 'Our initiatives are carried out comprehensively with the Federal Government to provide the best facilities for investors,' he said in his opening speech at the launch of the MBW Innexus Industrial City development on Wednesday (Aug 20). He said the state has also set up a special taskforce involving three state executive councillors - state investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han, housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor and works, transportation, infrastructure and communications committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh. 'When companies want to build data centres in Johor, we will assess them first. If there is not enough electricity and water supply, their applications will not be approved. 'But as we are all informed, our resources in Johor are sufficient because of our ongoing efforts,' he said. Among the efforts that he highlighted was working with Indah Water Konsortium to use alternative water sources for data centres. He added that Johor has a long-term plan with the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry to ensure sufficient water supply until at least 2050. 'Johor is very serious about bringing in investments and we will ensure that investors who choose the state feel secure as we have adequate water and electricity supply. 'To those trying to stir up issues, I hope they stop because what we want is not only to develop Johor's economy but also to create an impact for the country,' he said.
