Ranchi: Carrying placards and chanting slogans for their dignity and rights, household helps marched from the district school to the Zakir Hussain Park on Monday to mark International Domestic Workers' Day.
The Supreme Court had on January 29 directed the Union govt to create a legal framework for the rights of domestic workers.
The workers, mostly women, demanded a comprehensive law, ensuring fair wages, paid leave, social security and weekly rest. "What we are asking for is not charity, but justice. We clean homes and care for children and the elderly, but our work is still invisible. Even today, there is no official data about us.
No recognition, no protection," said Reena Kispotta, a protester.
The International Domestic Workers' Day is observed on June 16 to mark the ILO Domestic Workers' Convention 189 adopted in 2011. The convention advocates for dignity and fair working conditions for domestic workers. Though India supported the convention, it is yet to ratify it.
"Despite India's commitment at the global level, there has been no real action on the ground.

The govt must now act, especially after the SC order," said Anshu, a labour rights advocate.
Speakers at the rally called for the urgent formation of an expert committee to draft the law. They demanded that the panel must include labour and human rights experts, especially women and child welfare representatives.
Jyoti Tirkey, a domestic worker from Namkum, said, "We don't get weekly offs. We are called anytime and there is no fixed pay. We just want basic rights."
The workers vowed to continue their fight until a national law guarantees them what every other worker is entitled to — dignity, rest and fair compensation.

Irregular waste collection irks locals in Guwahati

1 2 3 Guwahati: Several areas across the city are facing inconvenience due to irregular door-to-door garbage collection by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The situation has become particularly bad in areas like Silpukhuri and Geetanagar, where people are struggling with unreliable waste collection. In Silpukhuri, locals expressed frustration over the irregular waste collection and unreliable service. Many claim workers prioritise large apartment buildings while neglecting individual houses. "The workers only visit big apartment complexes and ignore homes like ours. We pay the same taxes but don't get the same service. It's unfair," said Nayan Das, a resident of Karnachal Road in Silpukhuri. Responding to the complaints, GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania assured residents that corrective measures would be taken. "We take these issues seriously and have already warned NGOs handling waste collection to ensure equal and regular service for all households," he said. According to Sarania, due to recent Eid holidays and ongoing document verification for the Assam govt's movement against illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, there is a shortage of workers, as many of them travelled to their native villages, but soon everything will run smoothly as earlier. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Irish homeowners eligible for solar 'bonus' if they live in these eircodes Activ8 Learn More Undo GMC's public grievance officer Puthem Rajesh Singh said, "Our door-to-door garbage collection is done regularly, and it has become more efficient that earlier. In case of any inconvenience, residents can reach out to our helpline number (8811007000)," Singh said. In Geetanagar, residents raised concerns about garbage trucks skipping houses on sloped roads. "Collection vehicles only stop at houses near the main road, ignoring homes on inclined paths," said Dishanta Adhikari, a local resident. Adhikari added that multiple complaints had been submitted to the councillor, but no resolution had been provided. Ward 52 councillor Gokul Goswami acknowledged the issue and proposed a long-term solution. "GMC garbage trucks struggle to access uphill residences. To address this, we plan to build concrete dumping pits in hilly areas, where waste will be collected regularly," he said. "I have already discussed the construction of dumping pits with many local residents, and a few had agreed with the proposal," Goswami added.

Nashik civic body to conduct structural audits of all bridges after Pune collapse

Nashik: Following a recent fatal bridge collapse in Pune district, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has expanded its plans to conduct structural audits of all 48 bridges within the city limits. This decision comes as a critical measure to ensure public safety, especially with the Simhastha Kumbh Mela scheduled to take place in Nashik between 2026 and 2028. Initially, the civic body had planned to audit 12 bridges in preparation for the Kumbh Mela. However, the tragic incident involving a bridge on the Indrayani river in Pune district, which claimed four lives, prompted a more comprehensive approach. Nashik boasts of 48 bridges on Godavari river and its three tributaries — Nasardi, Waldevi, and Waghadi. Seven of these bridges were constructed for the last Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2015. An NMC official confirmed that these widespread structural audits will be carried out to prevent any unfortunate incidents, particularly during the anticipated high footfall of the upcoming Kumbh Mela. The civic body intends to strengthen any structures identified as needing work based on the findings of these audit reports. "Earlier, the structural audits of some bridges were carried out by the smart city corporation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Average Price of a 6-Hour Gutter Guards Upgrade Read More Undo However, the structural audit of all the bridges is now to be carried out in view of the upcoming Kumbh Mela," the official said. Two years ago, the NMC conducted a structural audit of the century-old Ahilyabai Holkar bridge and some other bridges. These bridges were found structurally fit during the audits. Ahilyabai Holkar bridge was built in 1895 on Godavari river. Gadge Maharaj and Ram Setu bridges are over six decades old. The latter was built in 1955, while the former was built in 1956. Both bridges connect the old Panchavati and old Raviwar Peth areas of the city. There is a huge movement of pedestrians through these bridges on a daily basis. The structural audits of both bridges were done by the smart city corporation around two to three years ago. The NMC is also constructing nine new bridges on the Godavari river and its three tributaries in view of the upcoming Kumbh Mela. The tender process for this has already been started by the civic administration. Around 5 crore people are expected to visit Nashik during Kumbh Mela.
