I went to the Soap Awards and here's everything you DIDN'T see on TV – from axed speeches to onstage blunders

The Sun06-06-2025
THE British Soap Awards returned to screens last night after having been mysteriously axed for 2024.
The ceremony, screened on ITV, was dominated by EastEnders who picked up a total of eight awards, including the prestigious Best British Soap.

Jane McDonald was back in the hosting seat having taken over from axed TV star Phillip Schofield in 2023 and the night appeared to go off without a hitch.
However, The Sun can exclusively reveal a number of moments which were pulled from ITV's final broadcast - including a series of faux pas' from former soap stars as well as heavily edited speeches from Jaime Winstone and Patsy Palmer.
One moment that failed to make it to air involved former soap star Jan Pearson, who played Karen Hollins in now axed BBC soap Doctors.
She made a triumphant comeback to the Soap Awards stage following the programme's cancellation in order to present the gong for Best On-Screen Partnership.
Jan was stood alongside co-star Chris Walker to hand out the gong to EastEnders duo Rudolph Walker and Angela Wynter.
However, she was forced to read out the nominations a total of THREE times.
And whilst one audience mole suggested on X the re-records took place as a result of the loud cheers for Corrie pair Vicky Myers and Alison King, The Sun can reveal an entirely different reason was behind the triple taping.
Actress Jan suffered an on-stage coughing fit which saw her struggle to read out the names of the nominees.
She gave it three goes but was affected by her tickly throat each time.
The second and third attempts were both filmed after the gong was handed out with the audience already aware of exactly who had won.
Elsewhere, whilst hostess Jane was on top form for most of the evening, there were a handful of occasions where she was forced to do a series of re-takes despite the ceremony supposedly filming as live.
One audience member told The Sun: 'The warm-up guy made it clear from the start that they were recording the ceremony as live and so everyone had to be on their best behaviour.
'It also put a lot of pressure on Jane as she was expected to rattle through her hosting duties without a hitch but with so many links to record, she was bound to mess up on a few of them.'
Just moments after the show kicked off, Jane was forced to re-record one of her links about hunky Coronation Street star Jacob Roberts.
The actor, who plays lothario copper PC Kit Green, caught Jane's eye and she was quick to make a joke about his good looks.
However, she tripped up over her own words and was left rad-faced as she admitted she had become too flustered thinking about Jacob.
The audience erupted into laughter as Jane attempted to brush off her hilarious mishap and instead re-told her joke just seconds into the event.
The moment left Jacob looking down at the ground after unexpectedly becoming the centre of attention.
Someone else who suffered an embarrassing blunder was awards presenter Denise Welch.
She was also forced into re-filming her entire segment after a blunder with her very own CHEE award.
As part of a skit, Denise was handed a joke prize by Shirlie Kemp to mark her achievement of having played roles in all four major soaps.
The trophy was made out of items connected to each of the four soaps but Denise held her prize back to front meaning the audience and cameras could not see what she was referring too.
Just before handing out the award for Best Newcomer, Denise was halted by bosses and instructed to re-do the entire segment again and have the trophy facing the crowd.
One onlooker told The Sun: 'Denise was referring to the trophy being connected to all four soaps but no one could see anything.
'It led to a lot of blank and unimpressed expressions on the soap stars faces when the cameras cut to a close-up hoping to get a hilarious reaction from them.
'It fell a bit flat but Denise was able to pick the mood back up when she was told of her error.'
During the ITV broadcast, clever camera trickery saw the award facing the correct way as Denise gave her speech.
Moreover, TWO star speeches were drastically cut down.
Actress Jaime Winstone delivered a whopping five-minute speech that had to be edited down to less than a minute after she accepted the gong for the first award of the night for Best Single Episode.
The star did not mince her words as she spoke about the honour of being part of the special episodes set in 1985 but less than half of it made it into the final edit.
Patsy Palmer's X-rated speech about her vagina also saw some editing after she made a slew of vulgar jokes after accepting the award for Best Comedy Performance.

Lorraine Kelly 'leaving' ITV amid broadcaster's brutal job cuts

Lorraine Kelly 'leaving' ITV amid broadcaster's brutal job cuts Lorraine Kelly is reportedly set to leave ITV when her contract ends next year Lorraine Kelly is reportedly preparing to quit ITV when her current deal concludes next year, according to insiders. ‌ The 65-year-old broadcaster was said to be furious earlier this year after ITV revealed that her programme would be slashed to just 30 weeks in 2026, down from the standard 52-week run. ‌ From January onwards, her show will also face a cut in duration, broadcasting from 9.30am to 10am only - 30 minutes shorter than her current hour-long show. ‌ It's now being reported that the Scottish television personality has decided to sever ties with the broadcaster when her current contract expires next year. Wales Online has contacted representatives of Lorraine and ITV for comment. A consultation process is presently underway to determine who will face the impact of ITV's stringent budget reductions, reports the Daily Star. She's got a year left on her contract, which she will honour, but beyond that there are no plans for her to stay. She will be leaving. "Of course, she will be fine, she has loads of money. But some of the people who work for her have done so for many years and have put up with her demands for a long, long time. Yet they will struggle to ever get another job in the television industry." Although her role appears secure, Lorraine is thought to be ready to step away from presenting duties after 15 years leading her programme. ‌ This restructuring might also affect Lorraine's well-liked replacement hosts Christine Lampard and Ranvir Singh, whose opportunities to present the show could be significantly diminished. Lorraine has been hosting her show for 15 years (Image: ITV) The news comes after Lorraine, who hails from Glasgow, celebrated four decades in television with a special edition of her morning programme, which broadcasts after Good Morning Britain on ITV1 and ITVX. The veteran broadcaster recently signed a new, short-term contract that will see him continue to front the show for at least another six months. Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV1 at 9am

Loose Women's Janet Street Porter says 'I'm sad' as she addresses major show setback

Loose Women will shift to a seasonal schedule of 30 weeks per year and will no longer have a studio audience, as part of ITV's major shake-up for 2026 Loose Women panellist Janet Street Porter has spoken out about the upcoming changes to the ITV show, set to take effect in 2026. As part of a major shake-up to ITV's scheduling, there will be fewer episodes aired of the popular lunchtime programme, and live studio audiences will also be scrapped. ‌ With the show being scaled back to just 30 weeks a year, reports also suggest that some of the 26-strong panel could also be cut. Addressing the changes, the 78-year-old said she won't be affected by it. ‌ "They won't really affect me because I work when I want to work," she shared with Woman Magazine. ‌ "I can see they need to save money but from my point of view, I'm sad they've cut the episodes because Loose Women as a brand is doing extremely well for ITV. "Very well indeed. It's increased its audience share and it's loved by the audience." Janet is one of the long-term panellists, who has been a part of the show since 2011. ‌ In a previous interview, she seemed adamant that the older stars will not be axed from the programme. "There are no plans to get rid of the older women, despite of what some people have said!," she told Bella Magazine. ‌ "In fact, the reverse is true. ITV actually put out a statement saying we are the valued members of the show because the audience totally relate to us." Janet went on to say that the show has become "trusted by a lot of women", due to the difficult topics the panellists discuss, such as female health and domestic violence. "I think the show has managed to connect to women who wouldn't otherwise have a voice," she added. ‌ "And it's delivered with a lot of laughs because we don't take ourselves too seriously." While Janet may not seem worried by the news, her co-star Nadia Sawalha has expressed a very different view. ‌ In an emotional video on her YouTube Channel, the presenter said she found the "out of the blue" cuts 'absolutely brutal'. Addressing her uncertain future on the show due to being self-employed, she added: "I could be let go tomorrow, [or] I could be let go in five years, you don't know because we're not employees." As well as Loose Women, Lorraine Kelly's self-titled show will also only operate on a 30-week seasonal basis, and will be cut from one hour to 30 minutes on air. ‌ In a statement, Kevin Lygo, the managing director of ITV's Media and Entertainment Division, acknowledged that the broadcaster is going through a "transition". He said: "I recognise that our plans will have an impact on staff off screen in our Daytime production teams. "We will work with ITV Studios and ITN as they manage these changes to produce the shows differently from next year, and support them through this transition." Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV and ITVX.
